guests of le high students for these three high geared days of activity for this weekend of this and that students playing host will spend a total of 24,037.20 ex cluding the value of manual labor put forth by the numerous gentle men in small brown hats appetites must be satisfied and satisfied they will be to the tune of 4,752 the number of cars driven by students will increase 50 per cent and gas station operators will beam when gasoline and wear and tear to cover the average of 40 miles per car brings another 1,767.50 from the pockets of le high men where from where do they come from and where do they go pennsylvania surrenders 219 new jersey 165 and new york 118 to lead the list the remainder come from states as far west as texas with wisconsin and minnesota supply ing our northern lassies and flor ida our southern belles tennessee missouri and indi ana will each send one represen tative oklahoma and illinois are offering three guests each with west virginia adding four others michigan's five the district of columbia's six ohio's seven and virginia's eight will all come un der lehigh's sphere of influence this evening there will be 23 new englanders and 13 from mary land tonight sammy will 23 house dorm dances football game to be among activities a record-breaking crowd of 792 girls began arriving at lehigh this afternoon for the eighteenth an nual fall houseparty they will accompany at least that many lehigh men in dancing to the music of sammy kaye to night he will start playing for the senior ball at 10 o'clock in the coliseum tomorrow's activities will in clude the football game between lehigh and gettysburg the maen nerchor tea dance and formal dances by fraternities and the dormitory groups the football game is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p m and the tea dance will get under way im mediately after the game twenty three of the fraternity dances will be held in the chapter houses five fraternities will dance at the hotel while the dormitory dance will be held in drown hall coliseum refinished sammy kaye will play in a re finished and lavishly decorated coliseum kaye's orchestra is an all-man outfit and features tommy ryan and jimmy brown as sol oists he comes to lehigh before trav elling to .! cleveland for a long engagement at present he is on an eastern tour which follows his summer's stay at jenkinson's pav illion in point pleasant n j outstanding among the im provements on the coliseum are the new flooring and ventilation the prom committee under the leadership of robert henning 1 e 38 has also made plans for a more efficient amplifying system decorations will be blue and white a soft drink stand will be located near the dance floor each fraternity will have a booth with furnishings from the respective chapter houses dormitory groups will use furniture from drown hall for their booths groups to hold dances formal dances tomorrow even ing sponsored by the dormitories and all but one of the fraternities will round held wednesday evening oct 27 at drown hall for all men eligible for election john cooney e e 38 presi dent of tau beta pi presented a short report of his trip to the nat ional convention of the fraternity held at the university of texas austin texas is utilized to the fullest by the two a few short hours later the stude must don his party suit the chap in the center models the clothing the lehigh impressions the houseparty issue of the le high review which came out thursday features two articles both written by ladies who have attended lehigh houseparties mrs mary heller who has been a houseparty date for the past three years wrote her impressions of house parties here according to her article she had too much of lehigh because she married the graduate of another school another article written by mrs ruth g kissel a former chaper one tells of the trials of being a chaperone at one of the lehigh parties young writes of china an article by shang-shoa young graduate student from china showed the chinese attitude on the present chino-nippon clash mr young remarked that for the first time in a long while the chinese people were putting up a strenuous objection against mar auding powers in their country the article coeds at lehigh was written by louis c stoumen arts 39 and grew out of a state ment by dean c m mcconn who favors co-education over the form of education such as we have at lehigh jim nolan arts 40 an out board motor boat owner wrote a story on his experiences as an out board racer at the present time nolan is trying to get a move ment started to have lehigh rep resented in the inter-collegiate motor boat races architects to be present lord bergen and hopkins will briefly address student gathering ground breaking for the first unit of the proposed dormitory system will take place at 1:30 p m tomorrow when president c c williams lifts the first spade ful of earth the unit is to be ready for occupancy by the open ing of school in september 1938 ceremonies will include speeches by dr williams and the presi dents of the lehigh union ar cadia and the interfraternity council the band will meet at the armory and march to the new dormitory location walter r okeson secretary-treasurer of the board of trustees and andrew w litzenberger superintendent of grounds will also be on hand to aid in the festivities builders will attend the university architects the firm of visscher and burley of new york will be