Dulles thanks Walter for sending greetings on the occasion of his birthday. He attempted to contact him by phone to express his "deep appreciation of your generous words." In his long diplomatic career Dulles served in the First World War, worked in Army Intelligence, and served as a representative to the United Nations, as a United States Senator, and as the Secretary of State under President Dwight D. Eisenhower from 1953 to 1959. Congressman Walter served in World War II and as a Representative from Pennsylvania in the seventy-third and fifteen succeeding Congresses, serving from 1933 until his death May 31, 1963. Walter also acted as chairman of the Committee on Un-American Activities.
