sword and crescent elects new officers catholic u nine wins weird game vol xxix no 56 hopkins twelve is last opponent netmen outplay lafayette team double defeat of crawford by brown and white runners feature annual meet annual banquet at new hotel is scene of balloting for new club officials baltimore ccllegians alone stand in path of lacrosse team's third championship headed by captain beck le high's crack tennis team downs maroon 4-2 coach keady's proteges will meet holy cross and ver mont on week-end trip tainted home run by visitors in final frame chases win ning tally across plate team is in top form dubois is effective snappy practices indicate that lehigh stick wielders should garner an easy win freshman hurler exhibits all kinds of form on mound final count 4 - 3 the last meeting of the retiring members of the sword and cres cent club was held on tuesday ev ening in the form of a banquet this banquet was the first univer sity function to be held in the new hotel and from all reports is not likely to be the last preceding the banquet the regular business ses sion of the club was held at which time the affairs of the organization were turned over to the new mem bers and the elected officers for next year the officers of the sword and crescent for next year are j f sprague president h d gihon vice president h h dußois secretary and r m beck treas urer the banquet which was held im mediately after the business session was in the form of a general get together rather than a more formal affair and needless to say was great ly enjoyed by the members the 1922 members of the club have now released their hold on the affairs of the society and the members of 1923 will now uphold her standards delta tau delta five wins basketball cup the lehigh track team lost its last dual match of the year last wednesday when it went down to defeat before the strong lafayette squad by a score of 77 to 35 there were several bright spots for le high even in this defeat however bray defeated crawford in the mile run and mcpherson also outrun crawford in the 880 which is the first time in four years that craw ford has lost a race to a lehigh runner leconey the star sprinter of the maroon team had little trouble in walking away with the 100-yard dash when he did it in ten seconds flat kelly of lafayette finished second while carol of lehigh came in a very close third kelly of lafayette won the 220 yard dash doing it in 22 2 /$ seconds he was hard-pressed all the way by burgess and leister of lehigh who finished in second and third places respectively mallick of lafayette just nosed out burgess of lehigh in the 440 yard dash in the extremely good time of 53 seconds ; springsteen of lehigh third the mile run was the feature event of the afternoon bray the brown and white captain was in excellent form and outclassed craw ford of lafayette by doing the continued on page four lehigh professors again down lafayette lehigh's crack racquet-wielders despite the fact that they were not quiite up to their usual snappy game easily took the lafayette netmen in to camp on wednesday by the score of 4 to 2 lafayette is credited with having a fast tennis aggregation but lehigh's victory on wednesday leaves no doubt which college has the superior team with the excep tion of a slight bit of erratic play ing in the singles the brown and white men carried the attack most of the way and at no time during the afternoon was the result of the meet greatly in doubt the victory over the easton team adds another success to lehigh's rapidly-increasing string of credits when one considers that it was a decisive win scored over a lafay ette team the victory seems all the more impressive this added suc cess of the clay court artists proves once more that in the tennis team lehigh has a group of champion ship calibre capt beck of the lehigh team as usual could have been chalked up for a sure win he was pitted against a fast player in cullingham of lafayette but proved the better player when he took his match in sets 6-2,4 - 6 and 6-3 mattson of lehigh still retained his honor of not being defeated this season when he easily took two straight sets 6-1 6-1 mattson counting wednesday's victory has won five straight matches mattson had his opponent on the go throughout his match and played an exceptionally speedy game beale and koegler could not seem to get started both dropping their matches to lafayette opponents by close scores lehigh continued on page two undaunted by the recent rever sal at the hands of the catholic university nine the brown and white tossers have left for new england to try conclusions to-mor row with the star holy cross aggre gation the new englanders again have an exceptionally fast team this year and have already administer ed sound drubbings to teams of the same calibre as yale and harvard lafayette was recently decisively beaten by an 8 to 6 count last year the lehigh batsmen garnered a 2 to 1 victory in a thrilling con test and they are out to repeat last year's conquest si simendinger erstwhile lehigh star is the best bet of the holy cro^s clubbers holding down an outfield position he has led the team with the stick throughout the entire season as a preliminary to the holy cross tilt the lehigh squad will cross bats with the unuiversity of vermont team friday in a return game coach keady's proteges have already chalked up one victory over the