that city the gentlemen at lehigh university responded in an admirable manner to their student leadership last friday and saturday in spite of considerable pro vocation you allowed your in telligence hears local doctor dr valeria h parker 935 valentine notices issued brother rat in rehearsal dr v parker will present social counsel social relationship love and marriage is title of dec 1 talk paper secured speaker social relationship love and marriage will be the subject of the brown and white-sponsored talk to be presented by dr valeria hopkins parker at 8 p m thurs day dec 1 in packard auditorium the title of the talk has been changed from the previously an nounced courtship and marriage the talk is being sponsored by the lehigh paper to emphasize the suggestion of its editorial policy that a course should be started on marriage problems the speaker is director of the bureau of marriage counsel and honorary president of the national council of women she is also chairman of the committee on protective care for the new york world's fair and is the author of a book entitled social hygiene and the child she is a frequent contributor to the parent-teacher magazine and other periodicals won bishop medal on june 13 of this year dr parker was awarded the bishop medal the first to be presented to a woman for distinguished service in the field of social hygiene by miami university she was cited as a woman who has thought her own thoughts and pioneered in promoting better living through a wider understanding of social hy giene dr parker has been recommend ed by dr m a bigelow of colum bia university as having a rare combination of medical knowledge acquaintance with human nature in many of its phases and a great ability as a public speaker students may express their de sire for and show their interest in further study of the marriage question by attending dr parker's lecture stated willet weeks edi tor of the brown and white last night o artificial telephone line to be installed in lab an artificial telephone line equivalent to about 200 miles which will be used for research study of communication and power trans mission will be put into service within a few weeks in the com munications laboratory henry c i knutson assistant professor of electrical engineering announced recently this piece of equipment which if purchased would cost several thousand dollars was built by ar thur s mickley e e 40 the materials for the set-up were do nated to the school and the sys tem was calculated by george w klingaman e e 38 now a re search fellow over half of student body warned ; engineering frosh lead list valentines were sent to 935 of the 1837 registered students it was announced by dean wray h congdon today those receiving valentines make up 51 percent of the entire student body last no vember 53 percent received notices of failure dormitory men accounted for 160 of the valentines while frater nity men received 422 and the town group 353 freshman engineers led the list in number of notices received ac cording to curricula with 229 men notified when asked for a statement dean congdon stated that this year's crop seems to be about av erage though a study of the rec ords of past years indicates on the surface at least that lehigh has been getting higher calibre men in the last few years this conclu sion may be drawn from the fact that while 57 percent of the stu dents received november valen tines in the years from 1930 to 1933 inclusive only 51 percent re ceived them from 1934 to 1938 the complete list of valentine experience and newly discovered talent when it is pre sented dec 3 at liberty high school out of the 19 players in the vast 6 of the featured group have had roles in mustard and cheese shows the leading role of the play that of billy randolph the likable ca det with a penchant for trouble is taken by william barnard eng 41 whose work in men in white and ceiling zero has won no little recognition in lehigh dram atics this is barnard's first lead ing role supporting barnard in the lead is malcolm carrington bus 39 who takes the part of dan craw ford billy's roommate whose com mon sense helps out many bad situations the leading feminine role is be ing taken by virginia edwards a newcomer to mustard and cheese shows whose work in other out side plays has won her a part in brother rat she will portray joyce winfree the lovely lady who wins billy's love and causes him no end of trouble gusdorf has role of edwards in the chief supporting role is leila stoughton who has taken several roles in lehigh shows and is especially well-known for her work in the lehigh summer thea tre she will take the part of claire ramm the brilliant daugh ter of the commandant bing edwards young cadet pitcher around whom much of the action revolves is portrayed by robert gusdorf bus 42 lafayette president will address banquet of pi delta epsilon 12 states represented dr william m lewis president of lafayette college will be the speaker at the closing banquet of the national convention of pi delta epsilon honorary journalism fra ternity to be held saturday eve ning dec 3 at the hotel bethle hem in addition to the announcement of the banquet speaker henry t s heckman arts 39 chairman of the convention committee stated that delegates attending the four teenth national conclave would be housed at the various living groups on the campus women delegates will have moravian college for women as their headquarters representatives from approxi mately 40 colleges and universities from 12 different states are ex pected to attend the convention registration will be held on dec 1 at packard laboratory followed by an informal reception and tea business sessions are scheduled for saturday morning and after noon graduate of lake forest a native of michigan dr lewis graduated from lake forest col lege in illinois he has received advanced and honorary degrees from temple university lehigh university university of pennsyl vania university of rochester dickinson st john's and mary land colleges