dignity good taste .. .' i congratulate those in charg2 of the house parties and the senior ball on the dignity and good taste which characterized these events but which did not diminish the genuine enjoy ment for those who partici pated nothing occursd in the way of motor accident or other mishap to prevent this colorful affair as it fades in retrospect from matching the pleasure that it afforded in anticipation c c williams president 17 on faculty will lecture pictured above is the quintet appearing here tomorrow in the chapel they are jerome rappaport piano mucha elzon violin gerald kunz viola george barrere flute and horace britt cello barrere - britt group to give concert here price — five cents 157 arts men select majors o'brien gets new position 4very well pleased . . . ' i was very well pleased with the fall house party week-end so far as i was able to observe all affairs were conducted in a gentlemanly manner as i would expect them to be and every one was having a thoroughly good time the reports from various fraternities and dormi tories indicate well-conducted parties i am glad to commend those in charge of the senior ball and those in charge of the dormitory and fraternity groups for their handling of dances and the entertainment of their lady guests wray h congdon dean of undergraduates biology courses lead in enrollment after 241 register a total of 157 students of the three upper classes in the college of arts and science have selected 23 different majors dean philip m palmer revealed yesterday af ternoon at a meeting of arts fac ulty members this figure does not include ten men who are still undecided on their major study or 64 freshmen total registration in the college of arts and science this year numbers 241 an increase of 21 over last year in registration by course majors biology leads with 32 history and government follow with 28 eng lish majors number 14 other reg istrations are accounting 4 bus iness 8 economics 2 finance 8 so cial institutions 1 bacteriology 3 zoology 1 chemistry 9 journalism 7 fine arts 3 geology 9 greek 3 industrial engineering 1 latin 2 mathematics 4 metallurgy 7 min ing 2 philosophy 2 physics 3 psy weekend blaring bands are hushed the sound of feminine voices is gone cheers no longer echo from tay lor stadium the campus is return ing to normal fall houseparty is over the affair ended sunday after noon with the departure of 646 girls who were guests of students since friday afternoon highlight of the weekend was the senior ball friday evening in the hotel bethlehem where 45 0 couples danced to the music of bunny ber igan who played in the dining room of the hotel and mai hal lett whose bandstand was located in the main ballroom starting at 10 o'clock the dance continued un til 3 a m with both bands alter nately sharing the spotlight dean and mrs wray h congdon dr and mrs claude g beardslee and mr and mrs george b curtis chaperoned president and mrs c c williams were also present has broken ankle playing on a stand in front of a large lehigh banner bunny ber igan accompanied his band with a trumpet during each number and was active despite a broken ankle which was in a cast according to berigan it was broken recently while helping children at his home jump rope jean dover and dick wharton sang with the band mai hallett devoted his efforts to waving his baton in a frenzied manner and focusing a spotlight on various members of his com pany especially in the light were buddy welcome who sang novel ty numbers and reigned supreme in the brass section and joe cab onaro who with his 300 pounds dwarfed the slap-bass he mal treated throughout the evening knutson opens program sponsored by office of admissions the faculty lecture series spon sored by the office of admissions and having a staff of 17 speakers was opened friday night by prof henry c knutson assistant pro fessor of electrical engineering who spoke on practical applica tions of the vacuum tube at the springfield high school pleasant valley the series of lectures which is available to high schools in the east has been started earlier this year because of its popularity in preceding seasons other lecturers who will speak are claude g beardlee professor of moral and religious philosophy life is an honor system and thinking is a contact sport robert d billinger assistant pro fessor of chemistry great indus tries from little test tubes and the chemistry of the air ward l bishop associate professor of economics sense and nonsense in current economic thought talks on medieval history sydney m brown professor of history the medieval schoolboy and medieval magic and sci ence earl l crum associate pro fessor of classical languages our mal hallet jam session holds attention of swing enthusiasts continued on page four sergeant made warrant officer to transfer to new york sergeant leo m o'brien assis tant in military science and tactics at lehigh since 1931 today was appointed to the position of war rant officer of the united states army he was raised from his pre vious position as a technical ser geant due to the appointment ser geant o'brien will be transferred as assistant to duty at the head quarters of the second corps area govenors island new york by december 1 until this time he will remain at lehigh on tempor ary duty sergeant o'brien will be re placed by sergeant william albert who is coming from fort meade maryland was business major albert majored in business at the southern business college vir ginia after which he took an ex tension course in business at wil liam and mary for one year in continued on page fou competitive plan evokes criticism of editor harold m selser competitions toße-open the competitive plan under which the epitome is operating