wholehearted support of president whitaker's recent pro posal for a new health service building was voiced at a joint meeting of campus organization leaders and prominent alumni on april 28 at a dinner at the beth lehem club sponsored by the alumni association in cooperation with arcadia's alumni contact committee 15 undergraduates pre sented lehigh's needs to 18 alum ni and university officials tom maccabe 53 directed the after-dinner discussion new ar cadia president john arnesen 53 summarized immediate student needs as better parking facilities a snack bar improved hospital fa cilities and a program for pre freshman days gene howie 52 emphasized the medical service needs calling for 24-hour service a larger staff with transportation facilities and greater space to charles a seidle associate dean of students will resign this post to become director ox admis sions effec.ive july 1 the announcement of his ap pointment as director was made wednesday by president whita ker at a faculty meeting seidle will succeed clarence b campbell who has resigned to become vice president in charge of personnel of the edward camp bell company vineland n.j i regret very sincerely losing my personal contact with the stu dents commented seidle i have enjoyed the close associa tion with the students but i now have a bigger job to do campbell who for two years has been ac.ing director of ad missions in the absence of byron hayes who is currently serving as a commander with the united states navy has been on the le high staff since 1947 seidle has no immediate plans for changes in the admis sions office and complimented his predecessor by saying that campbell has done a fine job particularly in the field of sec ondary schools dean seidle came to lehigh in 1938 as assistant director of ad missions under dr smiley vice president of the university he filled this post until 1941 when he left for service in the army before returning to lehigh sei dle attended columbia universi ty where he took his master's and doctor's degrees in education in january of 1948 he returned as as sociate dean of students after receiving his degree from temple university serving as su pervising principal of the spring field township high school campbell took his master's de gree at lehigh in 1947 he served with the marines in world war 11 as neighbors watch an ambulance attendant comforts phil maloney bus 54 minutes after the youth lost control of the auto he was driving with a friend bart kelly and crashed into the brick steps and porch of the home of james robertson 1133 n new st kelly of jenkintown pa and maloney were on their way to lafayette college to meet their houseparty dates when the accident occurred both youths were immediately placed on the critical list at st early wednesday morning removed most of the class officer campaign posters from campus trees michael arra 53 chairman of the arcadia elections committee told the group wednesday that no candi date's posters were spared he estimated that 350 worth of posters was lost information about ihe vandals should be given to any arcadia member but preferably to arra with class elections scheduled for monday those few candidates whose posters had not yet been attached to trees will have an advantage said arra since the other men will have neither the lime nor the money to get new posters he estimated that the average candidate spends 10 on posters it was speculated thai those responsible for the removal of the posters might have been students ob jecting to the posters on aesthetic grounds in a related action alvin lewis 54 asked for and won arcadia support for a request to the university for i aditional campus police protec tion at night and especially dur ing social events only one po liceman is on duty at night at present the budding democratic dub petition for university recognition was deined by the student activi ties committee lewis reported because the group's plans went too vague the committee suggested that the club present a petition again next semester when their plans are more definite and perhaps a republican club will be formed also he said two engineering honoraries chi epsilon civil engineering and alpha pi mu industrial engi neering were recognized by the committee according to lewis rho eta local social fraterni ty is petitioning delta chi a national fraternity for member ship with the approval of the committee lewis said responding to a question asked see arcadia page 8 smash up . . . the question of banning freshman cars was thrashed out by arcadia wednes day and finally referred back to committee for discussion with the deans of stu dents and pres whitaker before the group takes a stand in the matter but the big debate was held wednesday and the decision to refer the motion back to committee was strongly opposed george hopkins 54 chairman of the parking committee moved that arcadia rec ommend to the university that freshman cars be banned except in hardship cases he stated that his group had found 267 dormitory parking spaces 268 cars belonging to dor mitory residents on campus throughout the year and 42 cars on campus part of the year by re moving the 110 freshman cars the problem of parking space would be solved he argued but no car ban could be put into effect next semester because the trustees of the university who would have to consider such a recommendation will not meet again until october it was stated only next year 1953 would it be possible to apply the rule in the course of the protracted discussion two representatives of the interdormitory council which earlier this semester were granted permission to address the body they were samuel johnson 53 and fabyan saxe jr 54 the idc men strongly sup ported hopkin's motion
