The collection contains three personal diaries and a poem. The first volume of the personal diary contains a retrospective account of his life. It is also important because of the information he gives about early Bethlehem.

Johann Philipp Meurer (1708-1760), born in Ingweiler, Alsace, was trained as a shoemaker and joined the Moravians in Herrnhaag in 1740. He was sent to Pennsylvania and arrived in Bethlehem with the First Sea Congregation in 1742. He married Christina Krafft (1718-1756) in 1744. He was ordained on December 9, 1742, and served Moravian congregations in Tulpehocken, Donegal, Lebanon, Swatara, and York. He moved to Bethlehem in 1756 and continued to preach until his sudden death in Bethlehem.

Administrative Information

Meurer's personal papers were given to the Archives at an unknown date. They were part of the Congregational Library until they were integrated into the collection of journey accounts by John Fliegel around 1960. They were removed from that collection and inventoried in August of 2010 by Paul Peucker.
