Stinner '55 Chairman, The Morning Call $400,000 Pledged To Mountaintop Please See Page 5 > Photography by PAM LOTT VOLUNTEER DAY Lehigh honored the more than 1,300 alumni, friends and parents who have volunteered their time and services during the past year at Volunteer Day last Saturday, highlighted by the dedication of the Muriel and Philip Berman Sculpture Gardens. Trustees Approve New Stadium Project :f^^- -.-V.J. 'v % %>' V r.4 . The Executive Committee of Lehigh University's Board of Trustees has authorized the construction of a new stadium at the University's Murray H. Goodman Campus. Targeted for opening for the 1988 football season, the facility will be built in a natural bowl adjacent to Stabler Athletic and Convention Center, home of Lehigh's wrestling and men's and women's basketball teams; Philip Rauch Field House, Lehigh's indoor track and field facility; and the Robert A. Kaufman Fields, home of the women's softball, lacrosse and field hockey teams. Marsha A. Duncan, university vice president for student affairs said "More than simply a superb center for Lehigh University athletic and recreational activities, we feel the stadium will be an outstanding resource of which the entire Lehigh Valley can be proud. Construction of the stadium is due to begin next month. Its design will be modular, allowing for phased construction. The number of fixed seats in the first phase will be from 11,400 to 16,000, depending on detailed planning and fund raising. Plans also call for a press box, a complex of "sky,boxes," and a field house to accommodate home and visiting teams. In Perspective Lehigh acquisition of the Mountaintop Campus means more j \ than just facts and figures. Please See Pages 4 and 5 > Calendar September and October offer a potpourri of enrichment on and off the Lehigh campus. Highlights include the Art Contre/Against Apartheid exhibit now in progress in the Wilson Gallery; James Taylor in concert at Stabler Arena September 27, and a host of films being shown on campus as part of serveral film series. Please See Pages 6 and 7 > ATLSS Project They are pouring thousands of yards of concrete in a building on the top of South Mountain. Called the ATLSS project, the facility wiM be able to apply stresses almost unimaginable to bridges and other structures: When completed, ATLSS will be one of the most important testing facilities in the United States. Please See Page 5 > Fulbriaht Scholars Lehigh professors Dr. Joseph Dowling and Dr. Peter Beidler have both left the United States to study abroad this year as part of the Fulbright program.