green mountain lads and are strong favorites to repeat dußois or adams will in all probability as sume the hurling duties continued on page two the brown and white line-up will be intact with the possible exr ception of adams who may be kept on the side-lines due to an in fected finger contracted in last sat urday's fracas in the event of his absence his shoes will in all proba bility be filled by larkin whose sensational catches in the left gar den saturday against the maroon will linger long in the minds of le high fans the catcher's position is the only other post left in doubt either read will again assume his seventeenth bach festival in packer chapel this week in one of the fastest games of the inter fraternity basketball tournament the delta tau delta five defeated the sigma phi quintet on monday by a score of 21 to 15 thus coming out victors in the tournament the game was a thril ler throughout and was entirely a running and passing game at the end of the first half the sigma phi team was in the lead with a score of 12 to 10 in the second half the delts tightened up on their defense and at the same time opened up on their offense and soon gained the lead which they maintained until the end of the pe riod sayre was the high scorer for the losers caging three beauti ful shots from very difficult angles gilmour led the delta tau tossers with a record of five goals and three fouls to his credit delta tau delta sigma phi wilmot g childs meyer g wood beck c ... mcwilliams sansom f sayre gilmour f foote substitutions-sprague for foote goals — gilmour 5 sayre 3 beck 2 mcwilliams 2 sprague wilmot sansom woods fouls — gilmour 3 out of 3 ; the lehigh - hopkins game always winding up the collegiate lacrosse season and attracting the attention of lacrosse followers throughout the united states the rivalry be tween these two colleges is greater than between any other teams in the league and they have met in more title games than any other combination since the inauguration of the league a victory for the brown and white twelve to-morrow will mean a clear title to the championship of the southern division of the inter collegiate lacrosse league where as a hopkins victory will result in a triple tie between lehigh hop kins and university of pennsylva nia hopkins surrendered to the superiority of the red and blue team on may 13th and lehigh best ed the latter aggregation last satur day on taylor field by a 3 to 1 score lacrosse critics who wit nessed both the pennsylvania-hop kins and lehigh-pennsylvania la crosse games predict a victory for the lehigh stickmen the triumph of the brown and white over swarthmore earlier in the season was more decisive than hopkins's 6 to 5 score over the little quakers last week it requiring two extra ten-minute periods to enable the blue and black to break the dead lock score the baltimore press at tribute hopkins's close victories throughout the season as being due to the over-conditioning of the men for the ox ford cambridge game early on the schedule having had the laurels of southern division taken from them the past two years by lehigh will lend a different as pect to the fracas to-morrow and the baltimore collegians will extend themselves to throw lehigh into deadlock continued on page four coach o'neil has been holding but light practices during the week most of the time being spent in stickwork passing and shooting the scrimmages that have been held have been short in order not to over-condition the men but the workouts have been evidenced by a snap that indicates that the brown and white stick-wielders are out af ter the crown whitney has been juniors notice the football practice fcr the fall of 1922 will begin wednesday sep tember 6th the deficiency of heavy linesmen is the big problem coach baldwin will have to face and he therefore requests that all men over 175 pounds whether they have played football or not report to professor reiter to-day at 4 p m in his office men who will report for early practice will be no tified in due time in addition professor reiter requests that all gymnasium locker keys be turned in before june 10th owing to the small number of votes cast in the recent balloting for junior class officers additional op portunities will be given to cast bal lots to-day and to-morrow the votes may be cast from 3 to 5 o'clock this afternoon and from 10 to 12 o'clock to-morrow morn ing men who have already voted are ineligible to again cast ballots at this time the lafayette professors were defeated for the second time to-day on their home grounds a rally staged in the seventh inning was responsible for the final big score of 13 to 9 professor kreidler who started the rally with a home run that nearly knocked down the fence was proclaimed the hero of the day the game was an exciting one from the first and some great ball was played by both teams the lehigh infield looked es pecially good throughout and cap tain bell for the second time show ed his ability as a catcher by his timely throws to the bases major lang pitched a crack game and suc ceeded in fanning several lafayette batsmen the lehigh battery was strong enough to knock three maroon hurlers off the mound and com pletely exhaust their pitching staff all of the lafayette professors showed good form and the work of dean heckel on second base was especially good marquard first on the mound proved to be a strong hitter