transportation for those undergrad uates who have no method of travel to see an encounter which coach billy sheridan expects to be one of the closest of the year is being sponsored by the brown and white on a non-profit basis the bus which will be of the type used by athletic teams when they travel will leave christmas saucon hall at 4:45 p m and arrive well before the junior varsity meet which starts at 7 p m in the princeton gymnasium the varsity match will go on at 8:30 o'clock immediately following the junior varsity matches tickets are 55 cents tickets will be on sale at prince ton at 55 cents each those who wish to make the bus trip should communicate with russell stevens at the alpha chi rho fraternity telephone 651 by monday evening the latest the bus will leave from christmas-saucon hall at 4:45 p.m so far this season princeton has defeated yale rutgers harvard university of pennsylvania and perm state proposes construction of reservoirs levees as public project group to present musical program will give 10th program featuring students coach glen harmeson will direct lehigh's football and basketball teams for three more years this announcement was made by president c c williams yesterday morning harmeson who has been the head coach of football and bas ketball for three years signed the contract yesterday morning after negotiations and consulta tions had been carried on between the university and harmeson for several weeks he signed as head mentor for three years the amount stiplated in the contract was not revealed by president williams coached at purdue harmeson came from a coaching job at purdue in 1934 last year his football team won six out of eight the best record compiled by any lehigh football team since 1923 the victory over perm state was the first since 1917 and the win over rutgers the first in ten years harmeson's teams have defeated lafayette every year since he has been director of the squads the mentor who was graduated from purdue in 1930 as a bachelor of science in physical education was a varsity football and basketball player for the boilermakers in 1930 when purdue was big ten champion in basketball harmeson was the high scoring forward of the big ten after graduation from purdue he remained there as freshman football coach for two years he also coach ed the varsity backfield for two years prior to his coming here during his four years at purdue he was also freshman basketball coach karl jacobi president of arcadia was appointed head of a committee to revise the arcadia constitution at an arcadia meeting held at drown hall last night the chief reason for revising the constitution stated jacobi is to make attendance of arcadia meet ings compulsory i also believe that the constitution as a whole is ob solete and many parts need to be changed i believe continued jacobi that the town group which up to this time is not represented in the meetings should be able to have representatives attend the meet ings committee named for this latter change a commit tee consisting of charles mccoy arts 37 robert bailey arts 38 gardner van duyne arts 37 and karl jacobi was selected this committee is to formulate a system by which the town group can be represented and also to arrange a plan for compulsory attendance of the meetings the committee is not expected to report its findings un til near the end of the year this committee will meet several times with dr claude g beardslee pro fessor of moral and religious phil osophy to discuss methods of changing the constitution at this meeting arcadia appro priated 100 as a gift to peter mor rissey swimming coach who is ill at st luke's hospital the student governing body also pledged 150 for the golf team and 35 for the international relations club there was also a discussion of the coming convention of the pennsyl vania association of college stu dents which will be held at lehigh on march 12 and 13 the program was discussed and will be announc ed as soon as final preparations for the convention will take place on friday march 12 from 9 to 11:30 a m plans for the election of guides for sub-freshman day were also dis cussed these plans will be complet ed at the next arcadia meeting in march 100.42 collected for flood relief swenson lauds lehigh for red cross drive focht describes delaware bridge easton link is discussed by engineers proposing two methods of flood control president c c williams discussed flood conditions in ad dressing the bethlehem kiwanis club thursday noon president williams pointed out that because of the sizable amount of water which overflowed the banks of the mississippi a system of reservoirs would be unfeasible for this river but he stated that such a system would be very prac ticable to prevent serious floods at pittsburgh and places along the ohio delaware susquehanna and lehigh rivers for large rivers like the lower mississippi the only practical pro cedure is to build levees and other training and regulatory works as may be necessary to confine the flow to a limited channel stated president williams the cost of flood control meas ures was discussed in giving further details of regulatory methods flood control projects are typ ical public works which result in social benefit without involving any product or service which must be marketed in competition with pri vate industries and hence are proper undertakings for public con struction and ownership concluded president williams movies and colored slides will be used by mrs mary akeley in her lecture to be given tonight under the auspices of the student concert lectures series this will mark the first time in the history of the series that a speaker has used this method of illustration according to earl rogers who serves as lecture assistant in the physics building both the movie projector and the stereoptican will be set up in the middle of the audi torium instead of in the projection booth this will provide for an im age of maximum sharpness with out sacrificing size slides are priceless mrs akeley has a large collection of hand-colored slides made from negatives obtained during her sev eral expeditions to africa some of those that she obtained with her husband the late carl f akeley are considered priceless by students of natural history mrs akeley will also show sev eral reels of moving pictures these will feature the only movie shots ever taken of african gorillas in their native habitat it was with these pictures that mrs akeley was able to substantiate her husband's thesis that the gorilla is not a sav age killer of the jungle but the most dignified and intelligent of all jungle beasts pictures taken by husband taking these pictures was carl akeley's last scientific