go thiough the expensive and con fining ordeal of having their own can now enjoy practical classes in child psychology the senior class cabinet at its last meeting voted into effect a senior class baby sitting program designed to bring greater student faculty harmony on this campus while the cabinet does not ex pect the program to be too exten sive this semester we hope to lay the groundwork for a permanent program ed dann class presi music festival opens 2 day run at 8 tonight changes which became ef fective this week in lehigh's li brary system include extended borrowing periods reduced card signing and discontinued notifi cation of holders of overdue books increased reference service will be made possible by this new sys tem head librarian james d mack indicated time previously used in preparing overdue no tices and in performing other chores which the new system has eliminated will be used to better reference facilities all non-reserved books bor rowed by undergraduates and townspeople after april 16 will fall due on may 15 books bor rowed on or before the 16th of the month will fall due the last day of the month best sellers are in cluded in this category holders of overdue non-re see library page 10 acting to avert what was described as a threatened curtailed educational program the lehigh university board of trustees voted an increase of 100 per year in undergraduate tuition and moderate hikes in rental rates of some dormitory rooms effective sept 1 the announcement was made by elmer w glick university treasurer follow ing the annual april meeting of the trustees in new york city wednesday tuition in the college of engineering will be 800 per year in the college of arts and science and the college of business administration the new tuition rate will be 725 per year tuition will continue to be a comprehensive charge there will be no special assessments such as athletic health labora tory or course fees no additional charges will be made for extra hours in announcing the tuition in crease glick said the decision was a reluctant one it was reach ed only after a thorough study of the 1952-53 budget and a very careful analysis of retrenchments which would be necessary if the university were to continue its present tuition rate this action results not only from inflationary influences with which we are all acquainted but also from the financial problems of manitaining an adequate facul ty — an increasingly competitive problem as the 1952-53 budget was analyzed it became obvious that the students welfare would be jeopardized by retrenchment at that point the trustees were un willing to compromise he also announced that the trustees have appropriated a spe cial fund to be used together with available loan funds by the com mittee on scholarships and loans in alleviating as much of the dis tress as possible in hardship cases scholarship tuition grants will be increased proportionately to correspond to the new tuition charaes the expected capacity crowd will see a streamlined version of the broadway musical briga doon as the feature of the festi val the first part of the program will provide musical mood and fantasy combined with special dance arrangements featuring such numbers as delta suite stocking song brother will brother john and black mag ic featuring a space stage ris ing to a level of 13 feet the 1952 lehigh music festival will be held at 8 tonight and tomorrow night in grace hall designed by bruce w rein hold 53 the space stage is built on the bleachers rising in tiers to to the 13-foot level where a cen ter screen is flanked by a large apron stage for the dancers deadline is extended for williams entrees class elections scheduled for may 12 and 13 class elections will be held monday and tuesday may 12 and 13 elections for the classes of 53 54 and 55 will be held for the offices of president vice president secretary and treasur er although a vice-president will be determined no petitions will be accepted for this position since the candidate who places second in the presidential race will be the vice president petitions are available in the arcadia office for those students the deadline date for petitions is who wish to become candidaets monday april 28 petitions must be returned to the arcadia office attends conclave dr edward d amstutz pro fessor of organic chemistry at le high attended the federated so cieties meeting in new york this week high school hopefuls hero cyanide junior class honor leadership society will conduct a senior visitation day this after noon climaxed by the music fes tival tonight the campus will be invaded by approximately 125 high school and prep school seniors who are prospects for entrance into the university in the fall the pre-frosh who are ex pected to arrive between 2 and 5 this afternoon will be conducted on guided tours around the cam pus and will meet campus lead ers in all activities some time to day in drown hall the seniors selected for their interest in extra-curricular activl ties and academics will have dinner at various fraternity see cyanide page 9 the stocking song is the prize-winning song of acting di rector of admissions clarence b campbell who was winner of this year's band song contest another new composition to be presented is tom waring's tom waring waltz written by the arranger for the pennsylvanians expressly for the music festival according to prof albert a rights one of the festival's facul ty advisers the back screen was first used in the 1949 festival it was brought from hollywood and has a sensitive plastic surface similar to the screen used in tele vision for the projection of scen ic effects the front scren meas ures 75 feet by 30 feet and is used to embrace the three panelled projectors from the front for fan tasy effects three dimensional and profile section trees are used to set off the area where the glee club con cert band and orchestra are
