ing promised by mary virginia ernest in these days of democracy even a king must take orders so it is that the king of swing benny goodman has taken the instruction of the junior prom committee and will slow down the tempo of his music when he plays for that aff air friday evening at dorney park swing music of course will re sound from the walls of castle garden on numerous occasions dur ing the evening which ushers in lehigh's annual spring houseparty the committee has asked goodman personally to present a well-bal anced program one which will please swing enthusiasts as well as those who favor the slower type of music a double battery of amplifiers has ben installed which will allow the music to be heard in all parts of the dance floor certain dead spots on the floor which in the past caused the music there to be inaudiable have been eliminated parking facilities have been checked carefully by the commit tee provision has been made for attendants to handle congestion in case of rain cars may be driven directly to the entrance to castle garden in an attempt to alleviate the problem of checking the commit tee has hired extra checkers and has procured two rooms in which to deposit wraps tickets are on sale this week in drown hall and at the supply bur eau they may also be purchased from any of the three members of the prom committee they are albert collins bus 40 chair man wallace watkins bus 40 and carl fittkau arts 40 lehigh to receive menough estate four-fifths of the estate of lu ther d menough 01 who died february 13 will be received by lehigh upon the death of his wid ow according to walter r oke son treasurer the money which will be deriv ed from a residual legacy is to be put in the general endowment fund after 12,500 legacies have been deducted beta theta pi fraternity will be given 1,000 outright while 5,000 will be subtracted from the trust fund upon the death of mrs men ough to be put in trust for the fraternity the earnings of this trust fund will be given each year to the outstanding senior of the beta theta pi fraternity discuss athletic relations between 2 schools ; favor conciliation action will be taken definite action to seek to reduce antagonism between lehigh uni versity and muhlenberg college was taken by a joint meeting of the chapters of omicron delta kappa honorary activities society of the two schools held last night at the phi delta theta fraternity house the meeting was attended by 18 lehigh men and 11 students and three faculty members of muhlen berg athletics relations between the two schools were discussed with special attention being paid to the incident of the last muhlenberg basketball game at which a fight took place on the floor the action of the meeting ran contrary to that portion of student opinion that favored the severing of athletic relations between the two schools after some discussion both societies resolved to recom mend to their respective athletic departments that outside officials be obtained for future games that space behind the visting team's bench be reserved for spectators of the visiting schools and that each society act collectively and as indi viduals to reduce the feeling of an tagonism between the schools and to promote good sportsmanship be tween the student bodies further discussion of the meet ing was concerned with a compari son of the general actions of the two societies and of their methods of election a desire was expressed for more intimate contact between the two schools in an informal way the next meeting of the society wil be on april 30 o to build 2 homes university will utilize brodhead estate work will be started this spring on two residences to be built on property which belonged to the brodhead estate and which is now a part of the brodhead memorial fund of the university announced walter r okeson treasurer of the university the houses will be built by the university on the property which is located between church and wall streets on center street cash from the brodhead memor ial fund will be used to finance the building of the seven-room houses bids have been received from con tactors and will be awarded in the near future by marie gushen way back in 1932 some of the brown and white boys got the brilliant idea of inviting the liber tas girls over to do an issue of their semi-weekly the idea was prim arily to create a feeling of good will which was so steadfast that it has lasted til now and from ap pearances it will go on and on due to this good will the staff has made its annual appearance ants marjory ann jolly carolyn hall and jean kemmerle the beats were assigned as fol lows alumni marjorie wright packard laboratory mary jane morris administration wanda steinke christmas-saucon betty barrett packer — fritz bernice brisker coppee hall and the chemistry building emma smink williams hall david trageser and the business beat marjorie nemes bob holland acted as sports edi tor irene bragg wrote the wise and othrewise column and mary gail ford wrote the l u say col umn o leonard talks to faculty lt col joseph s leonard head of the department of military sci ence and tactics gave a talk on purpose policy and methods of the department of military science and tactics at the