donations are still coming into the lehigh union office a to tal of 100.42 had been received up to yesterday afternoon this week two more living groups contributed to the fund these liv ing groups are lambda chi alpha and section c taylor hall the highest living group contributions came from delta upsilon pi kappa alpha and theta delta chi this makes a total of eight living groups that have contributed to the fund the remaining living groups still have time to send their con tributions to the union office as the money collected is not going to be sent to red cross headquarters un til two men that get the most advertisements for the next hand book will be recommended for the positions of editorial manager and business manager the five next highest men will receive positions on the board of the publication league discussed moravian cedar crest and beaver winners vie for throne beauty to be crowned at midnight ceremony ballots will be printed in brown and white on tuesday three girls winners of beauty contests conducted at beaver col lege cedar crest college and the moravian college for women have entered the competition for queen of the military ball sponsored by scabbard and blade honorary mil itary society on march 6 the girl selected will be lehigh's first beauty queen to be chosen by poll the queen will be selected by a poll of the student body ballots for the election will be printed in tuesday's issue of the brown and white and that same evening mem bers of scabbard and blade will collect the ballots from the living groups pictures and posters of the and w h wil son field engineer at easton for the same organization addressed a meeting of the american society of civil engineers wednesday night in packard auditorium mr focht spoke on the new toll bridge now under construction which will connect easton and phillipsburg when completed he told of the traffic situation in eas ton of the extensive traffic survey that was made and of the type of construction that was being done the new bridge will be about 1200 feet north of the old bridge which replaced an old wooden structure the old bridge will not be de stroyed mr wilson illustrated with this is their first performance this season although they were on two programs last year although the drive for contribu tions to aid in the flood relief fund of the american red cross ended tuesday donations are still coming into the lehigh union office a to tal of 100.42 had been received up to yesterday afternoon this week two more living groups contributed to the fund these liv ing groups are lambda chi alpha and section c taylor hall the highest living group contributions came from delta upsilon pi kappa alpha and theta delta chi this makes a total of eight living groups that have contributed to the fund the remaining living groups still have time to send their con tributions to the union office as the money collected is not going to be sent to red cross headquarters un til next week a number of frater nity houses have made contribu tions directly to the red cross headquarters alvin swenson bus 37 president of the lehigh union announced that he is completely satisfied with the response of lehigh students to the drive for funds o juniors in competition for handbook offices about 14 juniors reported to dale h gramley assistant professor of journalism wednesday to compete for the positions of editorial man ager and business manager of the freshman handbook the competi tors picked from a hat former ad vertisements which they are to get for the next handbook the two men that get the most advertisements for the next hand book will be recommended for the positions of editorial manager and business manager the five next highest men will receive positions on the board of the publication league discussed moravian cedar crest and beaver winners vie for throne beauty to be crowned at midnight ceremony ballots will be printed in brown and white on tuesday three girls winners of beauty contests conducted at beaver col lege cedar crest college and the moravian college for women have entered the competition for queen of the military ball sponsored by scabbard and blade honorary mil itary society on march 6 the girl selected will be lehigh's first beauty queen to be chosen by poll the queen will be selected by a poll of the student body ballots for the election will be printed in tuesday's issue of the brown and white and that same evening mem bers of scabbard and blade will collect the ballots from the living groups pictures and posters of the competing girls will be posted on the bulletin boards and sent to all living groups miss sally bird of allentown miss maude manogue of philadel phia and miss mary malloy of bethlehem will represent cedar crest beaver and moravian col leges respectively the queen of the ball will be an nounced at midnight at the ball at which time there will be a formal ceremony for crowning the queen the winner of the contest will be escorted to the throne through an arch of sabers by v j pazzetti bus 37 captain of the scabbard and blade society miles will crown queen brigadier-general miles comman der of the first corps area will crown the girl queen she will also be made an honorary cadet colonel of scabbard and blade the runners up being made honorary cadet cap tains members of scabbard and blade who will appear in uniforms will form the arch with their sabers scabbard and blade asked the deans of four colleges if they would have a beauty contest conducted on their campuses in preparation for the selection of the queen mora vian cedar crest and beaver col leges agreed to the contest swarth more college had also been asked to join the competition but the dean declined the invitation jan for the dance are 3 and they can be secured from any member of scabbard and blade university women hold informal meeting louis focht chief engineer for the delaware river joint toll bridge commission and w h wil son field engineer at easton for the same organization addressed a meeting of the american society of civil engineers wednesday night in packard auditorium mr focht spoke on the new toll bridge now under construction which will connect easton and phillipsburg when completed he told of the traffic situation in eas ton of the extensive traffic survey that was made and of the type of construction that was being done the new bridge will be about 1200 feet north of the old bridge which replaced an old wooden structure the old bridge will not be de stroyed mr wilson illustrated with slides the construction of the concrete foundations which are nearly com pleted he gave some dates for the scheduled completion of the span saying that the steel should be completely ready by
