economic education neil carothers dean of the col lege of business administration has written two articles reentry one of these where are we now appearing in the sunday issue of this week magazine section of the new york herald tribune attacked the present ad ministration's methods of restoring prosperity the other article business de fends itself appears in the may issue of banking magazine it discusses the possibilities of public education in economic questions by radio in where are we now dean carothers explained why our eco nomic machine is still broken down after many years of cur rency juggling public spending and regimentation recovery never runs smooth in the first place stated dr carothers " the course of recovery like true love never runs smooth it is an erratic course with re lapses and setbacks a minor re cession from the rapid recovery of 1936 would not have been un natural but this is not a tempor ary setback it is deeper than that the truth is that the normal irregularity of recovery the un stable foreign situation and the minor excesses of recovery will not explain the breakdown of the entire economic machine the ex planation is to be found in the injury done our economic system by years of waste restriction reg imentation and class legislation declared dr carothers in the field of labor we have had ihe spectatcle of government en couraging and assisting a minority of workers to pull down the temple of industry he said there are two unsound doctrines held by govern ment and labor one is the theory that every wage increase helps the workers encourages consumption and increases consumer power the other is the theory that de creasing hours increases employ ment both have been tried and proven wrong industry hurt by labor strife relentless taxation destructive labor strife uneconomic increases in labor cost a huge weight of unemployed restricted production chaotic credit and currency wast ed resources all these have been too much for industry finally there percolated through our en tire thinking population the real ization that this nation offered no opportunity for investment or re turn for enterprise the springs of investment dried up explained dr carothers in business defends itself dr carothers discussed whether it is possible to improve the general understanding of economics by the people through radio talks john t economic education neil carothers dean of the col lege of business administration has written two articles reentry one of these where are we now appearing in the sunday issue of this week magazine section of the new york herald tribune attacked the present ad ministration's methods of restoring prosperity the other article business de fends itself appears in the may issue of banking magazine it discusses the possibilities of public education in economic questions by radio in where are we now dean carothers explained why our eco nomic machine is still broken down after many years of cur rency juggling public spending and regimentation recovery never runs smooth in the first place stated dr carothers " the course of recovery like true love never runs smooth it is an erratic course with re lapses and setbacks a minor re cession from the rapid recovery of 1936 would not have been un natural but this is not a tempor ary setback it is deeper than that the truth is that the normal irregularity of recovery the un stable foreign situation and the minor excesses of recovery will not explain the breakdown of the entire economic machine the ex planation is to be found in the injury done our economic system by years of waste restriction reg imentation and class legislation declared dr carothers in the field of labor we have had ihe spectatcle of government en couraging and assisting a minority of workers to pull down the temple of industry he said there are two unsound doctrines held by govern ment and labor one is the theory that every wage increase helps the workers encourages consumption and increases consumer power the other is the theory that de creasing hours increases employ ment both have been tried and proven wrong industry hurt by labor strife relentless taxation destructive labor strife uneconomic increases in labor cost a huge weight of unemployed restricted production chaotic credit and currency wast ed resources all these have been too much for industry finally there percolated through our en tire thinking population the real ization that this nation offered no opportunity for investment or re turn for enterprise the springs of investment dried up explained dr carothers in business defends itself dr carothers discussed whether it is possible to improve the general understanding of economics by the people through radio talks john t
