contestants are runners ¦ up 75 is winner's award the junior-senior williams con test in extemporaneous speaking was won last evening in packard auditorium by eric weiss e e 39 second honors were divided between h l dudman bus 39 and r n larkin arts 38 weiss spoke on hizzoner my mayor and will receive the first prize of 75 the second prize of 25 will be divided between dud man and larkin who spoke on what is democracy and it's happening here respectively in the freshmen contests austin c wagner eng who spoke on american neutrality is possible will receive the first prize of 40 wiliam h auditorium is crowded to hear philadelphia columnist speak speaking on a chemist looks at advertising dr harvey a neville head of the chemistry de partment at lehigh university this morning declared that the fut ure of advertising depends upon the use of forceful truthful state ments just as the modern master pieces of fiction are to be found among the advertising pages of our magazines and newspapers said dr neville so the truly great in ventors of today are those master minds who think up new and ter rifying dangers diseases and de ficiences in order to supply alleged cures comforts and cathartics for them advertising formerly told peo ple where to get what they want ed now its admitted purpose is to create a demand and overcome sales resistance exaggeration and misstatements are by dr c c williams president of the university in greeting the con ference delegates from 114 high and preparatory schools this morn ing in packard auditorium a free and enlightened press probably stands at the top of all agencies of national security even above army and navy declared president williams the great dangers to our national security are not from foreign foes but from hidden germs of disintegra tion within just as the bacteria of physical disease quickly succumb to direct light of the sun so will those germs of moral decay group ani mosities and political corruption lose virulence in the light of pub lic opinion resulting from press publicity he continued broad understanding necessary dr williams cited broad under standing of civilization and current movements and a knowledge of writing techniques and public psychology as two prerequisites for participation in journalism i commend the purposes of those who seek adequately to prepare to serve society through na tional professional business frater nity during pledging exercises held in colloquium on wednesday morn ing the men pledged are jack w kromer franklyn f schafer leonard h dudman leo w hes selman thomas habicht charles a weed and payson h nicholas the pledging exercises were pre ceded by a talk on the history and purpose of alpha kappa psi given by george b curtis registrar who was introduced university will repave roads on campus andrew w litzenberger super intendent of buildings and grounds announced yesterday that sever al of the campus roads will be re surfaced within the next ten days the road to the new annex of the chemistry building will be paved the main road through sayre park will be re-surfaced one half at a time from the sharp turn near the psi upsilon frater nity house to west of the turn near the chi psi house the road leading from the main sayre park road to the theta del ta chi fraternity will also be re surfaced on the lower campus the main road from the flag pole place for third consecutive year fifty-eight publications repre senting the same number of high and preparatory schools of penn sylvania and new jersey were sel ected by three practicing news papermen as noteworthy achieve ments in scholastic journalism in the contests run in connection with the conference five pennsylvania and new jer sey schools received first place awards in the contests the results of the contests in the ten classes were announced at the closing ses sion of the conference this after noon in addition to the ten first place plaques ten second place plaques and 38 certificates of merit were awarded a total of 227 high and preparatory schools in the two states were represented in the con tests ye ridlyan of ridley park taking first place in the contests of the class c magazines marred the four-year winning streak of the glen-nor crier of glen nor high school glenolden the glen-nor crier had taken first place in this classification since the conferences were begun in 1934 palmer announces winners three publications won first place for the third consecutive year in addition to the william perm charter school recipient of a merit certificate last spring
