reunion of the cosmos club j palmer murphy board names murphy editor also approves recent elec tions of epitome and review officers three hundred voices and an or chestra • of 50 will unite to present the 39th bach festival on may 28 and 29 in the packer memorial chapel bruce carey director of the bach choir is now working with his choristers to put the finishing touches on the music doctor shields to play dr t edgar shields who has been organist of the bach festival since 1901 will play again at the festival mrs ruth becker meyers of bethlehem will be at the piano the soloists for the festival are for the most part metropolitan stars this year they will be so prano louise lerch altos grace lamar and lilian knowles tenor arthur kraft bass julian huhn about 20 members of the choir were in sunbury last night where they assisted a newly organized bach choir in that city in singing the b minor mass postpone action on consolidation benjamin l miller head of the department of geology will leave new york on june 2 on a trip that will take him around the world he will be on a ieave of absence from the university on landing in europe dr miller will make his way slowly through belgium holland german and poland and will visit and make a study of points of geologic interest by the end of june he expects to be in moscow from the first of july to the lat ter part of august the international geographical society which in cludes members from almost every country will be in session dr miller will attend the sessions of the society and go on some of the excursions which are designed to include a study of mines and points of interest to geologists toward the end of august he will go across siberia by railroad to china where he will stay for a month or six weeks then he will proceed to japan to visit the uni versities and other points of interest to him dr miller will leave japan in november and cross the pacific ocean to the united states he will then return to bethlehem to resume his teaching duties he ex pects to be here by thanksgiving dr donald m fraser assistant professor of geology will be the acting head of the department in the absence of dr miller criticisms made dr e l crum associate pro fessor of classical languages and head of the department ot greek was the guest speaker at the an nual reunion meeting oi the cosmos club tuesday evening in the r acuity club room of drown hall doctor crum's subject was portu guese architecture and he illustrat ed his lecture with slides of photo graphs which he took while on a sabatical leave in portugal during the year 1935-36 the cosmos club is composed oi eleven members of the faculty who have published research works in their fields it is a rotating body members being elected for a two months term said dr c a shook associate professor of mathematics secretary of the club eighteen former members of the club were guests of the active mem bers at the dinner meeting dr f a bradford professor of at the bethlehem club at which time the ten new men will be ini tiated and officers for next year will be chosen election to o d k is based on a point system these men were selected at last tuesday night's meeting from a large group of candidates at this meeting several changes in the point system were made effective next year and a change in initiation procedure was ap proved a committee ini tiation which was approved the tapping at the flagpole this year was contrary to custom due to the fact that the date for the banquet was changed from last night to the coming sunday and a vote of the fraternity determined to eliminate private pledging in the hour preceeding the banquet as has been formerly practiced o society outing cancelled the proposed outing of the rob ert w blake society honorary philosophical society to the summer home of professor hughes head of the department of philosophy has been cancelled because of lack of time to make the trip before exam inations 2 the student criticism committee composed of the senior tau beta pi and all the phi beta kappa mem bers drew up a report on the crit icisms submitted by students for presentation to president c c wil liams b k daubenspeck ch e 37 secretary of the committee will make the report president williams will pass the criticisms to the heads of the de partments which are concerned nelson j leonard chem 37 chairman of the committee said that the criticisms which were submit ted were constructive and worthy and that if possible they help to improve conditions at lehigh j palmer murphy arts 38 will be editor in chief of the brown and white for the coming year he was elected to succeed george yanko arts 37 at a meeting of the board of publications wednesday after noon in the office of the chairman of the board dean c m mcconn the board also approved the re cent elections of officers of the 1938 epitome and of the review action on the pi delta epsilon plan to eliminate all advertising from the epitome was deferred until thurs day may 27 when the board will hold a special meeting at 8 p m in the office of dean mcconn board accepts reports financial reports of all student publications were educational policy committee two years of compulsory chapel as a means of fulfilling a university requirement will become past his tory at lehigh the committee gave a one hun dred percent endorsement tuesday to a brown and white plan that would permit students to satisfy the moral and religious philosophy re quirement by any of the three fol lowing methods 1 — one year of chapel atten dance at an average of at least four times a week or 2 — one semester of chapel at tendance at least four times a week and one semester of a moral and religious philosophy course or 3 — two semesters of moral and religious philosophy courses this revised plan was formulated jointly by dr claude beardslee head of the department of moral and religious philosophy and the brown and white at the instigation of the campus newspaper its effect is to limit compulsory chapel to one year instead of two and to increase the minimum attendance requirement from 60 percent to 80 percent for that one year power of the educational policy committee is purely recommenda tory points out dean mcconn final approval of the proposal lies with the faculty who next meet monday june 7 dr beardslee favors it while the revisions of the present system were suggested by the brown and white it was largely through the wholehearted 1 coopera tion of dr beardslee who express ed himself before the committee as believing the proposal has sufficient merit so that in my opinion i heartily favor trying it that the plan has been successfully advanced thus far conferences on the plan were started before the spring va cation and finally culminated in the present suggestions in the latter part of april if the recommendation of the educational policy committee meets with the approval of their parent body on june 7 incoming freshmen will operate under the new setup while the present freshman class will be the last to operate under the old the last change in the moral and religious requirements was effected in 1931 when the university adopt ed the policy of maintaining non devotional instruction for those electing chapel previous to this chapel consisted of devotional exer cises under the new plan an under graduate electing chapel would at tend approximately 120 chapels dur ing the one year instead of approx imately 90 chapels each of two years thus it is felt freshman work will be concentrated in that period when chapel is of most ben efit to the new student while soph omores will be relieved from a course which experience has shown contains little value from their standpoint o dean palmer to preside at freeland graduation philip m palmer dean of the college of arts and science has been asked to be chairman of the evening at the graduate exercises of the mining and mechanical institute of freeland this school has a great inter est for lehigh founded by mr eckley b cox for many years a trustee and benefactor of this uni versity the school sends a large number of its graduates to lehigh the present headmaster of the school is a lehigh graduate said dean palmer ten juniors were tapped to omi cron delta kappa senior honorary and ten sophomores were tapped to cyanide junior honorary and