but was soon replaced by kennard a rain of hits soon forced him to seek the bench how ever and gi llil and finished the game lafayette drew first blood by a single in the first inning shortly after the tide changed when the brown and white stickmen warm ed up the line-up : — lehigh lafayette ashbaugh lb shelly bell c smith glentzer s.s beaver becker 2b heckel bartlett l.f dufour kreidler 3b doushkiss lang p marquard lewis c.f bingham early r.f prentice all final arrangements have been made and the stage is all set for the seventeenth annual bach fes tival to be held to-day and to-mor row in packer chapel so closely has the festival come to be associa ted with the university by reason of the fact that it is held annually in the packer chapel many people look upon the event as a part of the life and activity of the uni versity the program this year promises to be one of the best in years hav ing besides the various choruses a large list of prominent soloists most of these have been previously identified with the annual event and have always brought credit not on ly to themselves but to the event as a whole the list includes emily stokes hagar soprano fred pat ton baritone ; and nicholas douty tenor these three artists will be included in both the friday and saturday performances besides these merle alcock noted contral to and lambert murphy well known tenor will be present for the saturday performance only the children's chorus of 100 voices a new addition to the usual program will make their initial ap pearance a final rehearsal of the choruses orchestra and soloists on the st matthew passion music was held last evening at 7 o'clock nearly 1000 relatives and friends of the choir were present as the guests of the evening dr j fred wolle director of the choir has worked hard for the last six months in preparing the program and in final preparation has spent the fore part of the week in philadelphia rehearsing with the philadelphia symphony orchestra and the so loists the text of st matthew's pas sion chorus which is to be given on friday can be found in the 26th and 27th chapters of the gospel ac cording to st matthew it might be well to notice in passing that the figures 26 and 27 mark not only the chapter in st matthew's gos pel which form a basis for bach's production but also mark the dates of the festival that the famous festival is known the country over is testified to by the number of guests and patrons who come to the annual affair from all parts of the country the choir performing under thie shadow of our university brings people from all parts into contact with our insti tution and in this way publicity re nown and honor is accorded to le high the festival is really an event of national renown which few of the student body seem to realize the lehigh racquet-wielders will have another opportunity to play the moravian college team on fri day afternoon on the moravian courts the boys from across the river have been showing better form than they did on their first appearance here and are expected to give a better battle for the hon ors the lehigh squad however has been greatly improved so there is little need for worry on saturday afternoon the net men will face the strong team from the university of north carolina on the home courts the southern ers have shown lots of stuff but should not cause any trouble for captain beck and his netmen bethlehem pa friday may 26 1922 brown and white lehigh ball team on northern trip maroon trackmen win by large score price five cents

the lehigh - hopkins game always winding up the collegiate lacrosse season and attracting the attention of lacrosse followers throughout the united states the rivalry be tween these two colleges is greater than between any other teams in the league and they have met in more title games than any other combination since the inauguration of the league a victory for the brown and white twelve to-morrow will mean a clear title to the championship of the southern division of the inter collegiate lacrosse league where as a hopkins victory will result in a triple tie between lehigh hop kins and university of pennsylva nia hopkins surrendered to the superiority of the red and blue team on may 13th and lehigh best ed the latter aggregation last satur day on taylor field by a 3 to 1 score lacrosse critics who wit nessed both the pennsylvania-hop kins and lehigh-pennsylvania la crosse games predict a victory for the lehigh stickmen the triumph of the brown and white over swarthmore earlier in the season was more decisive than hopkins's 6 to 5 score over the little quakers last week it requiring two extra ten-minute periods to enable the blue and black to break the dead lock score the baltimore press at tribute hopkins's close victories throughout the season as being due to the over-conditioning of the men for the ox ford cambridge game early on the schedule having had the laurels of southern division taken from them the past two years by lehigh will lend a different as pect to the fracas to-morrow and the baltimore collegians will extend themselves to throw lehigh into deadlock continued on page four coach o'neil has been holding but light practices during the week most of the time being spent in stickwork passing and shooting the scrimmages that have been held have been short in order not to over-condition the men but the workouts have been evidenced by a