an unrestricted endowment fund exceeding 45,000 was es tablished by university trustees with a bequest from the estate of the late mrs alida r richards wife of the university's sixth pres ident who died april 17 1941 trustees named the grant the charles russ and alida r rich ards fund in memory of the late president and his wife who died in 1947 dr richards served as pres ident from 1922 until aug 1935 when ill health made him retire during his tenure endowment was increased by over two million dollars while student enrollment and faculty increased nearly 50 per cent and the annual bud get practically doubled and balanced every year other achievements under richards were the establishment of the lehigh institute of re search creation of the office of dean of the university establish ment of student health service and revision of the engineering curricula also achieved was procurement of lehigh field on elizabeth aye and construction of the library addition j dr richards was graduated from purdue in 1890 with a me chanical engineering degree he did graduate work at cornell and tha university of nebraska top bands here for hp prompt order of class ring will save 3 costing 800,000 the new phy sical education plant represents the second major project of the 2,010,449 progress fund two lounges and the idc president's suite in dravo house the first progress fund project were also dedicated at the open house after opening his dedica tion speech by announcing the lehigh-bucknell halftime score grace thanked the alumni and friends who had contributed to the fund and expressed his views on the value of physical training coupled with religious and scholastic development also included in the dedica tion ceremony were a welcome by paul j franz assistant to the president a description of the new facilities by gen percy l sadler director of athletics and an invocation and benediction by rev george m bean university chaplain after the ceremony a swim ming and diving exhibition was presented including a 150 yd in appearing for the first time in this area jean destine and his widely-known group of haitian dancers and drummers will fea ture the concerts-lectures series presentation on friday oct 13 at 8 p.m in grace hall students will be admitted upon presentation of their identifica tion card while guests of students and faculty members will be charged 75 cents each the program will include night club favorites as well as voodoo dances of haiti jean leon destine who has performed in haiti mexico and throughout the united states is a favorite among critics for the vivid interpre tation of his native culture his skill is achieved through authentic movement stem ming from a fusion of the african and french cultural traditions of his country his dances depict the sadness of the haitian slaves in their struggle for freedom their gaiety of carnival time and their mys tery of voodoo destines drummer alphonse cimber will also appear
