their first banquet last wednesday evening at the kurtz restaurant and the affair turned out to be the largest attend ed banquet ever held by a class at lehigh after several attempts on the part of the sophomore class to col lect the leaders of the yearlings and many small reprisals on the part of freshmen the freshmen gathered at the fair grounds in allentown where they had three large moving vans to bring them to bethlehem the trucks stopped in front of the kurtz building where the sopho more class was awaiting them be fore the freshmen could get off the trucks many of them were over powered and tied hand and foot ready to be loaded on a waiting truck under cover of the fighting about two-thirds of the freshmen were able to rush into the theatre entrance and thence to the banquet room despite the drizzling rain the sophomores tied up about fifty freshmen and loaded them on trucks taking them to the heller town cave the fighting was mark ed by its good sportsmanship no slugging was resorted to no one hurt and no windows were broken after the melee the sophomores gave cheers for both classes and then departed with their prisoners the banquet was held in the ban quet room of the kurtz restau rant with bob adams the president of the class acting as toastmaster the speakers were dr natt m emery prof bosey reiter ma jor j w lang prof h eckfeldt w r okeson a w hicks and coach hellertown returned having been released by the sophomores their entrance was welcomed by cheers for the men who kept the sophomores bilsy at the start made it possible for the majority of the class to be present at the beginning of the banquet playing on a wet field and under a sprinkling sky the brown and white batsmen easily defeated the set on hall nine in an abbreviated contest by the score of 8 to 2 the conflict only lasted four and a half sessions due on the most part to the fact that game had to be called in time for the visitors to catch a train but the rain halted the game long enough to make it late in start ing the game was rather loosely played because of the dampness of the field and the drizzling rain which fell during most of the con test coach keady tried out one of his new pitchers in this game and by all indications has found a strong addition to the mound staff dv bois a member of the freshman class made his initial appearance in the box at all times he had per fect control over the situation amd pitched clean ball for the entire game allowing only three hits and striking out seven men in the five innings he was particularly ef fective when the bases were occu pied and for two innings straight retired the side with nieni on the bases and no outs it is certain that keady is developing a good sup porter for lees in games to come after dußois had disposed of the enemy in the opening inning with ease the lehigh batsmen set in to make the way still easier by giving him a two-run margin to work on after donovan fanned adams bounced a hot single off the pitcher's glove and went on to sec ond when coll picked up the ball and made a wild heave to first base rowley grounded out to outwater adams trotting to third rogers hit a roller to coll and was out at first but o'neil dropped the ball adams scoring in the meantime larkin plowed a hot single down the third-base line which kenny threw over the first baseman's head rogers going to third and the second game of the three game series between lehigh and lafayette will be played on taylor field to-morrow afternoon at 3:15 o'clock both teams are confident of victory ; the advantage now rest ing with lafayette by virtue of their victory over the brown and white last saturday the records of both the teams was published in the brozvn and white under the date of may 12th it was suggested that records meant nothing when these two teams get together and such was the case a typical lehigh-lafayette strug gle and it was not until the last minutes that a victor emerged the easton express in its sport ing columns was not very enthusi astic about the lafayette victory this is what it had to say : — lafayette was lucky to win brute strength with the stick and lehigh's stupidity produced the vic tory six errors even for a col lege team is too many for one game adams was keady's best bet on the defense his wonderful catch es on brunner and gazella were peaches lehigh's two home-runs were the result of ground rules each fall ing into the center field football bleachers lees and donovan de livered the wallops these two players with adams represented 90 of lehigh's strength the injury of capt harry rote probably had a psychological effect on the rest of the team and most certainly weakened the infield timmy donovan's fielding and batting were revelations besides getting four singles out of five times at bat the la salle boy handled three chances perfectly rogers in right field saved what looked like clean hits on a few oc casions freddy got one hit a double continued on of a 6 to 5 score all laws of physics all formulae of mathematics all phases of psychol ogy were forgotten and led by professor drown the brown and white profs rose up in wrath and scored eight runs held the lafay ette profs scoreless in the ninth in ning and were declared the vic tors 13 to 6 the game was not a no-hit no run affair but it was real baseball the lehigh infield especially glent zer half of the battery was the head of the m s & t department major lang lang looked like a big league hurler striking out 11 continued on page four notice the university of pennsylvania lacrosse team with three league vic tory notches cut in their sticks in vade taylor field to-morrow after noon to tackle the lehigh stickmen the latter being the only obstacle in the championship path of the red and blue stevens and swarth more fell victims to the attack of the philadelphia collegians and last saturday perm scored its greatest triumph when it put the much heralded johns hopkins team out of the running for pennant laurels from a mediocre status in lacrosse circles pennsylvania has suddenly stepped into the front ranks and the outcome of their fracas with the brown and white team to morrow will result in either perm winning the championship of the southern division or tying for the honors the victory of the red and blue over hopkins by a 5 to 3 score was decisive and the lehigh stickmen will undoubtedly meet with greater opposition than has been offered by any southern division team this season a week previous to the 4 to 1 victory of the west point ca dets over lehigh the cadets had re ceived a 4 to 1 drubbing that was administered by the quaker city team so by comparative scores coach lattimer's pupils seem to have the edge on the brown and white with everything to gain they can be depended upon to play harder than any pennsylvania team has done in past years and to morrow's game should be a top notcher the off-day last saturday which resulted in the local stickmen drop ping the army game has not cast any dark clouds over the lehigh camp the lehigh-lafayette fac ulty ball game on monday prevent ed the holding of scrimmage and the afternoon was spent in rag ging the ball at the west end of the field tuesday coach bill o neil set the varsity attack against the defense and the squad staged one of the hottest and best scrim mages of the year showing that the ability his proteges exhibited in the navy game was still present the lehigh defense has proven its worth in every game this season and ranks among the best in the league but going its best in scrim mages during the week the attack managed to break through them and send a counter into the net the lehigh mentor will have his squad primed for the game and a victory will send perm towards the discard and place the brown and white a step higher on the champ ionship ladder the team will probably be chosen from the following men kutzleb hocker gonzales strauch enslin bush wilson brewer bradley tavener day abel muzdakis brumbaugh darsie w j morgan whitney h w morgan and voss as this is the last home game of the year an umisual crowd is an ticipated the officers for the ensuing year the nativity par ish house on sunday evening at 7 o'clock professor miller has trav elled extensively and his knowledge of the holy land and the orient should prove of interest to the mem bers of the class a cordial invita tion is extended to all students who are interested in this meeting the election of class officers for the coming year of the class of 23 will be held in drown hall on monday and tuesday afternoons from 3 to 5 o'clock the list of nominees for these posts were printed in a recent issue of the broivn and white and all juniors are urged to vote class doies must be paid in full in order to cast a ballot another strong opponent faces the lehigh tennis team when the racquet-wielders oppose the speedy michigan quartet on the university courts this afternoon this team like that of southern california is making a tour of the east and is engaging the best net teams in the college ranks lehigh is one of their early opponents so not much is known of their relative strength the one basis of comparison is their match with the californians in which the middle westerners came out on the short end of a 2 to 1 score this indicates that they are opponents to be feared as the western team took all three match es from the brown and white the lehigh team played faultlessly on wednesday against perm state and seem to have again regained their winning streak which was broken but once this season the line-up singles — no 1 captain beck no 2 beale ; no 3 koegler ; no 4 mattson doubles — first beck and koeg ler second beale and cluthe brown and white tonight bethlehem high
