william j robbins doctor of science tickets for tonight's perform ance by blanche yurka in the broughal high school auditor ium are found in the back of every athletic book students and faculty with these tickets will be admitted from 7:30 till 8:15 p m general admission tickets at 1 apiece for the public will not go on sale till 7:50 p m students bringing guests may be admitted prior to this time however the front entrances to broug hal high school will be used exclusively no one will be ad mitted after 8:15 p m under any circumstances 3 lehigh men attend session by william dukek an accepted fact of the theatre is that the star makes the box office appeal and the cast makes or breaks the play it is this latter group of feature players that never gets the head lines rarely wins the critics ac claim yet consistently upholds the tradition of dramatic ability to that group belongs blanche yurka who returns to lehigh to night to open the second student concert-lecture series her pro gram will be presented at 8 15 p m in broughal high school audi torium the new arc of the theatre her program this evening well symbolizes miss yurka herself whose dramatic roles form a wide and varied cross-section of the american theatre famous for her initial movie appearance as madame defarge in the tale of two cities miss yurka has played the role of jul iet's nurse in romeo and juliet a major role in lysistrata a production she attempted in vain to sell to new york producers for seven years and which became a broadway hit parts in sophocles electra bart's the squall both outstanding hits and a host of other plays gets first chance her present role of one-woman theatre is a well-deserved one for she has an amazingly exten sive repetoire her career began in minnesota where the child of czech parents she began earnest study of music in new york she deserted the concert stage for the theatre getting her first break when she penetrated the numerous secretaries guarding the sanctum sanctorum of the great david bel asco who recognizing her talents took her on as general under continued on page four the fourth annual engineers ball sponsored by pi tau sigma and eta kappa nu mechanical and electrical engineering honor aries will be held tomorrow even ing in drown hall following the lehigh-john hopkins football game it will be the first univer sity dance of the new school year phillip j welch m e 38 and john cooney e e 38 presidents of the two sponsoring fraternities have announced that piff moore and his band have been signed for the affair the band has played at houseparty dances during the past few years in addition to dancing four sen iors and ten juniors will be pledged by the two honoraries dur ing the dance entertainment will include a demonstration of me chanical tricks and devices by members of the mechanical and electrical engineering groups to furnish lounge according to an announcement by john h weigel i e 38 in charge of publicity the proceeds will go toward paying for the furnishings of the lounge in pack ard laboratory tickets will sell at 1.10 a cople or 85 cents stag and can be pur shased in the office of the lehigh union or fine arts addres sed the members of phi eta sigma national freshman honorary soci ety at the meeting last night in packard laboratory professor howland discussed modern art in his illustrated lecture a short business meeting fol lowed professor howland's dis cussion new members were pro posed the members were urged to contact other university organi zations in reference to charters suitable for hanging in drown hall and a program committee was appointed the speaker illustrated the com plete circuit of art showing that modern art is returning to the old er forms in basic idea modern architecture surrealism and cub ism were mentioned photo by blank-stoller ervin g bailey doctor of engineering debaters select topics to discuss during coin ing season joseph c callaghan instructor in english and coach of the de bating team daniel q marshall m e 38 president of delta omi cron theta honorary debating soc iety and douglas w edwards arts 38 were lehigh's represen tatives at the annual meeting of the debating association of penn sylvania colleges held saturday in harrisburg the meeting which was held to select subjects for the coming de bating season was attended by representatives of 32 colleges 3 questions chosen the three questions to be debated are 1 resolved that the nat ional labor relations board should be empowered to enforce arbitra tion of all labor disputes 2 re solved that secretary hull's pol icy of reciprocal trade agreements should be extended to include the principal nations of the world 3 resolved that the pennsyl vania legislature should be em powered to levy a graduate income tax o physics society given picnic by c c bidwell prof c c bidwell head of the physics deparment will play host to the physics society at a picnic on sunday afternoon at his farm in springton the group will leave the physics building at 3 p m the officers all engineering phy sicists elected for the coming year are vincent acri 38 president albert ogden 38 vice president joseph mathews jr 40 secre tary-treasurer william wrigley 40 sophomore representative and frederick scott instructor in phy sics faculty adviser sophomore back sustains broken cheek bone lester rosenf eld a reserve half back on lehigh's eleven was bad ly injured in the fourth quarter of the founder's day freshman sophomore football battle rosenfeld who started for the sophomores was tackled by two men after a five-yard gain he was kicked on the right side of the face and was helped from the field a complete examination at the st luke's hospital revealed a fractured cheek bone a badly bruised eye and a battered nose rosenfeld will spend several days at the hospital for further treat ment the injury puts a crimp in the progress shown by rosenfeld in recent scrimmages he has been attracting the eyes of the coaches by his running and passing abil ities september 1938 marked for opening of first of 4 sections to accomodateover 138 the board of trustees on wed nesday authorized its buildings and grounds committee to let a contract for the construction of the first of