rehearsals and final arrange ments are rapidly being completed for the mustard and cheese dra matic club's presentation of the petrified forest on friday night at liberty high school after the startling bursts of gun fire in the dramatic workshop's production of winterset the au dience should be prepared for any thing one machine gun and an as sortment of approximately 12 pis tols rifles and shot guns has been rounded up for use friday night although mr sherwood's play has a deceptive gloss of realism and vivid speech says the new york times it is at bottom warm ly sentimental though the plot has familiar aspects which can be seen through its modern dress mr sherwood decorates it with spark ling comments ranging over a var iety of topics from the american legion to french characteristics the author peoples a gas station at a lonely crossroads in arizona with a bankrupt writer who is bumming his way across the coun try and a gang of desperados who are fleeing from a malaria and head-hunters he prefaced his talk with the re mark out of hundreds of small boats that start out each year with ambitions of sailing around the world less than ten have ever been successful according to the law of averages i should not be standing here alive meets will rogers he went on to tell of the begin ning of his trip his meeting with will rogers and ex-president hoo ver and how his plans came lose to being wrecked when his boat the idle hour barely escaped destruction as a tidal wave surged through san francisco harbor he sailed to tahiti where he met nordhoff and hall the co-authors of mutiny on the bounty he vis ited an island inhabited by a half caste tribe which at one time had to resort to cannibalism in order to stave off starvation he lived for a time with head-hunters in new guinea where a boy was not con sidered a man until he had ac quired the head of an enemy he was detained off the coast of spain suspected of being a would-be as sassin of general franco he inter spersed his adventurous tales with the story of his tahitian boy-com panion who finally died of malaria in columbo after lustily applauding captain long the sophs sang the alma offered to the best speakers in each of the class groups this afternoon at 2:30 o'clock the entrants met to draw subjects on which to speak and also to draw for positions all of tonight's speeches will be unrehearsed pres entations selections for contestants in the final round of the contest on may 10 will rest upon the decisions of the judges in the freshman contest each speaker will be allowed to talk for six minutes and in the up per class bracket each is allowed eight minutes speaking time all judges in tonight's contest are members of the department of english judging the council norman l morse was declared elected last night by the elections committee also to be elected is the head cheerleader from a group of five tomorrow there will be 25 can didates on the ballots to fill a total of five positions after the elections the ballots will be turned over to dr claude g beardslee head of the depart ment of moral and religious phil osophy who with a faculty assist ant of his own choice will count the ballots they will be assisted by one member of each of the three students governing bodies the result of the elections will be published in the friday issue of the held at le high friday and saturday the conference was opened at 10:00 o'clock friday morning by prof howard eckfeldt head of the department of mining and chair man of the committee on arrange ments of the engineering confer ence dr clement c williams president of the university deliv ered the welcome address to ap proximately 450 men williams extempore meet to begin at 7 p m in packard auditorium the williams extempore speak ing contest for 1939 will begin this evening at 7 o'clock in packard auditorium as nine freshmen and 14 upper classmen begin competi tion for the prize money offered to the best speakers in each of the class groups this afternoon at 2:30 o'clock the entrants met to draw subjects on which to speak and also to draw for positions all of tonight's speeches will be unrehearsed pres entations selections for contestants in the final round of the contest on may 10 will rest upon the decisions of the judges in the freshman contest each speaker will be allowed to talk for six minutes and in the up per class bracket each is allowed eight minutes speaking time all judges in tonight's contest are members of the department of english judging the freshman en tries will be messrs ellerman gertz winship and kost for the other division drs severs sloane green and woods will act as judg es j calvin callaghan director of debating who has been in officers the delegate at large to arcadia will be selected from the six can didates whose names will be made known on the ballots tomorrow the only candidate for the position of president of the town council norman l morse was declared elected last night by the elections committee also to be elected is the head cheerleader from a group of five tomorrow there will be 25 can didates on the ballots to fill a total of five positions after the elections the ballots will be turned over to dr claude g beardslee head of the depart ment of moral and religious phil osophy who with a faculty assist ant of his own choice will count the ballots they will be assisted by one member of each of the three students governing bodies the result of the elections will be published in the friday issue of the
