the negative for upsala the debate which was given be fore the men's club of the holy trinity lutheran church in east orange n j was judged by three men picked from the audience suggest legislation the affirmative argued that there was a need for such legislation to increase the purchasing power of the masses and because of the rela tive inequality of bargaining pow ers at present since the problem was national in scope and since only legislative action would be ef ficient congress is the agency which should regulate wages and hours they also suggested a means by which the proposal could easily be put into operation in the formation of a commission similar in form and function to the interstate commerce commission negative agrees the negative agreed that there was a need for some sort of reg ulation and that the problem was national in scope but that such reg ulation by congress would raise prices and produce migration of in dustry they suggested as a better plan cooperation ettinger on england dr amos ettinger associate professor of history spoke on the subject of england during the last decade at a meeting of the international club of cedar crest college on tuesday night at the as ter garden in allentown dr et tinger was in england most of the past decade and observed the cus toms and traditions of that coun try tn his talk dr ettinger partic ularly discussed the school systems and political situations of england miss emille parnell of allen town president and a member of the senior class presided follow ing the talk by dr ettinger a short musical program was given trends in educational legislation now pending before the state leg islature were discussed by dr har old p thomas head of the depart ment of education at a meeting of the bethlehem university women tuesday evening in the hotel beth lehem the financial trend said dr thomas is to shift a greater bur den on the state and an attempt to tap new sources of revenue for edu cation the state is paramount in education and it derives its power from the constitution extension of education was not ed in changes in compulsory edu cation laws and better educational provisions for the average child professor thomas presented a general picture of the pennsylvania educational system including its 2,000,000 pupils and 65,000 teachers o dr crum to lecture to classical league dr earl le verne crum associate professor of classical languages will lecture on the iberian peninsula before the classical league of the lehigh valley at 2:30 p m satur day march 13 the meeting will be held in scenes of fisher huts and rocky shores mrs blanch lucas of bethlehem has loaned a display of water colors by english artists these water colors said garth a howland head of the department of fine arts are vastly different in treatment from american water colors while the american school is accustomed to using rather brilliant coloring the english school is delicate in its treatment of water
