at their home on riverside drive and 73rd street new york lehigh traditional hotbed of con servatism and the republican party made concessions to the commun ist party last saturday as an un expected added attraction for the sub-freshman guests as the strains of the interna tionale communist anthem — the tred of marching workers feet — the harangues of soapbox orators were heard around the world from union square new york to red square moscow and back again in celebration of may day tradi tional communist holiday lehigh with customary complacency chose to ignore the cries of the down trodden and instead of calling off classes on this day of days sche duled sub-freshman day and in vited 500 guests to see the univer sity on display greeted by communist flag scarcely can one imagine the consternation of the authorities and the surprise of the guests when they appeared on the campus saturday morning to find proudly waving o'er them not the stars and stripes but the red flag with crossed ham mer and sikle — the ensign of so viet russia efforts to remove the unschedul ed exhibit were thwarted by the fact that the unknown person or person who had raised it had jam med it into the pulley and early at tempts at dislodgement had broken the weather scarred halyards because of the uncertain stabil ity of the wooden flag pole it was deemed inadvisable to send anyone with spiked shoes up to remove the banner several students were thwarted in their efforts to scale the pole and in desperation the beth lehem fire department was sum moned however a survey by the chief himself showed that 1 the hook and ladder truck could not get near enough to the pole and 2 their longest ladder was too short for the job engage steeplejack the flag fluttered gaily above the crowd until after the band had formed at the pole to lead the march to the ball game at 2 p m finally a steeplejack was located continued on page four while musing the time away at the well known beethoven maen nerchor recently a student joseph matteson bus 40 heard the silence broken by the shout i'll give any body here 5 if he'll play one piece on the piano joe not quite believing his ears turned sized up the drunk throw ing his money away and then ran to the piano offering a rather poor rendition of moon glow the drunk was pleased no end and refused to take back the money that he had given to the student and both parties left feeling much happier and as though they had accomplished something why study if money comes that easy to all who let opportunity knock but once the belief that retail price con trol is generally lawful today seems to be warranted said albert har ing associate professor of econom ics in beginning his speech on pricing problems relating to branded merchandise which he gave before the united states chamber of commerce last wed nesday at its twenty-fifth annual meeting in washington d c he spoke before the round table dis cussing price-making in distribu tion professor haring said that in or der to successfully solve the pric ing problem of today the manufac turer must first squeeze out sur plus promotion costs learn and meet the quality requirements of his market and then choose methods of distribution which do not in volve too much competitive waste the fair trade acts and re tail price control contracts offer no panacea to either manufacturer or distributor competition will be changed and quite possibly its ethics somewhat enhanced the sev erity of competition will be no way lessened private brands usually sell for less than national brands of equal quality because they have been pushed by low cost retailers and they cost less quality for quality than national brands said haring the brown and white price . . . five cents bethlehem pa
