gown deposit to the class treasury after the first year pay ments will be made directly to the insurance company seniors who wish to add their names to the supporters of the memorial gift plan may do so by filling out the applications sent to them or others obtainable at the arcadia office and mailing the ap plications to the office final examinations will begin on wednesday may 28 instead of thursday may 29 as original ly scheduled and end friday june 6 instead of the following monday as the result of action taken by the faculty at its april meeting this scheduling change was made to avoid conflict with the annual alumni day program which takes place this year on saturday june 7 it was felt that the two events could not take place simultaneously since there would not be enough room and the noise of alumni day would not permit the examinations to be carried out decorously as a result classes will end tuesday one day earlier than scheduled and one day of finals will be eliminated for the first time in many years there will not be a one day break between the last day of classes and the first day of exams another plan considered by the faculty to avoid the conflict call ed for nine hours of examinations to be scheduled on two non consecutive days however this proposal was voted down by the faculty 29 compete in williams semi-finals more thefts on campus a portable three speed web ster record player belonging to professor schempf of the music department was stolen from grace hall between music festival re hearsals a week ago thursday this is the second time that the player has been missing last year it was taken but not maliciously according to schempf it reap peared a few days afterward it is worth about forty dollars but it means more than that to me because members of the band and glee club gave it to me a couple of years ago schempf declared he said that the machine was used for dances and record edit ing and that he hoped it would return as promptly as it did last time also it is reported that 218 was stolen from the lockers of le high baseball and lacrosse play ers last week in taylor gym adlai stevenson governor of illinois was nominated lor presi dent friday by delegates from 42 pennsylvania colleges and uni versities to a mock national political convention sdonsored by the intercollegiate conference on government and held in the state capitol buildings harrisburg lehigh's 16-man delegation bound by the results of a recent student poll to support general eisenhower held firmly to its in structions through four hectic bal lots in the face of a snowballing stevenson movement which over came an early eisenhower lead on the third ballot and squeezed out exactly the number of votes needed for a majority — 246 — on the fourth ballot on that last ballot eisenhower had 234 votes and sen robert taft had one vote the stevenson victory was gen erally considered an upset as in view of the usual republican strength at icg meetings and the formidable political appeal of general eisenhower in the east in announcing lehigh's vote on the fourth ballot leo rooney 52 leader of the delegation said le high refuses to be stampeded six teen votes for eisenhower the 16th annual meeting of the intercollegiate conference on government opened thursday evening with addresses by two members of the national house of representatives richard w boi ling a democrat from missouri and john v beamer a republi can from indiana each presented his interpretation of the program of his party nominations for chairman and clerk of the conference were also made thursday evening richard kradjel 53 nominated miss fern laiken of beaver college for the clerkship in the elections the following morning she was named to the position donald hess of franklin and marshall won the chairmanship james kressler 53 was elected see convention page 8 ten dollars in prize money is in the offing for those students who in the opinion of prof fran cis quirk of the fine arts depart ment submit the best posters pushing the class of 1952's memo rial gift plan a first prize of five dollars a second of three and two dollars for third place will be awarded thursday afternoon competing posters must be submitted to prof quirk before thursday morning the poster contest represents the start of the senior class final effort to obtain 100 per cent par ticipation in the class gift plan at the present time more than one third of the class of 52 have pledged support of the idea the memorial gift plan first instituted at lehigh by the class of 29 consists of pledges by the graduates to take out 300 endow ment policies naming the univer sity as beneficiary first payment on the policies three explore steam tunnels huck finn's adventures had nothing on the escapades of three unidentified students for mystery adventure etc early sunday morning spurred on by something more invigorating than the mere love of adventure the explorers found their way into the newly-exca vated steam tunnels they traips ed all under campus — from i drown hall to chem building i very educational they chimed ship shaping crow's nest . . . lehigh's rotc units will hold armed forces day observances monday may 12 all cadets who are members of the army or air i force rotc will participate in this review which will probably be held on the upper field according to maj ralph new man senior project officer in charge of coordinating all phases of armed forces day observances in bethlehem advanced students will receive their awards and ad vancements at this event maj newman also extended an invita tion to parents of students partici pating in this observance to at tend this event which is open to the public the armed forces day observ ances will be held may 13 through 15 no observances will be held on the 16 and 17 since the bach festival is to be held on this date the new observances differ from previous ones in that there will be no parade through the city instead a committee for armed forces day with mayor schaffer acting as honorary chair man will give talks on armed forces observances to the stu dents of the bethlehem linquency and leadership were discussed by the 29 contestants in the semi-finals of the williams prize extempore speech contest last night nineteen members of the speech 30 class joined six win ners of last monday's preliminar ies in the upper-class contest for 75 first prize while four fresh men were competing for the chance to win 50 next monday night in the finals members of the speech 30 classes held a contest of their own during class periods to determine who should advance to the semi finals because instructor dwight l freshley was the only judge three members of each section were permitted to enter the semi finals winners of the preliminary round of the upperclass division held in christmas-saucon 109 last monday night were i paul hand werk jr 52 nelson basil 52 alan w koppes
