hard to imagine yet the motive behind this work of art must have come from some academic source it could hardly be a spontaneous expression on the part of the stonecutter somewhere lies the solution to this situation perhaps the truth will come out when a group of alumni from the class of 89 gather for their reunion next month and sing where the lehigh's rocky rapids rush from out the west mid a grove of spreading chestnuts lies our class's jest late last night a group stealthily left the office of the brown and white the campus was dark sil ently they moved from inscription to inscription compactly they huddled around each granite block a match flared up eagerly they peered at each piece of writing they were comma hunters look ing for stonecutter's grave errors the truth was being sought as a brown and white investigating committee set out to prove that an error had been made in cutting the inscription 89 in the new steps leading to the flagpole those steps erected by that class for its 50th reunion proponents of the orthodox style claimed that the comma preceeding the 89 was reversed others wanted to be shown thus the pilgrimage to com pare the new steps with other campus monuments research proved that the latest addition had a comma style distinctly its own all other stone work bethlehem pa friday may 19 1939 final exam corrections price — five cents leadership contraction mark curving down to the left this disproved the theory that the pecu larity was merely stonecutter's jargon or that tra dition insisted on the twisted variety of contraction mark typographical errors in stone cutting are hard to imagine yet the motive behind this work of art must have come from some academic source it could hardly be a spontaneous expression on the part of the stonecutter somewhere lies the solution to this situation perhaps the truth will come out when a group of alumni from the class of 89 gather for their reunion next month and sing where the lehigh's rocky rapids rush from out the west mid a grove of spreading chestnuts lies our class's jest late last night a group stealthily left the office of the brown and white the campus was dark sil ently they moved from inscription to inscription compactly they huddled around each granite block a match flared up eagerly they peered at each piece of writing they were comma hunters look ing for stonecutter's grave errors the truth was being sought as a brown and white investigating committee set out to prove that an error had been made in cutting the inscription 89 in the new steps leading to the flagpole those steps erected by that class for its 50th reunion proponents of the orthodox style claimed that the comma preceeding the 89 was reversed others wanted to be shown thus the pilgrimage to com pare the new steps with other campus monuments research proved that the latest addition had a comma style distinctly its own all other stone work bethlehem pa friday may 19 1939