for the first time was called a fail ure yesterday by harold m selser e e 39 editor in chief of the 1939 epitome who attributed the poor quality of recent epitomes to the small sum of money that has been allowed the editors ever since i entered lehigh j have been hearing stories about the epitome racket pi delt was going to do something about it the brown and white was going to do something about it the board of publications was going to do something about it and the re sult selser said is a plan that aroused such great enthusiasm among the sophomores that four of them reported for competition several weeks ago to satisfy some people around here who are always complaining this isn't the word selser used competition will be thrown open again next week when the final dummy has been prepared there will be enough work to keep them busy drops percentage basis the plan to which the yearbook editor was referring was that drawn up by pi delta epsilon honorary publications fraternity in the spring and later approved with minor revisions by the board of publications the plan gives the officers a fix ed honoraria instead of a percen tage of the profit additional pow ers to the faculty adviser in the election of officers provides for open competition supervised by the faculty adviser and requires all junior and senior officers to per form a certain share of the work instead of allowing the editor to do everything the new plan will not be in full operation until next year the fac ulty adviser selected by the board of publications to supervise the epitome is kenneth k kost in structor in journalism who is also one of the advisers to the brown and white selser admits that his dream yearbook is a 25,000 job produced at duke i would like to have one like that here he said but how am i going to do it on 5,0u0 that's the trouble around here and i'm not the first editor of the epitome to feel this way a fel low is elected editor in chief of the epitome he plans his book and wants to make a good job but he finds that he can't get the mon ey so he gets a bit disgusted at the book which he must publish plans record yearbook right now i have the dummy for the best yearbook said all of the poise that i might have now as a public speaker is due to my experience which i would not trade with any other scholastic activity o riley to address women sane living and a sense of humor will be the topic of a talk by dr edgar riley assistant pro fessor of english when he ad dresses the allentown woman's club today 5 musicians will present program in chapel tomorrow students admitted free selections by seven composers representing the development of music from the 17 th century to the present day will be played by the barrere-britt concertino tomor row evening at 8:15 o'clock in packer memorial chapel in the an nual concert sponsored by the cleaver foundation composed of five distinguished musicians the quintet will present a program of 21 different instru mental combinations from the works of handel beethoven tele mann jfierne rehozinski faute and fernandez-arbos dr t edgar shields director of music announced this morning that the program will open with concerto a quattro in d minor by handel a duet by georges barrere and horace britt playing the flute and cello respectively will feature beethoven's duo in b-fiat major platinum flute used the next two numbers will be sonata in d minor by telemann and sonata da camera by pierne jerome rappaport at the piano and britt at the cello will play the former while barrere joins them in the playing of the pierne number four selections from the musical repertoire of rohozinski will be presented by barrere playing the flute and gerald kunz playing the violin the program will conclude with two numbers in spanish style by fernandez-arbos with the en tire ensemble taking part one of the highlights of the pro gram will be several selections played by barrere the founder of this ensemble on a platinum flute valued at 3,000 he is the only flutist playing a platinum instru ment of the 30,000 professional flutists now in this nation all but five use an instrument of silver or some cheaper metal students admitted free the ensemble is composed of georges barrere flutist horace britt cellist mischa elzon viol inist gerald kunz violist and jerome rappaport pianist barrere received his musical training in france where he met the belgium - born britt elzon made his first public appearances in poland where he received the major part of his musical training while kunz and rappaport are student body yawns and faces coming mid - semester exams lehigh university brown and white curtis speaks in philadelphia talks o n shakespeare bacon controversy avoids opinions speaking before the hathaway shakespeare club friday in phila delphia registrar george b cur tis presented a brief discussion of the shakespeare-bacon controver sy certain little known phases of elizabethan history and a discus sion of what is alleged to be fran cis bacon's personal history and the code he is said to have written it in in presenting the shakespeare bacon question mr curtis avoided taking either side but merely gave in outline form a history of the controversy he also gave other existing theories as to the author ship of the plays these include the supposition that some other contemporary wrote them — the earl of oxford the earl of derby and the supposition that shakes peare the playwright was a diff erent man than shakespeare the actor all the available informa tion being about shakespeare the actor passing from the shakespeare mai hallet and his band blare forth in swingtime as houseparty guests decide list ening is better than dancing the scene is in the main ballroom of the hotel
