dr wrank h congdon director of admissions left this week for a two weeks trip into the new eng land states to visit various high schools and preparatory schools dr congdon expects to speak to students in some 20 secondary schools as his itinery will permit on his return trip the admissions director will attend college-choos ing programs at schools in and about new york city they are the abraham lincoln high school new york city mamaroneck high school rye neck high school and valley stream high school to hold tests for pre - meds returned to their rooms to celebrate over a bottle of root beer which they had secured for the occasion a short time later the chaperones discovered that the door was firm ly and permanently closed their cries for aid were answered by the same group of freshmen economics at the university of wis consin was the guest speaker of the meeting professor jerome spoke on the work that the national bureau of economic research is carrying on emphasizing their work on the anal ysis of prices and showing how the bureau presents facts that are un biased following professor jerome's talk the group unanimously voted to form a statistical society of lehigh the purpose or function of the so ciety as dean g b curtis express ed it is to gather to pool informa tion so that problems arising in sta tistics could be solved more readily explains methods dean curtis explained the statis tical methods used in the registrar's office for the classification of stu dents a committee was chosen for the purpose of further organizing the society prof e c bratt assistant professor of economics was the chairman other members of the committee are dr f s beale as sistant professor of mathematics dean curtis and mr greene of the lehigh and new england rail road the committee will make plans for the next meeting deciding when it will be held and who the speaker will be dr harry f hoffman assistant superintendent of the allentown state hospital spoke of the need of individual examinations to discover psychiatric troubles in students at the meeting of the faculty educa tional club yesterday the subject of the talk was psychiatric service in the universities dr hoffman spoke of the work of psychiatrists in universities he said that the normal development of the individual showed troubles de veloped in childhood which come into the open in later life many times these troubles are in a dis guised form and hard to identify he further stated that to have good health a person must be sound of mind and body alike the question was asked what examinations could be taken to de tect these troubles in the early stages dr hoffman answered by saying that each person is a prob lem by himself requiring individual study there is no general formula for anyone the troubles in individual per sons can come from many sources he continued they are sometimes caused by fear and dread the ner vous system is responsible for the majority of these troubles dr hoffman states use this test as a normal regulation for admission all senior students expecting to apply for entrance to medical schools before or in the fall of 1937 must immediately apply to take the test show diagrams talks on health thursday senior ball oct 30 1936 financial report a new hardinge conical mill a gift of the hardinge company york was set up last week in the cox mining laboratory the conical shaped mill which is used for fine grinding of ores has a diameter of two feet at its base prof howard eckfeldt head of the mining department explained that wet ore is fed into the large end of the cone where it is ground by three inch steel balls which are tumbled about with the ore in the revolving cone as the steel balls wear down more are placed in the mill because of the conical shape the smaller balls have a tendency to go to the narrow end of the cone where they grind the finer ore in some types of work cobble stones are used instead of steel balls to prevent the introduction of iron into the finished product receives snakes the department of geology has recently been analyzing unusual prehnite mineral specimens ob tained south of bethlehem and gos larite specimens obtained from the friedensville zinc mines says d m fraser assistant professor of geology these prehnite specimens are formed by very fine individual crystal development which con trasts with the large crystals of the usual prehnite doctor fraser states that samples of these minerals will not be ready for approximately a month for ex change purposes with other collec tors individuals or groups the department wishes to study the composition and formations more thoroughly before allowing any to be distributed a talking motion picture the manufacture of wire which was produced in the plant of the beth lehem steel company was shown to the sophomore chemical engineer ing conference on saturday morn ing in the main lecture room of the chemistry building the showing of the film was product the method of rolling the rods from which the wire is later drawn was shown and was explained by the commentary to the picture a description of the bethaniz ing of wire was given this is an electrolytic method of coating wire with zinc the coating produced is 99.99 per cent pure zinc the high est possible purity commercially practical the processes shown in the picture are used in the and detroit are planning to listen to the lehigh-lafayette foot ball game by means of a leased wire telephone broadcast the group will be connected with eas ton by telephone wire loudspeakers will be installed in the club headquarters of the respec tive groups to give a play-by-play description of the game from the lafayette stadium on nov 21 a special type close-range mouth piece will probably be used by the announcer to eliminate side-noise and provide clear transmission arrangements for the transmis sion of the game are being made through the cooperative efforts of the lehigli and lafayette alumni offices and the bell telephone com pany forty people attended the hour of music given by the student concert group in packer memorial chapel on sunday afternoon the concert consisted of show diagrams talks on health thursday senior ball oct 30 1936 financial report a new hardinge conical mill a gift of the hardinge company york was set up last week in the cox mining laboratory the conical shaped mill which is used for fine grinding of ores has a diameter of two feet at its base prof howard eckfeldt head of the mining department explained that wet ore is fed into the large end of the cone where it is ground by three inch steel balls which are tumbled about with the ore in the revolving cone as the steel balls wear down more are placed in the mill because of the conical shape the smaller balls have a tendency to go to the narrow end of the cone where they grind the finer ore in some types of work cobble stones are used instead of steel balls to prevent the introduction of iron into the finished product receives snakes the department of geology has recently been analyzing unusual prehnite mineral specimens ob tained south of bethlehem and gos larite specimens obtained from the friedensville zinc mines says d m fraser assistant professor of geology these prehnite specimens are formed by very fine individual crystal development which con trasts with the large crystals of the usual prehnite doctor fraser states that samples of these minerals will not be ready for approximately a month for ex change purposes with other collec tors individuals or groups the department wishes to study the composition and formations more thoroughly before allowing any to be distributed a talking motion picture the manufacture of wire which was produced in the plant of the beth lehem steel company was shown to the sophomore chemical engineer ing conference on saturday morn ing in the main lecture room of the chemistry building the showing of the film was arranged by w a beck e e 17 who is a member of the advertising staff of the steel company the picture dealt with all phases of the manufacture of wire showing the process from raw material to finished product the method of rolling the rods from which the wire is later drawn was shown and was explained by the commentary to the picture a description of the bethaniz ing of wire was given this is an electrolytic method of coating wire with zinc the coating produced is 99.99 per cent pure zinc the high est possible purity commercially practical the processes shown in the picture are used in the
