assistant managers elected at meeting varsity loses on northern trip vol xxix no 57 faculty adopts new honor code third and final game of series will be played at easton next saturday batsmen will again meet lafayette hopkins twelve downs lehigh price five cents w r okeson addresses student body on doings of alumni week brown and white team in fine trim to avenge recent defeats triple tie in southern division caused by saturday's un expected defeat vermont defeats brown and white 11 to 1 while holy cross wins 14 to 0 important changes in rules passed at faculty meeting last friday score 3 - 1 team hits slump rough playing by both teams mars important league game lehigh unable to stop heavy hitting of strong new england teams lehigh's opportunity to win the lacrosse championship of the south ern division received a rude jolt on saturday when the brown and white stickmen were downed by johns hopkins 3 to 1 the result places lehigh pennsylvania and johns hopkins in a triple tie for the championship this week these three colleges are engaged in final examinations and although lehigh is anxious to play off the tie it ap pears probably that the champion ship will remain undecided saturday's game was marred by rough playing and high feeling by both sides a fast hard game was played and both teams were out to win lehigh drew first blood about the middle of the opening encounter when bradley received a pretty pass from strauch and cleverly shot the ball into the net this score seem ed to put new life into the hop kins men and by dint of fine play ing they scored their first counter soon after continued on page three just before the half ended a hop kins man struck wilson with his stick the crowds poured out on the field and for a minute it looked as if there would be a general free for-all order was restored how ever and the game proceeded the northern baseball trip was a disastrous journey for the lehigh baseball squad not only was the team defeated but the nine was lit erally overwhelmed the only en couraging feature of the whole trip is that such defeats will put the team in fine mettle to play real ball against muhlenberg and lafayette on friday our old rivals and tom keady's former proteges ad ministered a crushing defeat to the brown and white 11 to 1 the game was marked by terrific slug ging and loose fielding it must be admitted that vermont had the team and the victory was well de served the following day holy cross took a fall out of the lehigh bats men the final score being 14 to 0 again the heavy hitting of the holy cross nine served to place them well in the lead the first inning passed without a score but in the second holy cross found johnny lees and before the side was put out had scored four runs until the unlucky seventh both teams played air-tight ball but in this inning the holy cross sluggers let loose an avalanche of hits and before the smoke of battle had ceas ed ten runners had crossed the plate the worcester collegians garnered a total of 15 hits while lehigh with five safeties was unable to score continued on page two at a meeting of the faculty on friday morning the recommenda tions of the joint committee of the faculty and arcadia pertaining to the new honor code were adopted in full these new regulations place the student body absolutely on its honor in all examinations the rules as adopted are : — 1 in cases of infraction of the honor system where the verdict is guilty and this verdict is approv ed by the faculty the penalty shall be suspension 2 that a disinterested represen tative of the teaching staff appoint ed by the chairman of the disci pline committee be present at all honor court trials in order that the faculty may have first-hand infor mation as to the manner in which the trials are conducted and to ren der such assistance to the honor court as may be requested 3 that the faculty uphold all decisions by the honor court what ever the verdict unless they have reason to believe that there has been a gross miscarriage of justice in which case a conference between committees of the faculty and of the arcadia will consider the case on its merits before final action is taken by the faculty 4 that the faculty rules regard ing cheating in university exercises be changed as follows : rule 27 — delete last two words of first sen tence rules 28 31 and 61 to be stricken out rule 29 to be chang ed to read all cases of infraction of the honor system in the uni versity whether discovered by stu dents or members of the faculty shall be referred to the joint pen alty many of the muhlenberg supporters from allentown will come over in the hopes of seeing muhlenberg put ov er another victory as they did last fall in football the lehigh team has been play ing in hard luck lately and has lost the last four games n a row los ing to lafayette catholic univer sity vermont and holy cross in the order named however the team is going to put over every ef fort possible in order to get rid of the jinx which seems to be pursu ing them an example of the hard luck which is pursuing the team was in the game last wednesday with catholic university when with the game practically cinched at 3 to 1 in lehigh's favor in the ninth in ning catholic university scored three runs and victory on a fluke homer which a lehigh fielder help ed over the fence a decided brace is looked for ttp day however and as the muhlen berg team hasn't shown much this year victory is practically assured muhlenberg has only an average team and they have won only a fair