for candidates who were not elected thus 96.7 per cent of the voters elected some one of their preferences the sys tem of proportional representa tion now employed in the elec tions makes possible this high percentage of representation the absence of any mis marked ballots speaks well for the intelligence of lehigh men according to george howatt instructor in govern ment and adviser to arcadia on election matters the newly-elected council see arcadia page 8 planned around the walden string quartet the music depart ment's two-day contemporary music festival is scheduled for thursday and friday evenings march 8 and 9 under the sponsor ship of the cleaver memorial fund the programs will be pre sented at 8 p.m in broughal high school auditorium admission will be free three of the eight composers whose music will be featured are expected to be present for the festival all seven living compos ers are now residents of the uni radio workshop begins varied program series army choose ir dept to conduct research ted states and all are well recog nized in the field of contempor ary music the walden string quartet of the university of illinois has an international reputa tion particularly for its skill in presenting contemporary music not only has this group appeared in all the im portant musical centers of this country but was given signal recognition when pick ed to tour germany and aus tria under the auspices of the united stales government since adopting its name 15 years ago from thoreau's classic the quartet has played 75 broad casts over nbc and columbia networks and has made numerous recordings for columbia and rca victor their latest recording be ing piano quartet which will be presented on the opening night program on friday a chamber orchestra composed of professional musici ans from throughout the lehigh valley will present compositions see walden page 8 ghem lab damaged by fire chandler chemistry laboratory was seriously threatened by fire escaping from an incinerator in the basement recently according to the custodian the incinerator was being used to burn refuse apparently the flames escaped through an ill-fitting fire door and ignited a pile of paper nearby city firemen from victory and central stations were called and quickly quelled the blaze with the aid of chemicals and a labor atory fire hose blackened walls and the loss of some chemical equipment were the only dam ages ben johnson followed on thurs day april 19 by a fantasy about a cat which made good in poli tics entitled the pussycat and the expert plumber written by arthur miller the final drama of the season is scheduled for thursday may 7 and will be a production of oliver goldsmith's famous classic she stoops to conquer other radio plans for the sem ester include programs featuring interviews with students from other lands broadcasts of the le high cliff clefs and a monday night concert hour featuring great classical music the u.s army has chosen the international relations depart ment here as one of iwo groups in pennsylvania to conduct research on yugoslavia the assignment is to provide information for the army's future use members of the research group here include prof w l godshall international re lations department head capt thomas barman and lt vernon schantze and three undergraduates wil liam puckett jr arts 53 john goodale arts 52 and richard sherman arts 53 the team will compile informa tion concerning the industrial potential geography culture and other pertinent information which the army may use each member is assigned a topic to report on periodically at round table dis cussions moravian to send 24 blood donors as pledge cards s]owly trickle in for the campus-wide blood do nating program moravian col lege for men has volunteered to send 24 potential donors here on march 16 to help fill our quota volunteering as a group 24 stu dents of the omicron gamma omega fraternity signed up giv ing that house a 100 per cent new continuity system iarocci first elected 50 plus cast ballots fifty-six per cent of the student body — 1450 ballots were cast — elected fifteen men to arcadia according to the tally compiled last evening in drown hall dormitory candidates captured the first three spots on the roster in order of election and the three veteran arcadians were re-elect ed by comfortable margins the new arcadia is composed of ten fraternity men and five dor left to right — standing rabbi tzvi porath vincent de cunte louis sand john van ness john bigatel mr frank pa!evicz seated arthur dwyer mark kaufmann chaplain george bean charles ball walden spring group to appear at festival leading educators and theolo gians representing hebrew pro testant and roman catholic faiths will appear as guest speakers at lehigh university's first confer ence on religion scheduled from march 4-7 the conference has been estab lished to promote interfaith uni ty by encouraging studenls to better understand their own faiths after several years of pre paration by students and faculty who felt the need for a campus wide program which would focus the attention of the entire univer sity on the meaning of faith opening with a hillel-so cieiy-sponsored fraternity ser vice at the brith sholom com munity center at 8 tonight the conference will continue daily until march 7 conclud ing with a mass at the holy infancy church the conference whose theme will be the meaning of life in an age of crisis is not an at tempt to give students a broad sermon on the religions of others instead it hopes to create an in terfaith unity by suggesting that the individual attend the meet ings of his own religion thereby understanding his own faith and creating a basis for mutual un derstanding and unity with others two youths burglarize smith home a lehigh faculty member's home was broken into thursday night feb 22 by two young men about 18 years of age an investi gation by detective ralph e flemming revealed that the two men entered the house of prof robert m smith through an un locked window the thieves stole a billfold and purse containing approximately 12 belonging to mrs smith it was found on the ground floor while the vandals were at tempting to ransack the rooms on the second floor prof smith was awakened by the noise made by opening the door to his bedroom when he called out the thieves headed for
