by bob morgran approximately two years ago if you had walked along the first floor hallway in coppee hall your ears would have picked up unfa miliar sounds resembling the con versation heard around a bar on houseparty weekend but now if you were to retrace your steps down this same corri dor nothing would seem extraor dinary for the noon-hour russian class held in coppee is now a known thing seems that two years ago a few students and prof hans karl schuchard of the german depart ment became interested in learn ing how to speak the russian lan guage consequently these lan guage-hungry students consented to give up a good portion of their j lunch hour and with stomachs growling set out to master the • russian tongue now the class has grown in size while adding to its roster a new member of the faculty prof frank velesz of the economics depart ment students now participating in the class are russel hetrick 53 bob hardy 53 bill thompson 53 rolfe weisbrod 54 gilbert mos kowitz 56 jim horan 54 and profs velesz and schuchard the method used in learning this language is a bit different from the type used upstairs in the lan guage department students use small russian readers an idiom book and linguiphone records supplied by prof schuchard see russian pagre 3 vaughn monroe of racing with the moon fame will bring his or chestra into grace hall to provide music for the houseparty dance friday night oct 24 also supply ing music will be bob harry and i his orchestra tickets for the dance which cost 5 went on sale yesterday they can be obtained from social chairmen in all living groups town men can buy tickets from mrs moravec on the top floor of drown hall monroe who to his millions of fans is synonymous with his fa mous theme song has also record ed vocals of such hits as balleri na let it snow and cool wa ter many aren't aware of the fact that he is also an accomplished hand on the trumpet and trom bone apparently he has deserted the trumpet but he still stands in with the trombone section of his band when the occasion arises music almost did not become his career for two years in 1932 and 1933 he studied engineering at carnegie tech while there he also took courses at the carnegie school of music and later he entered the new england conservatory of mu sic at boston however he still could not decide whether he should become an engineer or a concert singer financial necessity finally made up his mind for him an ac complished trumpeter he took a job in a dance band for the next four years he played the trumpet and did occasional vocals in 1937 he became a bandleader in 1940 he signed an rca victor recording contract and hit the big time his recording of if you see maggie sent him to the top and he has stayed there ever since harry's band which has played such spots as atlantic city's steel pier has gained a reputation for playing strictly danceable music a veteran of world war 11 harry is noted as a skilled clarinetist and a distinctive writer and arranger he played wrote and arranged music for many of the top bands in the nation before he decided to form a band of his own chest fills purses spill lehigh university took in quite a bit of money at the charity ball the other night but sigma phi was out 30 due to looting the purses of three of the brother's dates one girl had 20 taken from her purse while the remaining 10 was pilfered from other girls ex act time of the theft is not known but it is believed it took place some time during or after the ball this latest theft is one of many suffered by this and other fraterni ties on campus this year hard at work learning russian via linguiphone records and readers are left to right prof frank velesz bob hardy 53 prof hans schuchard gilebtr moskowitz 56 rolfe weisbrod 54 and im horan 54 54 chen e adopts odd study habit displeased with study conditions in his section robert j adler 54 has switched to the night shift 808 found that he couldn't study during usual hours because of noise in his dravo section and freshmen who continuously came into his room for help so he de cided to go to sleep instead his new routine enables him in theory to study from 3 to 7 a.m in complete quietude immediately after he finishes classes at 4 p.m he eats dinner and goes to sleep he awakes at 2 a.m eats breakfast at a local restaurant and starts to study at 3 under his new schedule he eats lunch in mid-morning the chem.e still has not decid ed if his system is effective it was still experimental he said it look ed as though one complication would develop he would have to make special allowances for sec tion meetings although there have been other instances of students making all night stands to study for exams this is one of the first cases of mak ing these stands a daily routine smiley will represent the administration james gill will also address the group gill is a former lehigh odk and a former editor of the brown and white president wil liam westerman of odk will make the closing remarks and the din ner will end with the benediction by bishop sterrett chaplain bean intends to leave for his new position monday oct 20 an open invitation has been ex tended to all members of the stu dent body and members of the faculty to attend the all-university dinner in honor of chaplain george bean the dinner will be held in the ballroom of hotel beth lehem at 6:30 p.m oct 16 chaplain bean recently re signed his position as lehigh chap lain to become rector of st mark's episcopal church in richmond va to the affair can be obtain ed by mailing 4 to the george bean dinner fund care of drown hall publicity director mark kauf mann 53 announced the program for the dinner sponsored by xi circle of omicron delta kappa na tional senior honorary society the invocation will be delivered by the right rev frank w ster rett bishop of the protestant epis copal diocese of bethlehem fol they learn to speak russian at lunchtime deviating from past procedure omicron delta kappa national senior honor fraternity has adopt ed a new manner of study for campus problems applicants see notices in the past applicants were asked to submit a project dealing with a current problem on campus with a suggested solution al though the project was not the ba sis for initiation into the society it was felt that the idea stimulated thought on current problems since too often the applicants merely presented the problem and offered no solutions a new angle is being tried this year odk pledges will be given prob lems this year rather than being asked to submit studies and their job will be to come up with the solution ideas under consideration are the relationship between stu dents faculty and administration with the prospect of improving them dormitory problems with re lation to their effect on freshmen spirit and improved leadership and attracting better men to le high faculty pledges will also work on the projects dorm movie rests on idc sanction the fate of a dormitory theater project rests in the hands of idc members meeting tuesday night to vote on a proposal making idc sponsor of a lamberton hall movie originally named dravo theater by bruce steinhoff 54 the undertaking was halted by order of the dean's office last week only hours before its opening perform ance in the dravo bamboo room whether or not an admission fee should be charged if films are un der idc supervision will be a ma jor point of discussion in the plan developed by steinhoff after con ferring daily last week with the deans the scheme also includes use of lamberton hall for two showings saturday night and one sarly sunday evening of first-run twentieth century fox produc tions the shows would be primari ly for men of the five dormitory groups such films as all about eve on
