stevens ch e 39 b and w business manager first semester after hearing mcconn and ullman speak they vote again to hold chapel service had previously decided to have exercises in taylor field reversing its previous action after hearing speeches by dean c m mcconn and dr harry ull mann director of the curriculum in chemical engineering and chair man of the faculty education com mittee the class of 1938 voted 57 32 yesterday afternoon in packard auditorium in favor of holding the commencement exercises in the chapel the class had previously voted to hold the graduation on monday evening june 13 in taylor stad ium but after learning that the faculty administration and trus tees favored indoor exercises the class vote favored the chapel site with the date set as tuesday morning june 14 by a vote of 50-14 the class adopted the insurance gift plan by which the class will present 35,000 to the university in 1958 the treasury of the class will be used as a reserve fund in case an emergency arises in the admin istration of this fund professor writes against u s plan grant cox and schoen are chosen leaders of upper classes over 50 per cent vote arcadia was retained as the name of the new student govern ing body consisting of the old ar cadia and the lehigh union last tuesday in drown hall at the class elections franc h burnett i e 39 was chosen head of the new organiza tion by a 50 percent majority the office of senior class pres ident was won by alan s grant i e who led his nearest oppon ent by 26 votes nearly 54 percent of the stu dent body voted as 911 ballots poured in george e hurst bus was chosen secretary treasurer of the class of 39 the class of 40 elected alfred t cox c e president and har old j masem arts as secretary treasurer cox led the voting by 90 ballots freshmen elect schoen the freshmen elected donald r schoen arts for next year's pres idency and augustus a riemon dy eng for the position of sec retary-treasurer schoen's nearest opponent was 104 votes away from election the dormitory and town groups elected george a albrecht bus 39 and henry t heckman arts 39 respectively as representatives to arcadia arcadia as the name of the new student body was chosen by 286 votes out of a total of 750 the next three in order of their pop ularity were arcadia union stu dent council and union one vote was discovered for utopia malcolm carrington jr bradford labelling the government's pump-priming plan as unsound frederick a bradford professor of economics and head of the de partment of finance writes in the united states news states that if fundamental conditions are satis factory business will recover with out this stimulus there are certain conditions when a moderate amount of pump-priming might be econom ically sound and desirable wrote dr bradford however the pres ent government plan is highly un sound and dangerous the goal has already been tried once with re sultant failure dr bradford in his article said that if pump-priming is used the public debt thereby created should be returned as soon as the im provement in private business per mits the failures that resulted when this plan was previously tried were
