parsons alumni head asks open criticism from graduates cites f letter in article mediocre athletics at lehigh was discussed in an article by floyd w parsons 02 president of the alumni association which appears in the new alumni bulletin the article is called football policy mr parsons gives the opinion that close attention and a large meas ure of sympathetic help could b given to boys who are willing to take the time and make the effort to go out on the field and fight for us the alumni as well as the stu dents dislike having their friends kid them about the punk teams and naturally want to see our ath letics measure up to the best in the country the alumni at the meet ing of the lehigh club of new york in october have requested a complete analysis of past and present conditions respecting ath letic conditions received letters in sounding his preliminary note however mr parsons empha sized the fact that in the many let ters received from alumni not one criticized the coaches is conclusion mr parsons re quests lehigh men write their thoughts as such letters would be extremely helpful and appreciat ed in this issue are also two per sonality stories the first is that of david randall 28 head of the rare book department at charles scribner's sons in new york written by avery strakosch it is the story of a lehigh man who fol lowed his hobby into the field of enterprise and found a paying pro position has success story the second is a success story of leon mart 13 who coming upon a problem in his every day work recognized it as a relatively un charted new world for service to industry sees chances for bettering football team vol xlvi no 14 alpha kappa psi taps 9 students will compete for awards r.o.t.c unit to get plaque investigating group names committee to study athletic facilities to probe dramatic club no action was taken on the monopolistic activities of scabbard and blade honorary military soci ety and mustard and cheese dramatic society by omicron del ta kappa honorary senior activi ties society at the meeting wednes day night at chi psi the recom mendations made by the investiga ting committee regarding athletic managerships were rejected the report of the committee in vestigating the monopolies of the living groups in campus offices was accepted however and a commit tee was appointed to examine the athletic facilities of the university reject suggestion the investigation committee's recommendation that sophomores having the same living group affil iation as the incumbent of the managership be not permitted to compete for that managership was not accepted by the society but the committee was instructed to examine the present voting system for the election of managers and to recommend improvements the tabulation of living group affilia tions of managers assistant man agers and captains from 1930 to 1938 is printed in full on page 2 the committee's recommenda tion that freshman managers not be awarded their letters until the end of their period of service as managers was also rejected by the fraternity the committee was in structed to investigate the possibi lities of the setting up of a merit system to be used will de rive many benefits from the use of the newer auditorium said mc nabb he also added that the lib erty high school selection was made because the newer school affords a seating capacity for ap proximately 1600 people liberty's stage is equipped with modern electrical apparatus and has a pulley system by which the stage crews will be able to raise and lower sets onto the stage thus reducing monday at drill by h alan sny der ch e 39 vice president of scabbard and blade student hon orary military society joseph s leonard head of the department of military science and tactics will accept the plaque on behalf of the r o t c regiment major green who died in de cember 1937 was head of the de partment of military science and tactics for six years prior to his transfer to the panama canal zone in august 1937 as a captain of the 23rd infan try during the world war he was awarded the distinguished service cross for gallantry in action when his machine gun company had been practically wiped out he continued to push forward to his objective with only two enlisted men where he remained for 30 hours under artillery gas and machine gun fire was severely gassed the three retained the ground that his organization had gained until reinforcements arrived ma jor green was severely gassed in the encounter he was a member of the general staff eligible list in 1931 the major graduated orial plaque will be presented monday at drill by h alan sny der ch e 39 vice president of scabbard and blade student hon orary military society joseph s leonard head of the department of military science and tactics will accept the plaque on behalf of the r o t c regiment major green who died in de cember 1937 was head of the de partment of military science and tactics for six years prior to his transfer to the panama canal zone in august 1937 as a captain of the 23rd infan try during the world war he was awarded the distinguished service cross for gallantry in action when his machine gun company had been practically wiped out he continued to push forward to his objective with only two enlisted men where he remained for 30 hours under artillery gas and machine gun fire was severely gassed the three retained the ground that his organization had gained until reinforcements arrived ma jor green was severely gassed in the encounter he was a member of the general staff eligible list in 1931 the major graduated from command and general staff school and from the infantry school company officers course in 1923 six years later major green was graduated from the infantry school advance offi cers course at west point major green played varsity football in 1916 and 1917 before being appointed to west point his son james was a mem ber of the class of 1939 at lehigh invitations
