banquet at the hotel bethlehem sponsored jointly by the lehigh and lafayette chapters of phi beta kappa national scholastic honor ary fraternity this will be the sec ond appearance of dr erskine be fore a lehigh audience he addressed a large group on dec 2nd 1930 in packard auditor ium when eta sigma phi national classical society celebrated the virgil bi-millenium his topic was virgil after 2,000 years he has written over 35 books dealing with problems of poetry and literature several of his nov els have been black-listed in var ious cities has received many degrees three years following his grad uation from columbia university in 1900 dr erskine received his doctor of philosophy degree he was a member of the columbia staff 35 years before retiring in 1937 he has received honorary de nesday that the welfare work they had done for the mexican settle ment on bethlehem steel company property had been ruined by a line in a poem entitled coco-a and a picture of a mexican named gomez with his family with the caption have you met the greasy dirty lousy drunken mexican under neath it that was published in the march issue of the lehigh review the poem was written by frank norris c e 41 and louis stou men arts 39 and joseph b boyle bus 39 were responsible for the pictures no official action has been taken by the university according to norris the offend ing line in the poem was written to express the american attitude to wards mexicans he declared it to be an attempt to give a picture of a type of people living in bethlehem with the absence of any attempt at reform of the conditions under which these people live and that it was intended purely as satire the picture aroused the anger of gomez and he complained to a teacher in a school run by social workers for the