represented by james l burley earl hoover of the s l hoover sons con struction company now complet ing the new addition to the chem istry building will be present melvin s lord ch e 38 president of lehigh union will briefly introduce the speakers who will be president williams james t bergen ch e 38 president of arcadia and joseph hopkins bus 38 president of the inter fraternity council president williams in announc ing the dedication declared i think it very appropriate that some formal event be had to inaugur ate the beginning of the new dorm itory system to be of gothic style the new dormitory will be sit uated about 200 feet south of the armory on the slope of south mountain it will be slightly east of the delta tau delta fraternity house at taylor and getz streets the building will be constructed along english collegiate gothic lines and as the newer buildings on the campus will be of native stone with limestone trimming each of the four floors will con tain student quarters while in ad dition the main floor will have two reception rooms a lounge a din ing room and kitchen and storage facilities architects plans show this building to be the center of four proposed dormitory units plans call for the erection of similar buildings both to the front and rear of this initial one a 10 per cent increase in public speaking enrollment has resulted in an expansion of lehigh's speech program for the coming year an nounced j calvin callaghan in structor of debating yesterday included in the program will be a course in business speaking an extensive intramural speech contest and an enlarged inter collegiate debating schedule offer 200 in prizes according to callaghan the in tramural debating is offered to give any student opportunity to get experience in speaking prizes totalling 200 will be offered to the winning intramural teams all intercollegiate debates this year will be given over the radio before dinner groups and high school assmblies among the topics slated for the intercollegiate team will be resolved that the nat ional labor relations board should be empowered to enforce arbi tration of all industrial disputes and resolved that the pennsyl vania legislature should be em powered to levy a graduated in come tax intramural topics will be selected by the various teams representing the different colleges of the university convict 7 frosh soph vigilantes levy odd punishments seven subdued freshmen were tried and convicted ol breaking freshman regulations at a meeting of the vigilante committee wed nesday evening two of these so-called wise guys who were discovered with out their black socks wanted to know if they had to wear pink underwear too they don't have to wear lingerie but they do have to wear underwear outside their pants another freshman who was found without his black socks has to wear his socks and garters out side of his pants then we have the absent-minded freshman who forgot his dink who now has to wear a football helmet with a red ribbon tied on it to help him remember not to for get perhaps the most unusual of all the punishments was meted out to the frosh that was caught with out his handbook he has to carry around the largest volume to be found in the library which is a mining engineering book of no mean proportions all of these punishments were imposed for one week mohr barnard dorby given other offices second ballot cast william boyer i e was elected president of the freshman class on a second ballot at a meeting of the freshman representatives held wednesday evening in drown hall other officers chosen from the cabinet are luther mohr met e vice president william barnard i e secretary and alexander darby i e treasurer the three remaining cabinet members joseph schroeder i e jack whiting bus and john taylor i e will be appointed to various offices by the presi dent 2 ballotings necessary because of a misunderstanding in the casting of the first votes the cabinet decided to hold a re vote it was the result of this second balloting that made boyer president the new union head attended germantown friends school in philadelphia and mercersburg academy while at these schools he received letters in basketball football track and baseball he was captain of basketball and track a glimpse into the other side of any lehigh houseparty — the side which is seldom shown chinese colleges appeal to lehigh pres williams asked to arouse u s opinion a message received by president c c williams yesterday from the associated boards for christian colleges in china contained a plea for universities in the united states to use their offices to arouse public opinion to end japanese aggression against china included in the letter was a tele gram from banking dated oct 13 and addressed to chinese am bassador wang in washington the japanese it stated are rendering millions of innocent farmers and industrial workers homeless and without means of livelihood destroying some of our greatest educational institutions making it impossible for millions of our children to attend school and causing untold suffering and distress on all sides lehigh has always been sym pathetic toward china said dr williams and many of our al umni are chinese the president cited the example of t c yen 01 whose present position in china is that of director and min ister of railroads the associated boards for christian colleges is affiliated with seven universities and four colleges in all
