christian council invests nine men nine members were invested into the christian council in packer memorial church sept 26 they are ralph archer william hunter james kress ler robert schuman donald mccarty james keller pat prest henry rentshler and jesse monsell from 5 to 7 p.m they held a business-dinner meeting in lam berton hall where plans were dis cussed for the student christian movement conference to be held at dowington pa oct 5-7 campus chest sets goal of 3 per man in drive tuesday from 7:30 p.m to 9:30 p.m and on saturdays from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m tuesday evening has been set aside for the faculty their wives and children 16 years and older the men will be permitted to use the faculty locker room women may use the visiting team locker room for the children in the 8 to 15-year group inclusive the pool will be available saturday morn ing before allowing their chil dren to swim in the pool par ents are requested by the ath letic department to send the names of those who are ex pected to participate and their ages to william chris tian swimming coach at the athletic department identification cards will be is sued for children soon all par ticipants must bring their own towels and suits excerpts from gounod's opera faust will be presented by the kipnis opera group at 8 tonight in grace hall as the initial offer ing of the student concerts-lec tures series committee star of the production will be the inter nationally acclaimed bass-bari tone alexander kipnis star of the metropolitan opera company concert stage radio and televi sion students will be admitted upon presentation of their bursar's receipt student guests and members of the faculty and their wives may secure specially-priced tick ets for 1.00 at the box of fice this evening tickets for the public will be 1.50 and 2.50 the visit to the lehigh campus was made possible by david hocker of the w colston leigh management in new york city and will inaugurate a transcon tinental tour for the troupe the production will be given in ev ening dress with piano accompa niment with kipnis serving as narrator and taking the role of mephistopheles others in the cast and their roles will be delores hecht as marguerita john howard as faust tyler long as valentine norma malerba as siebel and rena sherman as marthe donald comrie will be the pianist kipnis first received criti cal acclaim in the united states when he was presented by the metropolitan opera company as gurnemanz in parsifal he has been heard there since in leading roles in the ring operas faust tristan and isolde and boris godounoff he has appeared with the de troit seattle kansas city pitts burgh new orleans and phila delphia symphony orchestras his recordings are drawn from opera lieder and folk song the music critic of the philadelphia inquirer called kipnis one of the greatest singing artists of our day arcadian iii arcadia member anthony j larocci ae f's3 is confined to his home in scarsdale n.y suffer ing from a cyst at the base of his spine larocci may have to undergo surgery it is not known when he will return to campus eclipse viewing delayed 3 years because of inclement weather an activity of the e w brown astronomical society scheduled for monday evening has been postponed for three years that's when the student astronomers will get another chance to view and photograph an eclipse of the moon tuesday evening however the amateur astronomers had better luck a few of their open house guests got a look at the planet jupiter while being shown through the newly-rtenovated sayre ob servatory charles e scovil president of the society reported that approx imately 30 students mostly fresh men attended the open house more than 20 men expressed a de sire to join and a good working group is expected for this year activities of the society in the future will include instruction in astronomy for the members reno vation of observatory displays and possibly some amateur tele scope making a bid to the charity ball see page three the cash allocation in percent ages for the different charities that the campus chest supports was decided upon last june the scale of percentages follows world student spc loopc 51 to view job outlook senior students who will be candidates for jobs in 1951 will have the opportunity to learn about the employment situation at placement meetings next tues day and wednesday at 4 p.m in packard auditorium everett a teal director of placement frank v pale vicz assistant director of placement and e robins morgan placement advisor will discuss tecrniques in get ting jobs and placement office procedure using a new pledge system the campus chest committee will open its annual charity drive oct 8 with the hope of at least a 3 donation from each man on cam pus while cash contributions are favored the chest com mittee felt that a pledge sys tem of donations would cause the students a minimum of fi nancial embarrassment as a result of this policy when the solicitors circulate through the living groups they will ac cept pledges in lieu of cash ac cordingly three dates have been set aside by the committee for the redemption of pledges they are nov 15 dec 15 and jan 15 when the pledge is made the contributor will specify to the so licitor on which date he wishes to redeem his pledge a pledge or contribution of s3 will entitle the donor to arcadia to upperclassmen this week were permanently expelled from the doimitory system the action was taken early in the week by the dean's office as a result of an unau thorized party in drinker 111-b on the night of sept 19 deadline for the eight men's removal to quarters outside the residence halls system was noon wednesday it was extended however to enable them to find accommodations text of the dean's letter to each offender : because of your bad citi zenship in the residence halls and disobedience of univer sity regulations you are de nied the privilege of further residence in any university