percentage of their games this season the muhlenberg line-up will probably be as follows shook lb ; witt c.f ; crum c ; holstrum 3b ; slower r.f ; drimm 2b ; laderas 1.f ; freed s.s ; and hoffman or wesson p the lehigh line-up has not yet been decided upon but some important changes may be looked for coach keady is trying his best to get the team out of its slump lafayette netmen will again be opponents edgewood arsenal in preparation for r.o.t.c the last game of the three-game baseball series with lafayette will be played at easton on saturday afternoon june 3rd since the sec ond game of the series which was played on taylor field the easton ians have lost to princeton and won from susquehanna with the re spective scores of 9 to 2 and 5 to 2 in that same time the brown and white squad has been unsuccessful in three engagements namely cath olic university university of ver mont and holy cross coach keady has been putting special stress on the fielding prac tice of the squad the last few days and a noticeable improvement in this department of the game has taken place poor hitting has marked the performance of the squad in the last few games but this fault seems to have been over come and the brown and white batsmen are back in their old form the team is doing its best to come out of the slump which has been so apparent during the last few games when the alumni are here on the ninth and tenth of june coach keady wants to show them a winning ball team and end the season with victories over fordham and colgate lately he has experi mented in changes in the line-up and some surprises may be looked for the lafayette line-up will prob ably be the same that performed here in the last game with either longacre or tierney on the mound the probable lehigh line-up is as follows rote s.s ; donovan 2b rogers r.f ; johnson 3b ; hess 1.f rowley 1.b ; larkin c.f read or henschen c ; and lees or dußois p announcements as to the trans portation arrangements to easton on the third will be made later it is hoped that a large delegation from the student body will accom pany the team at the last college meeting of the year which was held friday morning in packer hall the stu dents voted for assistant mana gers in the following sports : base ball lacrosse track and tennis the results of the ballot were as follows — assistant managers of baseball r h allan and l tre maine assistant managers of la crosse g o lundberg and w p wooldridge ; assistant managers of track r w adams and s l hauser and assistant managers of tennis k donaldson and c m bortz after the ballot was taken wal ter okeson okey secretary of the alumni association spoke to the college on alumni week as not merely a week which was to be at tended by only the members of the senior class and returning alumni but that it should be a big week for all undergraduates and the old cus tom of everybody attending should be resumed he explained to the freshman class and sophomores what their duties were that week and very earnestly emphasized the fact that all or as many as possi ble be present from these classes that week he gave an idea of what the calculus cremation was supposed to be and how it was to be run saying the junior class should aid the sophomores by giv ing them ideas on the part they are to play and that the duty of the freshman is to haul the wood for the big bon-fire he also urged that there be a greater line of demarcation made between the two upper classes and that these two classes shoulder more responsibility in the future while the two lower classes give their most hearty co-operation and in this way re-establish that mark of distinction which existed before the war after okey gave his talk pres ident a w hicks made a few re marks to the students on okey's address urging them to give their co-operation in the future seventeenth bach festival proves a great success sophomores picked as cheer leaders sophs pick officers and epitome board major lang and captain bald win of the department of military science and tactics are at edge wood arsenal maryland where a corps of regular army men are at work preparing for the r o t c camp this summer all colleges located in the third corps area maintaining r o t c units will send their men to this camp as he was last year at platts burg major lang will be the chief executive officer of the camp a mong the instructors will be cap tain bell captain hollingsworth and sergeants boyle lavin and al derson all from the lehigh r o t c unit there will be more men from le high at the camp than from any other institution and chances are mighty good for the brown and white to again have the crack com pany of the camp under a new plan submitted by the cyanide club instead of the sophomore candidates for cheer leaders being voted upon at a col lege meeting the senior cheer lead ers choose five of the candidates the five men picked as doing the most consistent work during the competition were a g blake r d warriner h t litke p h stern and j s grim these five men will act as junior cheer leaders next year at the end of the year the student body will choose three of the five to be senior cheer leaders the head cheer leader for next year will be picked within the next few days by vote of the junior and senior members of the cheering staff cyanide club elects new members the brown and white racquet wielders will face the lafayette net men for the second time next sat urday at easton the lehigh team has been playing a very steady game and last wednesday defeated the maroon varsity