residents of taylor hall turned out en masse last wednesday to participate in the dormiioty's semi-annual field day held in the building's court five sections of the dormitory competed in events ranging from potato sack races to the standard tug-o-war section a coached by president sam johnson succeeded in collecting a total of 37 points in the event to win the coveted inscribed miniature beer keg sec tions c e b and d followed the winners booby prize for the event went to section d which received the award of the purple shaft award ed for low point total of six the athletic events were fol lowed by original skits won by section a a singing contest also won by section a and a beauty contest won by section c sup peir and beer were served the event was finished with a movie all classes will be cancelled on saturday may 26 this faculty action taken monday afternoon is to facilitate the administration of the selective service college qualification tests to be given here on that date meanwhile may 15 was set as the deadline for applications to take the test by maj gen lewis b hershey director of the selec tive service system all postcards postmarked latar than midnight may 15 will not be accepted he said gen hershey explained that the deadline was set to give the educational testing service administrators of the exam time to process the ap plications to assign each ap plicant to a testing center and to assign to each appli cant the date for his test still other sources again urged all eligible students to take the test once again emphasizing the fact that the student has every hing to gain and nothing to lose by taking the test elmer p brock vice-president of the na tional student association urged all students to apply immediately brock said he felt many stu dents were under the impression the tests have been cancelled or have been made meaningless by a congressional amendment ito the draft bill stating that local draft boards aae not bound by the approximately 70 to 75 fresh men will be among 720 students enrolled in summer school and camp this year this is the num ber of beginning students who director of admissions clarence b campbell and registrar james h wagner expect to take ad vantage of the summer session of the expected 720 stu dents 550 will be summer school students while 200 will be attending summer en gineering camps thirty will attend both the camp and summer school the enrollment represents an see summer page 2 gipson receives fulbright award dr lawrence h gipson re search professor of history at le high has received a fulbright award for study abroad the awalrd is one of approximately 340 grants for lecturing and re search made during the 1951-1952 academic year funds used in the fulbright program are foreign currencies realized through surplus property sales abroad lecturers and re search scholars are recommended for the grants by the conference board of associated research councils which has been desig
