ewing take leads col nelson a kelloog di rector of athletics issued the following statement early to day i expect coach glen har meson to sign his new contract within the next few days speculation as to whether or not glen harmeson head football and basketball coach would have his contract offered by the university was closed yesterday afternoon when a university official announced that the university had sent a new contract to harmeson harmeson in connection with coaching at lehigh next year said i would like to be back here next fall as football coach and i hope that things can be arranged that will be suitable for both the administra tion and myself so that i may come back harmeson has not had time as yet to sign and return the con tract the salary stipulated in the contract was not disclosed coached since 1934 glen harmeson has held the po sition of head basketball and foot ball coach since march 1934 pre vious to his position here he was assistant coach at purdue univer sity for four years after graduation from the school he graduated with a bachelor of science degree in 1930 harmeson is a member of the phi delta theta fraternity and also a member of the gimlet club at purdue won 3 major letters he was prominent in purdue ath letics winning his numerals in foot ball basketball baseball and ten nis for three years he was on the varsity teams of the same sports and at their meeting thursday afternoon at this meet ing plans were laid for the next program which will be presented on feb 26 in the broughal high school auditorium mrs akeley will appear at le high in place of william beebe ex plorer of deep sea life who had been previously scheduled dr beebe again cancelled his appear ance because of a reoccurrence of a sinus infection hunted with camera her topic will be the restless jungle illustrated by slides and motion pictures she has recently returned from an exploration trip through the african jungle and gorilla paradise mrs akeley hunts with a camera numerous times she has hesitated to use a gun facing death so she could photograph the habits of wild beasts at close range the motion pictures will depict the last of the game herds and constitute a visual record of the old africa which she believes to be rapidly decreasing the trip took her through kenya and uganda the congo region and tanganyika providing her with first hand knowledge of the beasts in habiting the veldt mrs akeley is one of the few living women who can speak authoritatively on the pygmies who populate belgian con go agree fellow explorers decorated by king albert studies hell week hell week is defined in dean mcconn's edict as including the fol lowing practices missions or errands send ing freshmen out to count the planks in a bridge to get sig natures to bring back specified articles or on any other pre texts ; the so-called walk taking freshmen out of town singly or in a group to walk back paddling and all other kinds of exposure humiliation torture or endurance test the threatened custom does not include the following any educational program of study recitation and written or oral examinations special house duties such as scrub bing floors washing windows painting and the like ; or en tertainment stunts by fresh man at or after dinner com prising speeches songs plays and vaudeville acts gives warning in a letter to the fraternity heads this clear case of violation of the pledge pre sents itself i shall take the oppor tunity to make an example of the fraternity women to give fashion showing dr wooley to address valley college association as announced on his wabc broadcast from the hotel astor grill last sunday at midnight vin cent lopez will name the winners in the song-writing contest he has been sponsoring at lehigh new york university columbia and rutgers this sunday night on the same program he will orchestrate publish and feature the winning songs all rev enue derived from marketing the songs will go to the composers the contest which ended wednesday feb 10 has afforded lopez a first hand view of the amateur song-writ ing situation and he is convinced that the production of song hits does not necessarily have to be con fined to tin pan alley may organize agency at the close of the contest lo pez stated when i started this contest i felt that only a few weeks time was necessary to receive and pass upon the works of the com peting collegiate tunesmiths but there were so many good numbers on a par with each other that i had to extend the time an addi tional two weeks lopez hopes to organize an agen cy to act as a commercial outlet for other amateur composers the announcement of the winners was scheduled for last sunday evening but lopez was unable to accom modate because of the extension of the time for the contest lehigh students entered a total of 13 songs in the contest there will be a winner in each university the site of the military ball for which jan savitt and his tophat ters orchestra are to play was re cently changed to the masonic temple from the national guard ar mory pat pazzetti bus 37 captain of the scabbard and blade society stated the scene of the military ball has been changed because we met with some insurmountable dif ficulties there have been corn paints by residents against other dance held at the armory and the committee in charge together with dean c m mcconn decided it wisest to change the scene of the ball from the armory to the ma sonic temple to choose queen a beauty contest to choose the queen of the ball will be held about a week and a half before the dance the girls who will compete will be chosen from the student bodies of moravian seminary for women cedar crest college in allentown beaver college in jenkinstown and swarthmore college swarthmore the queen will be chosen through pictures in the brown and white and by a canvass of lehigh stu dents the winner will be announc ed the evening of the dance and she will be made an honorary cadet colonel miss mary malloy college stu dent at moravian seminary has been chosen to represent the school in the competition with girls from the oth er colleges the two runners-up of the contest will be awarded hon orary cadet captaincies of the scab bard and blade society army men to attend mrs carter collins wife of the assistant professor of military sci ence and tactics is arranging a pro gram which will include a number of notable army men the committee in charge of the ball includes a a swenson bus 37 chairman f g simmons m.e 37 c w kuhl bus 37 d m scott bus 37 w.h glander eng 39 and for the contest lehigh students entered a total of 13 songs in the contest there will be a winner in each university the site of the military ball for which jan savitt and his tophat ters orchestra are to play was re cently changed to the masonic temple from the national guard ar mory pat pazzetti bus 37 captain of the scabbard and blade society stated the scene of the military ball has been changed because we met with some insurmountable dif ficulties there have been corn paints by residents against other dance held at the armory and the committee in charge together with dean c m mcconn decided it wisest to change the scene of the ball from the armory to the ma sonic temple to choose queen a beauty contest to choose the queen of the ball will be held about a week and a half before the dance the girls who will compete will be chosen from the student bodies of moravian seminary for women cedar crest college in allentown beaver college in jenkinstown and swarthmore college swarthmore the queen will be chosen through pictures in the brown and white and by a canvass of lehigh stu dents the winner will be announc ed the evening of the dance and she will be made an honorary cadet colonel miss mary malloy college stu dent at moravian seminary has been chosen to represent the school in the competition with girls from the oth er colleges the two runners-up of the contest will be awarded hon orary cadet captaincies of the scab bard and blade society army men to attend mrs carter collins wife of the assistant professor of military sci ence and tactics is arranging a pro