when they journey ed to bethlehem by a 4 to 2 score however a much more decisive vic tory is looked forward to as the lehigh netmen were not up to their usual form the lafayette team has some very fast players and the third set was necessary in nearly all of the matches captain beck won from cullingham in a hard match 6-2 4-6 6-3 mattson won his singles match in straight sets 6-1 6-1 which gave him a record of not losing a match this season beale and koegler al though they lost their singles match es put up a hard fight in the dou bles lehigh won both matches with little difficulty much is expected of mattson the newest member of the brown and white quintette who has yet to be defeated captain beck can also be counted on to win his match with out difficulty prospects are bright for two straight wins over our down-the-river rivals notice combined musical clubs will meet tonight the student body should remem ber that all gymnasium locker keys must be turned in before june 10th the department of physical edu cation desires that this rule be strictly adhered to in order to avoid confusion next year at the banquet recently held by the cyanide club at the kurtz res taurant elections of new spring steen 24 a b sayre 24 and j f rogers 24 tremendously difficult role to sing she performed in a manner worthy only of the highest praise to nicholas douty equal credit must be given known throughout the country as one of the greatest bach soloists the great tenor far surpassed his record of former years with the choir the burden of song which falls to the lot of the tenor voice mr douty carried through scarcely faltering a note to the other soloists equal praise must be given mr pattern the baritone singing for the first time as a bach soloist registered his in itial triumph likewise mrs faas the soprano and mr tittmann the bass contributed their share to the successes of the day continued on page four as great as was the rendition of st matthew's passion yet it could scarcely be compared with the way in which the great masterpiece of bach the mass in b-minor was rendered on saturday afternoon at 1 30 and 4 rendered year after year by the choir bach's great mas terpiece more and more grips the hearts of those who find themselves lifted to higher planes by sacred music from the opening chord of the kyrie of the mass every voice and instrument united in thrilling the vast assemblage this evening at 7:15 o'clock the combined musical clubs will hold an important meeting in drown hall some important plans for next year will be discussed and election of officers will take place every member of both the glee and mandolin clubs is urged to be present the sophomore class held a meeting in coppee hall on thurs day at noon at which time nomina tions for officers for next year were made the men from the class on the editorial boards of the brozvn and white and the burr were nom inated for the 1924 epitome board the election was held on friday representative y springsteen through a mis take in printing the ballots the name of one of the men nominated for historian was omitted so that a new election will probably be held for historian the editorial board of the 1924 epitome will be composed of e t adams c m alford e v ben nett b s galloway r r hauser and a g blake the business staff of the 1924 epitome is composed of h t litke business manager c t cornelius assistant business continued on page four the members of the bach choir under the leadership of dr j fred vyolle added another triumph to their long list of successes at their annual festival last friday and sat urday lehigh's dignifying ivy-clad chapel was full to overflowing at each of the four sessions while out side on her spacious campus hun dreds enjoyed the melodious notes that permeated from every door and window starting off with bach's great re ligious drama st matthew's pas sion chorus on friday afternoon the choir and soloists held the vast audience spell bound with their masterful interpretation this was the first time this difficult chorus has been given since 1913 and to say that it was masterfully render ed is to say the least the choir the soloists the children's chorus the orchestra and the individual members of the choir who were called upon to sing minor roles all acquitted themselves splendidly add ing their bit to the harmonious whole great credit must be given to all the soloists for their splendid work to miss beddoe alto soloist at both sessions great credit must be given for her splendid work singing without score which annual festival last friday and sat urday lehigh's dignifying ivy-clad chapel was full to overflowing at each of the four sessions while out side on her spacious campus hun dreds enjoyed the melodious notes that permeated from every door and window starting off with bach's great re ligious drama st matthew's pas sion chorus on friday afternoon the choir and soloists held the vast audience spell bound with their masterful interpretation this was the first time this difficult chorus has been given since 1913 and to say that it was masterfully render ed is to say the least the choir the soloists the children's chorus the orchestra and the individual members of the choir who were called upon to sing minor roles all acquitted themselves splendidly add ing their bit to the harmonious whole great credit must be given to all the soloists for their splendid work to miss beddoe alto soloist at both sessions great credit must be given for her splendid work singing without score which
