the pigeon to be given on may 20th and june 12th the pigeon written by john galsworthy is a fantasy in three acts and will be the second play given by the club this year the first performance of the play will be given on may 20th and the second on the evening of class day june 12th tickets are now on sale and may be obtained from n r guthrie g e potts and r r hauser seats in the reserved sec tion will be 1.00 while general ad mission seats will be fifty cents it is hoped that everyone will buy their tickets as soon as possi ble as it is desirable to finish pay ment for the stage which was re cently enlarged the cast for the play is as fol continued on page three pi delta epsilon elects new members the lehigh tennis team contin ued on its winning streak last wed nesday afternoon by defeating the strong syracuse team by a score of 4 to 2 this victory makes the seventh win of the season out of nine matches p»layed the other two matches with perm and car negie tech were tied captain beck maintained his en viable record of not having lost a set this season by defeating cham plain of syracuse in straight sets 6-2 6-4 champlain showed some very good form but was un able to hold the smashing drives of the birown and white captain in the third singles edwards of syracuse defeated koegler 6-3 2-6 6-3 the fourth singles was won by mattson of lehigh who made his first appearance on the beale won the first set of his match by 6 to 3 but milton his opponent defeated him in the next two sets 6-1 6-2 beale was rather wild in the most critical mo ments of the game while easton the first of the three game series between lehigh and lafayette will be played the cry means more this year than it has for many years for this year the brown and white is represented by real ball players the lehigh team looks better and has been pulling together better than any during the past few years back and there is an air of confidence pervading the campus that this is lehigh's year to trim lafayette the lehigh team has been win ning some real balll games set backs were administered by prince ton and syracuse while fordham vermont villanova union col gate trinity and n y u were now if you want one lehigh's lacrosse team meets a new opponent to i morrow afternoon when it faces off against the team of the united states military acad emy at west point in the third non league game of the lehigh schedule this is the initial clash between the soldier stickmen and the brown and white ; the cadets never before hav ing drawn a place on the latter's schedule and the outcome of the game is being watched with inter est by army and lehigh adherents tal hunter coach of the le high squad in 1919 has been super intending the coaching of the west pointers and has developed a for midable aggregation that should make the local collegians extend themselves to the limit although losing to university of pennsylva nia last saturday by a scant margin the work of the soldiers was repu ted to be off color so little can be foretold by an analysis of com parative scores the lehigh stick wielders will undoubtedly find themselves up against twelve men that are in the prime of condition and ready to force fast and hard play exceptionally good weather con ditions this week have been a de cided asset for tuning up the le high squad for to-morrow's game and without exception the varsity twelve is in better condition than at any time this season the in jury johnny muzdakis received in the stevens tech game last sat urday has not hindered the work of lehigh's stocky in-home man in continued on page four sword and crescent tap day on may 20 new brunswick fans were treat ed to nine innings of spectacular baseball last wednesday afternoon when the scarlet nine defeated le high on the rutgers field by the score of 7 to 5 the whole affair was a slug-fest from start to finish the hits including threg home-runs four triples and two doubles with eye toward the lafayette game to be played to-morrow coach keady reserved the ace of the pitching squad johnny lees and started the game with bob adams on the mound adams re mained for 32/z3 2 z innings and then he was taken out and lees was sent in to try and repair the ha^voc wrought while the freshman twirl er held the mound the change was made too late however for with the lead ac quired and in spite of hard hitting by the lehigh men rutgers main tained her lead continued on page three while lehigh was out-hit two of the three circuit-clouts were count ed by the bethlehem collegians in the opening inning w t ith two down and no one on the bases freddy rogers tallied one for a round of the bases johnny lees duplica ted this performance in the eighth but again with no one on base he being the first man up rutgers counted her first runs on a homer when in the opening inning platt banged out the ball after bering house had tripled beringhouse and kelly each had a pair of triples the former also making two singles hitting safely in each of his four trips to the plate donnan and ri ley each tallied a double the rutgers men had absolutely no mercy on adams during the opening innings starting with a rally in the opening frame and scoring two runs after two men were out during this inning ad ams allowed four hits for a total of ten bases which included a single double triple and home-run rut gers added another run in the sec ond when kelly tripled and scored on duffy's single in the third adams steadied down and with one out after ber inghouse singled and was nabbed on an attempted steal bob sent the next two men away from the plate however a fusilade of hits in the fourth including a single by maloney and a second triple by kelley drove adams from the notice the final trials to decide the men who will represent lehigh in the middle atlantic states intercollegi ate association track and field meet on friday and saturday were held wednesday afternoon the middle states meet is held under the direction of franklin and mar shall college at lancaster pa this year the college competition will in clude entries from sixteen colleges and universities ; among the more prominent of which are rutgers w and j johns hopkins lehigh swarthmore lafayette franklin and marshall and dickinson the brown and white aggrega tion will have many stiff proposi tions to buck up against in the meet as there is some keen competition among the various college entries some of the best track and field athletes in the country will be on hand friday and saturday to battle for their respective organizations