four dormitory units the board met following the 59th founder's day exercises the unit will be of native stone construction four floors in height and will be placed on the campus side of getz st and parallel to this street it is planned to ac commodate 138 students and sev eral tutorial fellows who will serve as proctors the building is expected to be ready for occupancy with the opening of school in september 1938 ground is expected to be broken later this month and it is hoped to have the excavation work completed before freezing weather sets in total cost of the first unit in cluding grading landscaping fur nishing and architects fees is ex pected to be less than 250,000 to use native stone architecture of the dormitory unit will be along english col legiate gothic lines and will be in harmony with other buildings recently erected on the campus as in the other recent buildings native stone with limestone trim will be used each floor of the unit will con tain rooms for students there will be entrances to the dormitory on the four sides of the building which will be 236 feet by 42 feet the main entrance will be toward the campus on the main floor in addition to 18 dormitory rooms will be a lobby and two reception rooms a large lounge room to the right of the main entrance and along the rear of the building a dining room to the left rear kitchens trunk storage rooms showers and toilet facilities the students rooms will be along the front or campus expos ure on the first floor on the other three floors the dormitory rooms will occupy practically all the space suites to be arranged the corner rooms on all floors will be arranged as suites with separate study and sleeping rooms other rooms will be planned as combination study and sleeping rooms although in all cases suite arrangements may be made if de sired by students there will be connecting doors to make this pos sible the first floors is planed to ac comodate approximately 18 stud continued on page four auto crashes on hill bridge vehicle driven by student careens into pylons and passing cars careening across the hill-to-hill bridge a car driven by a lehigh student tuesday evening side wiped two cars and finally at the south end of the bridge crashed into a stone pylon which spun into the radiator of a passing packard sedan although the coupe driven by john s patterson bus 39 side wiped two more pylons after un seating the first neither of its oc cupants was hurt patterson and his companion who is unidenti fied left the scene of the accident in a taxicab car skidded at ramp according to an eye-witness re on the slippery pavement near port patterson's car first skidded the second avenue ramp on the north end of the bridge and bump ed the curb swerving across the road the car stayed on the left hand side about half way across the bridge it side-wiped a sedan crumpling the fenders on both cars after narrowly missing a second car the coupe struck a third causing only slight damage unable to cross the road after wards patterson hit the first cem ent pylon separating traffic on the south end of the bridge the staunchion was unseated and rol led into the path of the packard sedan strikes pylon failing to avoid the staunchion the sedan smashed into it the rad iator bumper and front fenders were crumpled after grazing two more pylons patterson stopped his car his cou pe was badly wrecked the left front wheel was knocked off two fenders were smashed and the left back wheel damaged patterson gave himself up to the police after leaving the scene of the crash he was later released on 500 bail a hearing will be held monday or tuesday evening according to a bethlehem alder man patterson lives at 509 seminole street o palmer revises rules philip m palmer dean of the college of arts and sciences and chairman of the committee on rules and regulations anounced today that the pamphlet entitled char ter and regulations of lehigh uni versity has been revised and will be published in its new form in the near future 4 are awarded honorary degrees at founder's day exercises emery tablet unveiled lehigh university granted hon orary degrees to four men and paid tribute to former adminis trative officials at its 59th foun der's day exercises thursday morning dean albert g rau of moravian college for men who was the principal speaker attacked the heads i win tails you loose ec onomy that is being advocated by what he termed the new philos ophy which has grown up since the war in his address entitled the new frontier in honor of the late dr henry sturgis drinker president of the university from 1905-1921 an oak tree was planted on the campus tribute to the former lehigh edu cator was paid by eugene g grace president of the board of trustees and s j cort president of the alumni association palmer eulogizes emery a memorial tablet was unveiled in packer memorial chapel to the memory of dr natt m emery vice-president and comptroller at the time of his death two years ago dean p m palmer of the college of arts and science spoke thirteen baccalaureate and eight master's degrees were conferred by president c c williams prizes and honors for 130 under graduates were announced by dean c m mcconn dean albert g rau of moravian college for men whose topic was the new frontier said per haps nothing has awakened the public to the dangers that lie im mediately in front of us so much as the action of a number of le high men who exposed the falla cies of john lewis's contentions for the moment at least these men have discredited mr lewis before the whole country praises drinker in paying homage to the late dr drinker the guest speaker who fifty years ago entered lehigh university as a senior said to those who knew him he was never pessimistic but always realistic and always optimistic if any man in the whole lehigh group believed in the force of the spirit it was henry drinker i could not find a single prominent lehigh man who is devoted to the fallacies that i have described before dean palmer in paying tribute to dr emery stated dr emery's ideals were high his great pur pose in life was to make lehigh university a better and greater institution and to this ideal he sacrificed jiis personal ambition and gave