before coming to lafayette in 1927 he taught at lake forest and illinois colleges he served as pres ident of george washington uni versity from 1923 to 1927 dr lewis is the author of from a college platform and has writ ten numerous articles for nation ally known periodicals among the many honors bestowed upon him is the chevalier legion of honor cross anniversary of founding the convention will celebrate the thirtieth anniversary of the founding of pi delta epsilon at syracuse university past conven tions have been held at the uni versity of illinois university of california george washington university ohio state university pennsylvania state college and massachusetts institute of tech nology delegates are expected to repre sent chapters and various student publications of lafayette pennsyl vania state swarthmore union washington and jefferson hamil ton wittenberg bowdoin carle ton middlebury and michigan state colleges and george wash ington bucknell johns hopkins catholic american syracuse col gate cornell denison and st lawrence universities alpha kappa pi frosh whose capers copped cup tuberculosis is subject alpha epsilon delta pledges 13 men tuberculosis was the subject of the talk given by dr royal h mc cutcheon bethlehem physician at the r w hall pre-medical so ciety meeting thursday in pack ard laboratory the talk was illustrated by two reels of sound pictures which in cluded the showing of the three general methods of detecting tu berculosis use of stained slide and miscroscope tuberculine test and the x-ray suggests test program the disease described by dr mccutcheon as insidious is one whose symptoms may not occur until five years after infection a diagnosis may then discover tu berculosis five or six years before symptoms occur thus insuring prompt cure he stated that at le high there are possibly five or six students who have the disease dr mccutcheon suggested a program for lehigh students in which the freshmen would be giv en the tuberculine test and posi tive cases x-rayed the main pro gram is to protect those uninfected and guard the positive cases from greater danger by proper treat ment on the night of dr mccut cheon's talk 13 men were pledged to alpha epsilon delta honorary pre-medical fraternity they were william students and a for mer student were arrested by eas ton police at 4 a m saturday in fisher field at lafayette when the students were found armed with brushes and a bucket of white wash this incident occurred 24 hours after four lafayette men landed in the bethlehem jail for stealing the goal posts from tay lor stadium the feature of the smoker which preceded the pa jama parade fri day night was the competition be tween freshmen of 28 living groups for the honor of the most unique anti - lafayette display alpha kappa pi took the cup for a skit the gist of which is really elemen tal but which unfortunately can not be discussed here section 4-b of richards house won the dormi tory prize a year's subscription to esquire sons of lafayette alumni the men arrested at easton and charged with disorderly conduct were john croft arts 40 am brose delany c e 41 charles chipman jr bus 42 william mcconnell bus 42 f raymond wood jr bus 41 and harold masem eng 40 william baker a former student was also among those apprehended ironically enough two of the men chipman and wood are sons of lafayette alumni and wood is a grandson of the late judge ste wart of the northampton county court the men posted 7.50 bail apiece but failed to appear for a hearing before mayor joseph mor rison of easton yesterday morn ing thus forfeiting bail williams predicts victory the students who were arrested here were arrested by two beth lehem police as the lafayette men were driving toward easton with the goal posts piled on the running board of their car they were dis missed after paying costs before a city alderman each man paid 2.50 for scaling the walls of the athletic field master of ceremonies for the smoker was andrew bucky bu chanan mr buchanan was late in arriving at the gym and court land students celebrat ed their victory too freely and were arrested by the easton po lice when seen carrying a red cross flag the boys who gave their names as jay d boone and albert latto said they found the flag they each gave 7.50 bail for a hearing today three reports of pickpocketing were made after the game on sat urday a total of 324 was stolen from three spectators o coal conference plans discussed by committee the committee in charge of ar rangements for the second annual anthracite conference to be held here april 28-29 met today at the primros laboratory of anthracite industries inc over 1,500 contest for news pages at the main convention session which was held saturday morning the delegates representing 16 mid dle atlantic colleges and univer sities unanimously passed a reso lution condemning the current wave of anti-semetic feeling dickinson selected dickinson college was selected for the annual spring meeting which will be held in may the member papers also decided to conduct a poll on student opinion at the various campuses c william duncan interviewer columnist for the philadelphia evening public ledger and dean hoffman editor of the harrisburg patriot and evening news were the speakers at the closing ban quet of the convention saturday evening mr duncan also address ed the saturday morning session john l lewis speaks a surprise guest speaker at the saturday afternoon luncheon at hotel gettysburg was c.1.0 labor leader john l lewis mr lewis stopped at the hotel for lunch while on his way from the c.1.0 convention in pittsburgh to wash ington after some persuasion he was prevailed upon to say a few words to the delegates mr lewis stressed the importance of consid eration of economic maladjust ments he also cited the possible consequences to american labor of the japanese invasion of china and the economic expansion programs of germany and italy he urged that young men and women should carefully study the current eco nomic questions