rutgers won the meet last year by scoring 29 points lafayette drew a second place with 22 points and delaware state came in third of the men who will represent lehigh at lancaster this week end captain bray cook and sieg mund probably stand the best chance of showing up well in their respective events captain bray's chances in the mile-run are better ed by the fact that v booth for merly of delaware state and an ex ceptionally fast man will not be eligible to compete booth is now at johns hopkins but he will not be able to enter in the sports fri day and saturday siegmund lehigh's best bet in the two-mile run is expected to push powell of rutgers powell is a good man in this event and the fans are expecting him to come tnrough with this race the trials in every event but the mile and two-mile will be held on friday the meet friday after noon will start at 3 o'clock stan dard time saturday afternoon the finals will begin at 2 o'clock sharp standard time lehigh's entries in the various events are as follows : — track entries 100-yard dash — talmadge and wight 220-yard dash — talmadge and wight . 440-yard run springsteen and burgess 880-yard run — cook and mc pherson mile run — captain bray two-mile run — siegmund field entries pole vault — harms van nort discus — roth shot put — roth buechley high jump — buechley the lehigh tennis team starts its second and final long trip away to day going to washington d c and playing matches with george washington university in wash ington and the naval academy at annapolis these are the last two matches away with the exception of the two comparatively local match es with lafayette and muhlenberg george washington will be play ed this afternoon while the navy will be played to-morrow little trouble is expected by the team from george washington as they have practically a new team this year and have not showed up very well in their matches so far navy has a fairly well-balanced team but it is not considered to be in the same class as some of the teams as syracuse perm and carnegie tech which the brown and white rec queters have already tied or defeat ed although neither of these teams can be considered snaps the lehigh team is fairly certain of chalking up two more victories in their thus far undefeated path when the tennis team returns home next week it will be con fronted by by far the hardest part of its schedule on monday afternoon they will play the university of california who are on a long ex tended eastern trip and are consid ered to be one of the best tennis teams of the west the following saturday the brown and 1 white men stack up against the strong perm state team who have had a very successful season so far this lehigh faculty to face lafayette nine the annual banquet of the uni versity band will be held at the ho tel allen in allentown on saturday evening the banquet will start at 7 o'clock standard time all members of the band are urged to be present as a very good program has been arranged the sword and crescent society held a very important meeting at the delta phi fraternity house last monday evening at which time fif teen juniors who are considered to be the most prominent in the class were elected to membership for the past three meetings the society has devoted its time mainly to the selection of new members the en tire junior class roll was gone over and each man was considered for his merits and his benefit to lehigh without any regard for personal feeling tap day at which time these men are notified of their election will be held this year on may 20th which is a big day in lehigh sports on this day lehigh will meet la fayette in baseball perm in lacrosse and swarthmore in tennis it is requested that every junior be pres ent at these games in order that all the elected men may be tapped it has been announced that any man who has been elected and is absent without a legitimate excuse will not be taken into the club the time for the tapping will be between the halves of the lehigh-penn lacrosse game the next meeting of the sword and crescent society will be next monday evening at 7 o'clock at the sigma phi house pi delta epsilon the honorary journalistic fraternity held an im portant meeting in drown hall last tuesday evening four new men were initiated at this meeting while seven new members were elected the election of considered all of the men available for membership to the fraternity the fraternity is an honorary journalistic fraternity and only considers men for membership who have done good work over a period recent issue of the brown and white by the edi tor the 1923 epitome will not be out before college closes this year the reasons for this are several and were well explained by the editor in his communication the board is now confronted by the proposi tion of disposing of the books that are to be printed the fact that the book will come out at a later date means more expense and far that reason the board plans only to print those books that are actu ally wanted by the student body e h snyder business manager has received applications from 363 students who wish to purchase books of this number a good percentage have paid the required deposit in order to have the book held for them in this list however there are a number who have not paid any deposit and if these stu dents desire a book to be printed and held for them it is necessary that they get in touch with the business manager at once and give him a deposit of one dollar or more aside from this group of stu dents who have already seen mr snyder there are a number of oth ers who want the book but have not made the fact known it is up to those students to communicate with the business manager at once giving him a deposit and making it duly certain that they will receive the book this information is for the benefit of the students and it is hoped that all those who really want a book will see mr snyder before may 20th the business manager has sent out bills for space in the 1923 epitome to aid of the fraternities and to some of the clubs because of the present financial condition of the year book it is desired that as many of these groups pay up as possible and as soon as possible the home game of the faculty baseball series with the lafayette faculty will be held on taylor field on monday afternoon at 4 o'clock the student body should make it a point to attend this game as the home team will need and appreciate the support of the students the three upper classes know how in teresting these games have always
