The collection contains letters, written to Nathanael Seidel. They are more of a personal nature than his official correspondence, to be found with the records of the Bethlehem Congregation, the Provincial Helpers Conference, etc.

Nathanael Seidel was born on Oct. 2, 1718, in Lauban, Silesia, and joined the Moravians when he was twenty-one years old. He was sent to Pennsylvania in 1741 and was present at the organization of the Bethlehem congregation on June 25, 1742. He held various offices, made trips among the American Indians and to the settlers, and oversaw the work in various congregations. He became a presbyter in 1749 (bishop in 1758). He traveled back to Europe in 1750/51, 1757-61, and 1769, to the West Indies (1753, again in 1758/59), and was a member of the founding party of Bethabara in Wachovia, North Carolina. He married Anna Johanna Pietsch in Herrnhut on Oct. 30, 1760. He died in Bethlehem on May 17, 1782.
