This collection includes correspondence, diary entries, biographical information and other materials spanning from 1802-1923, belonging to several generations of people within the Rondthaler family.


The earliest materials in the collection belong to Emmanuel Rondthaler, Sr. (1764-1847). Born in Prussia in 1764, Emmanuel Rondthaler, Sr. spent time in Moravian congregations at Neusalz an der Oder (in Poland) and Sarepta, Russia. He was called as a minister to York, Pa., in 1806, and spent the rest of his life working in America. He died on June 6th, 1847.

His son, Edward Rondthaler, Sr., born in 1817, also served the Moravian Church, working in various congregations throughout Pennsylvania. He also taught for a time at Nazareth Hall, a prominent boarding school at the time. He died on March 5th, 1855.

Another son, Ambrose Rondthaler, was born on June 8th, 1813. A teacher and minister by trade, Ambrose spent his entire career in Bethlehem. He celebrated his 50th wedding anniversary with his wife, Mathilda Caroline Busse, on April 20th, 1887. He died in Bethlehem on September 7th, 1890.

Edward Ronthaler, Jr., son of Edward Rondthaler and grandson of Emmanuel Rondthaler, was born in 1842 and was a Moravian minister in Brooklyn, New York; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; and Salem, North Carolina. He, too taught for a time at Nazareth Hall. He died in 1931.
