maintained its su premacy before it even allowed its goal line to be crossed effective mass-meeting held wednesday since cornell game all of lafay ette's efforts directed toward conte s t with lehigh a decided ' come-back in spirit was staged at the hurriedly called college meeting last wednesday afternoon practically every man in college with the exception of those who had classes was present the meeting was conducted by m b tate jr president of the senior class who made several re marks concerning the spirit shown towards the team by the student body he stated that the attitude of the college since the pittsburgh game has been one of indifference due largely to a false rumor of dis sention on the team and that it must be changed at once if lehigh the number of spectators at the lafayette game this year promises to be the largest that has ever as sembled in taylor stadium not only is almost every seat in the stand sold or rather has been sold for a week but additional stands have been built along the upper field and every seat in this stand has already been sold at the gym there is not a seat in the stand to be had and there are but a few left in the cheering section last wednesday " bosie ' ' bart george beck kannaly and park fraim began at seven thirty to send out tickets that had ben ordered by mail they worked until four-thirty the following this saturday marks the close of one of the most successful foot ball seasons which a brown and white team has ever had through out a year marked by the universal revival of athletics in the colleges arid universities of the country after the depression caused by the war the lehigh team has main tained an enviable record and has well upheld her honor early in september tom keady called for candidates and there was an abundant supply afforded imme diately enough material was on hand for six teams three of which were of almost equal strength into an eleven which maintained statement by prof reiter statement by coach keady lehigh ivill enter tomorrow's game fully prepared to play her best to win coach keady the team which can combine headwork in an attack coupled with am efficient passing game will win defensively i think hehigh the stronger bosey reiter herrington lehigh quarterback capt mac donald of lehigh r.g tomorrow's game our aim now he said is to beat lafayette and we must have no other or conflict ing aim that any lack of spirit which might have been evident at the be ginning of the meeting disappear ed was shown by the songs and yells following the talk a cheer was given for every man on the team and the band w r as present to help arouse enthusiasm heading a parade to the field after the meet ing special permission was ob tained from coach keady to enter the field for a short while during which time the stadium echoed with cheers continued on fifth page the annual clash in football this saturday between lafayette and lehigh promises to be the most ex citing and closest contest in the his tory of these two instituions each team has been defeated twice by larger institutions lafa yette by princeton by the close score of 9-7 and pennsylvania 23j-0 lehigh by pittsburgh 14-0 and perm state 20-7 the make up of the lafayette team has been settled for some time whereas cciach keady and his assistants even at the present writing are in doubt as to the best men for a num ber of positions this fact has be<en unavoidable due to a number of men who seem to be on a par with one another lehigh as a team w;i-th the substitutes has passed through three hard gruelling games in succession with an easy game with muhlenberg last saturday this ought to give a certain superi ority in development when put to the test with a fighting opponent her material fortunately is in good shape at present physically trained lehigh will face lafayette in the annual game on taylor field for the first time in a number of years on an equal footing both teams in this their most important game of the year will enter the contest favorites with their respective supporters for the first time in a number of years lafayette feels confident of winning ; lehigh is equally confi dent and will enter this the last and most important game on the schedule prepared to defeat her rivals lehigh will enter this game fully prepared to play her best game to win no member of the team or coaching staff is overconfident and all fully realize the great strength and spirit of the lafayette teams in all lafayette's games with le high tom keady football coach memorial fund campaign ends saturday morning before they had finished disposing of the 5737 ticketa a few tickets are yet to be had at young's and metzger's drugstores on the south skle and the quality shop on the north side and peters drug store in^allentown as men tioned there are no seats outside of the cheering section at the gym continued on third page the seats oil the east side of the stand around the ; ball field have been sold for 1.50 as they are not quite as choice as those on either side of the fiel-ft for the benfefit of those who are not familiar ith taylor field it might be welljto say that the lafa yette side is fn the north side of the stand or ffiat side of the stand that is opposite to the press box coming fromr'easton by trolley it is best to change at broad and new streets and take a car over the new street bridge to fourth street on the south side from this point it is easy to roach the campus by those coming by train the campus can be reached by walking up broadhead avenue which is the first street at the east end of the lehigh valley station no cars will be permitted to en ter the field out may be parked in the lafayette football warriors have shown a very favorable record so far this season but as far as the eastonians are concerned the re sults of tomorrow's game will de cide the success or failure of the past season lafayette started her season with a large number of the old men back on the squad this number was increased by the in coming class making a very large source of material from which coach sutherland was able to buiki up an excellent team the first game of the season was with muhlenberg and although the fsyi.ol tgyvnp yv.ti v j-.vi o oil 1 tllf lafayette team had little trouble in beating the muhlenberg lads 13 to 0 the second game was a little too hard for so early in the season and although the eastonians out played their opponents they lost to the princeton eleven by a score of 9 to 6 after the princeton game the next big game for lafayette was with pennsylvania and all her energy was turned in that direc tion the second home game was with haverford and the lafayette warriors had no trouble in win ning by an overwhelming score of 41 to 0 then came the pennsyl vania game and the eastonians set out for philadelphia to win the red and blue team proved to be too much for them however and although they put up a wonderful fight they were defeated by a score of 23 to 0 hummel lafayette's left end received a badly sprained ankle in the early moments of the game and it is still doubtful whether or not he will be able to take part in tomorrow's battle this game was followed by an other hard game for the maroon and white men the game with cornell this time however coach sutherland's men were successful and they managed to defeat the fast cornell warriors 21 to 2 this with the exception of the game to morrow was the last hard game on the schedule the games with dickinson and trinity which fol lowed proved to be easy for the eastonians and they won both games the score of the former be ing 41 to 0 and that of the latter 35 to 0 since the cornell game all of coach sutherland's efforts have been centered on the titular contest of the season with lehigh tomor row and every possible preparation has been made to have the lafa yette team in the best of shape for the coming battle with the brown and white team the game tomorrow will be the fifty-fourth annual battle between the two institutions of the fifty three games already played the continued on fourth page continued on third page the football game between le high and lafayette here on satur day will have special interest as this day will mark the culmination of the campaign among lehigh university alumi for a half million dollar memorial hall in honor of the service of lehigh men in the world war more than 1800 lehigh alumni or 30 per cent of the total living sons of the university wore their country's uniform more its supremacy against five strong teams before it even allowed its goal line to be crossed the season was opened on sep tember 27 on taylor field by a game with the villanova eleven this was a fairly easy game and tom keady made good use of it to test out his material one after another he sent the various teams into action and used in all about forty-five men all had equal suc cess and the game ended with le high leading by 47 points against villanova s 0 then followed the ursinus game on october 4th here the brown and white met a worthier oppon ent and fought a hard battle against a well-coached eleven both the first and second teams were used in this contest and each show ed up strongly in face of its op ponents the final score was 13 to 0 favor of lehigh on october 11th the eleven met one of the supposedly strongest teams in the country rutgers came to bethlehem flushed with their victory of last year and con fident of their prowess in their backfield were garrett an all american tackle of 1917 and french the star fullback the brown and white was eager to wipe out the disgrace of last year's defeat and fought bitterly to stem the advance of the jerseymen despite the fact that the rutgers line outweighed the lehigh line time and again the lehigh eleven stopped the smash of the new brunswick offense in the first quarter the brown and white scored their first touchdown and in the fourth period followed it up with two more the final score was lehigh 19 ; rutgers 0 again the team had maintained its goal line inviolate albright cancelled the game on october 18th but the n y aggies sent a challenge which was immedi ately accepted lehigh easily won this game but suffered a lose in the back-field henzelman who had continued on fourth page record of sutherland's men favorable to date vol xxvil no