april meeting of the faculty educational club held yesterday afternoon in the faculty room paddle rather than swallow for two lehigh frosh marjorie m nemes lehigh students have not yet fol lowed the goldfish trend but the engineers don't dare brag much after the adventure of two students saturday the amazing events started when two freshmen walter glea dall and michael bosak made a bet with their fellow students at the sigma nu fraternity to take a trip to philadelphia via the le high and delaware rivers in an 18 foot kayak the students left the hill to hill bridge wearing jackets and sweat ers at easton at 6:45 having rounded the two falls between the two cities they had their dinner in an easton restaurant once again on their journey on the delaware their luck continued until the rudder snagged in the branches of a submerged tree at carpenterville n j after much spinning the boat finally capsized after shedding their clothes and swimming to the new jersey shore clad only in shorts the duo resumed their journey walking along the pennsylvania railroad tracks toward carpenterville encountering two railroad men and telling them their story the students were furnished with clo thing locating a telephone the boys notified the new jersey po lice and finally got a lift to east on they were turned over to the pennsylvania motor police who returned them without further mishap to the sigma nu house the losers did not reveal the sum of the bet or the names of the winners sailed around world in 2 years with 32 foot sailboat to be held on may 1 dwight long who sailed 35,000 miles around the world in the 32 foot ketch the idle hour has been secured as the speaker for the sophomore class banquet to be held may 1 at the hotel bethle hem announced donald r schoen arts 41 president of the sopho more class after being educated at the pub lic schools of seattle washington and attending the unuiversity of washington for two years long decided on his world cruise in 1936 in order to obtain what he called a liberal education in his own way he will speak of his experiences on the cruise which took him from seattle to san francisco hawaii tahiti australia india france england and ended in new york city last may he changed shipmates six times during the two years it took him to make the cruise of the six one died two others became ill an other was too inexperienced and the other two deserted while on his trip he met such well-known explorers as alan villiers zane grey and mr and mrs martin johnson author of the best seller seven seas on a shoestring long has been lecturing to college audiences in america england and scotland during the past nine 17 a lecture by a well known test pilot may 20 regular club meeting at the allen town-bethlehem airport athletic directors to at tend testimonial banquet on friday night athletic officials of 12 rivals of university teams who have been closely associated with col nelson a kellogg director of athletics during the past six years have been invited to attend the testi monial diner to be tendered him friday evening at the hotel beth lehem charles h h weikel director of commercial research at bethlehem steel company and chairman of the civic committee planning the fare well dinner announced that rep resentatives of many local organi zations wil be present in addition to the athletic directors and coach es from eastern colleges and uni versities the banquet which is to be open to the to folger library will return to america charles t prouty a former in structor in english has been awar ded a fellowship to the folger lib rary in washington d c announ ced dr robert m smith head of the department of english mr prouty received his bachelor of arts degree from dartmouth in 1931 and then went to cambridge university where he received a higher degree from st john's col lege in 1933 he came to lehigh as an instruc tor in english in september of 1936 and remained here through the spring of 1938 while here he taught freshman composition and literature a study of the drama and the renaissance after leaving lehigh mr prouty went to england and at the pres ent time is there doing research work on gascoigne he is working in the public record office and pre paring his thesis on gascoigne in preparation for his doctor's degree mr prouty received the fellow ship in january of this year and will return to the united states during the summer he will use the fellowship for research work on the elizabethan period o farewell banquet given by riflemen major gerber honored elect dallen captain by marjorie wright a farewell banquet for major theodore gerber assistant profes sor of military science and tactics was given by the university rifle club friday night at the old sun inn major gerber who during his four year stay at lehigh coached the rifle team to 19 dual meet vic tories as compared with 7 defeats will leave the university at the end of the present scholastic year he has been transferred to duty in the regular army ordnance manufac turing carl l steig i e 40 captain of the team this year presented major gerber with a watch and chain in behalf of the rifle club sgt george gazda assistant in military science and tactics was one of the speakers john a
