to the brown and white observance of the sesqui centennial of pennsylvania's ratification of the constitution of the united states no delegation played a more significant role in that able assemblage than that from this commonwealth these men contributed much of the far-seeing wisdom which solved the problem of the future organization of the re public in such fashion as to guarantee stabil ity and permanence immediately following the publication of the proposed frame of government pennsylvania took vigorous steps for approval through the energy of its leaders this commonwealth be came the second state to ratify the instrument and the first of the large states to approve consequently it is singularly appropriate that the commonwealth of pennsylvania the keystone state be as fervent and declines part in merger a committee to investigate the possibilities of an outdoor com mencement site was named last night by omicron delta kappa senior honorary fraternity at a dinner meeting at the delta tau delta fraternity house the fraternity also appointed a committee to draw up a new set of freshman regulations as out lined in recent issues of the brown and white and rescinded its ac tion accepting the invitation to serve as a slate committee in the proposed arcadia-lehigh union merger the committee for the outdoor commencement site consists of harry c milbank i e 38 pres ident of the senior class chairman melvin s lord ch e 38 and charles f zell bus 38 by moving the commencement from the chapel to some outdoor site such as the stadium or ar boretum milbank stated a larg er audience can be accomodated which will increase the number of tickets permitted to each grad uate murphy to head group the committee on freshman reg ulations consists of j palmer murphy arts 38 chairman rob ert v henning i e 38 and wil liam g dukek chem 38 both of these committees will report at the january meeting of the fraternity dukek vice presi dent of omicron delta kappa who presided at the meeting stated in regard to the rescinding of the invitation to serve as a slate com mittee omicron delta kappa while in sympathy with the proposal and grateful for the confidence ex pressed by ratification faculty comniittee aids to use 566 lbs of paper in 3400 copy edition 135 compose staff by j palmer murphy editor in chief lehigh university today joins in the nationwide celebration of the sesqui-centennial of the united states constitution marking especially the 150 th anniversary of the ratification by the commonwealth of pennsyl vania the brown and white has responded to a request by presi dent clement c williams that the publication represent the univer sity in commemorating the sesqui centennial the celebration throughout the country started in september and will extend over a six month's per iod as far as is known the brown and white is the only college pub lication in the country issuing a special edition for the event faculty assists aiding the paper in getting out the special issue has been the fac ulty committee on the sesqui-cen tennial celebration consisting of dr george d harmon associate professor of american history chairman dr frederick a brad ford head of the department of finance and milton c stuart pro fessor of mechanical engineering and representative sol bloom's congressional committee on the subject this is the second largest issue ever published by the brown and white in its 44 years of existence the largest issue 24 pages was published jan 19 1934 to mark the 40th anniversary of the pub lication the number of copies of this edition printed totals 3,400 five hundred and sixty-six pounds of newspaper were used in its com position if all the pages of all the copies were laid end to end lengthwise they would stretch 110.1 miles or from here to phila delphia and back nine members of the faculty and more than 125 students worked on the issue which has been entire ly student-edited the faculty committee has is sued the following statement more than 160 years ago our forefathers declared them selves to be a free and inde pendent nation — conceived in liberty and dedicated to the principle of democracy after seven years of fighting the revolutionary heroes succeed ed in obtaining from eng land the recognition of the new nation and secured what they considered an advantag eous treaty meanwhile in march 1781 the articles of confederation had been ratified by the 13 state with independence achieved and a constitutional government in operation the optimism of the nation was soon dimmed by stern realities — pessimism seized the land the government under the articles proved to be a league of sovereign and independent states wholly inadequate to meet the needs of the new nation the attempts made to arcadia student governing body appropriated 100 to the swim ming team for its southern train ing trip during the christmas vacation and 50 to the photog raphy society for equipment at a meeting last night in drown hall a committee to recommend changes in the freshman regul ations was also anmed by pres ident james bergen ch e 38 with alfred v bodine eng 40 as chairman two additional mem bers will be named later the changes which were pro posed in a recent editorial in the brown and white and which will be discussed by the arcadians at their next meeting are would allow smoking freshmen will be grace wife of the president of the board of trustees and mrs carter collins president of the ladies auxiliary and wife of major collins assistant profes sor of military science addressed cyanide honorary junior society wednesday evening at a dinner meeting at the delta upsilon fra ternity mrs grace and mrs collins dis cussed the problems of social up lift in bethlehem appealing to cyanide members to aid in this work the ladies auxiliary is trying at present to establish a method to interest the officials of major industrial concerns in the vicinity in offering advantages to the children of the employees discuss sponsorship the specific endeavor offered to the society was in connection with the bethlehem boy's club the plan to sponsor several groups of young boys and supervise in a manner similar to the big brother plan was discussed by the 15 members present and a start in the work was made the members are planning to bring these boys to athletic events at lehigh and gradually widen the sphere of influence of cyanide until it acts in a completely super visory capacity over a group of 75 boys club members senior ballots should be filed by wednesday dance to 41 was still unconscious late last evening as a result of injuries re ceived last friday when his car collided with another car driven by henry goldstein of long is land n y his condition how ever was