snap that indicates that the brown and white stick-wielders are out af ter the crown whitney has been juniors notice the football practice fcr the fall of 1922 will begin wednesday sep tember 6th the deficiency of heavy linesmen is the big problem coach baldwin will have to face and he therefore requests that all men over 175 pounds whether they have played football or not report to professor reiter to-day at 4 p m in his office men who will report for early practice will be no tified in due time in addition professor reiter requests that all gymnasium locker keys be turned in before june 10th owing to the small number of votes cast in the recent balloting for junior class officers additional op portunities will be given to cast bal lots to-day and to-morrow the votes may be cast from 3 to 5 o'clock this afternoon and from 10 to 12 o'clock to-morrow morn ing men who have already voted are ineligible to again cast ballots at this time the lafayette professors were defeated for the second time to-day on their home grounds a rally staged in the seventh inning was responsible for the final big score of 13 to 9 professor kreidler who started the rally with a home run that nearly knocked down the fence was proclaimed the hero of the day the game was an exciting one from the first and some great ball was played by both teams the lehigh infield looked es pecially good throughout and cap tain bell for the second time show ed his ability as a catcher by his timely throws to the bases major lang pitched a crack game and suc ceeded in fanning several lafayette batsmen the lehigh battery was strong enough to knock three maroon hurlers off the mound and com pletely exhaust their pitching staff all of the lafayette professors showed good form and the work of dean heckel on second base was especially good marquard first on the mound proved to be a strong hitter but was soon replaced by kennard a rain of hits soon forced him to seek the bench how ever and gi llil and finished the game lafayette drew first blood by a single in the first inning shortly after the tide changed when the brown and white stickmen warm ed up the line-up : — lehigh lafayette ashbaugh lb shelly bell c smith glentzer s.s beaver becker 2b heckel bartlett l.f dufour kreidler 3b doushkiss lang p marquard lewis c.f bingham early r.f prentice all final arrangements have been made and the stage is all set for the seventeenth annual bach fes tival to be held to-day and to-mor row in packer chapel so closely has the festival come to be associa ted with the university by reason of the fact that it is held annually in the packer chapel many people look upon the event as a part of the life and activity of the uni versity the program this year promises to be one of the best in years hav ing besides the various choruses a large list of prominent soloists most of these have been previously identified with the annual event and have always brought credit not on ly to themselves but to the event as a whole the list includes emily stokes hagar soprano fred pat ton baritone ; and nicholas douty tenor these three artists will be included in both the friday and saturday performances besides these merle alcock noted contral to and lambert murphy well known tenor will be present for the saturday performance only the children's chorus of 100 voices a new addition to the usual program will make their initial ap pearance a final rehearsal of the choruses orchestra and soloists on the st matthew passion music was held last evening at 7 o'clock nearly 1000 relatives and friends of the choir were present as the guests of the evening dr j fred wolle director of the choir has worked hard for the last six months in preparing the program and in final preparation has spent the fore part of the week in philadelphia rehearsing with the philadelphia symphony orchestra and the so loists the text of st matthew's pas sion chorus which is to be given on friday can be found in the 26th and 27th chapters of the gospel ac cording to st matthew it might be well to notice in passing that the figures 26 and 27 mark not only the chapter in st matthew's gos pel which form a basis for bach's production but also mark the dates of the festival that the famous festival is known the country over is testified to by the number of guests and patrons who come to the annual affair from all parts of the country the choir performing under thie shadow of our university brings people from all parts into contact with our insti tution and in this way publicity re nown and honor is accorded to le high the festival is really an event of national renown which few of the student body seem to realize the lehigh racquet-wielders will have another opportunity to play the moravian college team on fri day afternoon on the moravian courts the boys from across the river have been showing better form than they did on their first appearance here and are expected to give a better battle for the hon ors the lehigh squad however has been greatly improved so there is little need for worry on saturday afternoon the net men will face the strong team from the university of north carolina on the home courts the southern ers have shown lots of stuff but should not cause any trouble for captain beck and his netmen bethlehem pa friday may 26 1922 brown and white lehigh ball team on northern trip maroon trackmen win by large score price five cents |
