The Rau collection consists primarily of notebooks and other papers. The notebooks are composed by Rau, and some contain indexes or catalogues for various magazines and newspapers, where as some contain descriptions, dates, names and happenings. The majority of the material in the collection is historical documentation of Bethlehem and the surrounding area. The other papers in the collection are primarily descriptions of different businesses, memoirs, and other miscellaneous information.

Robert Rau was born November 4th, 1844. Rau moved with his family in 1849 to Bethlehem where he remained for the rest of his life. Robert Rau was a pharmacist by profession working for the family business Simon Rau & Co, yet his real passion was in historical records and local affairs in Bethlehem and the surrounding areas. Robert Rau was a member of the Moravian Historical Society from 1883 until his death in 1906. Rau was also elected Provincial Archivist for the Moravian Church in 1901, and helped create one of the most complete English-Moravian hymn books from 1888 to 1900. Bro. Rau was active in the Moravian Church: he was part of the choir since 1861, and the trombone choir since 1866. Robert Rau died on July 30, 1906 after suffering a heart attack at work. He was preceded by his wife who passed in 1904. They had one son, Albert G. Rau.
