returned to lehigh saturday after covering 24,000 miles in 37 states as economic advisor to cal frank knox republican vice presidential candidate since july 29 dr carothers and a party of about 60 correspondents and advisors have been with col onel knox on his private railroad car living on it entirely except for occasional week-ends in hotels at the most important stopping places in the 62 days of the trip they made two complete swings across the u s during this time colonel knox made 59 major speeches and 200 minor ones speaking to almost a million people it was the most in tensive receive an a grade in their first semester mathe matics and all sophomores who at tain this average during their sec ond semester are eligible to become members in the newtonian society lockers entered football players robbed during rutgers game the student concerts group the society which ' was formed last spring to further music appreciation on the campus received formal rec ognition as a university organization from the committee on student ac tivities when they met in dean mc conn's office this afternoon the group is preparing to present a series of concerts throughout the year the first of these will be held on sunday afternoon at 4 p m in packer chapel the trumpler trio consisting of violin flute and piano will present a recital of orchestral music forms committee a committee of organization has been formed for this year the members are raymond k mane val bus 38 general director harry a snyder ch e 39 pro gram director carstens y haas ch e 38 publicity director fred erick c moesel ch e 39 com mitteeman at large and james e patton ch e 39 recording secre tary dr claude g beardslee pro fessor of moral and religious phil osophy is the faculty advisor gave concerts the student concerts group was formed last spring by frank r mallalieu eng physics 36 the society was organized to foster talent and appreciation of music among the student body by perfor mance composition and listening operating under a temporary rec ognition the group presented a se ries of eight concerts which were given in the chapel on sunday eve nings the singers and players were all chosen from the student body as will be the case this year the concerts are free one thousand students house party dates and chaperones danced to the strains of the hudson-dc lange and the charles barnet dance bands friday evening as the senior ball opened the annual fall house party program commenting on the ball dean g b curtis said the affair proceded in perfectly decorous order with no untoward incidents to mar its suc cess diverging from the procedure used last year the committee ar ranged for the barnet band to be stationed on the balcony in the ho tel bethlehem dining room thus allowing the dancers to have the lower floor entirely to themselves the hudson-delange orchestra played in the regular ballroom mcconn absent although most of the various fra ternity chaperones attended the af fair the official chaperones were dean and mrs curtis president and mrs williams and dr and mrs beardslee dean c m mc conn who usually is on the chap erone list was unable to attend be cause of an out of town conference robert w reifsnyder bus 37 member of the dance committee said that very nearly 480 couples bought tickets for the ball this fig ure ranks the 1936 senior ball as the second largest lehigh dance ever held at the hotel bethlehem the 1934 junior prom with ozzie nelson holds attendance records at the hotel the committee in charge of ar rangements consisted of henry s battin bus 37 chairman karl m jacobi bus 37 and robert w reifsnyder bus 37 nelson j leonard chem 37 was selected friday as the only representative from lehigh this year to compete for a rhodes schol arship the lehigh rhodes schol arship committee comprising deans palmer carothers and mcconn made the award one or more students showing some definite quality of distinction whether in intellect character or personality are appointed an nually among the societies of which leonard has been a member are phi eta sigma newtonian so ciety cyanide and pi mv epsilon he belongs to tau beta pi and is president of omicron delta kappa the chemical society and vice president of delta tau delta fraternity he is a member of the soccer and track teams he has re ceived several prizes among them the wilbur prize for the highest average during the sophomore year to study chemistry leonard hopes to continue the study of chemistry and govern ment at oxford and to further his interests in singing at present he is baritone soloist for the glee club candidates for the rhodes scholarships will be interviewed dec 17 by the state committee of selection two of those interview ed will be chosen to the old moravian chapel mr kaesemeyer is a mem ber of beta theta pi fraternity and is affiliated with the fuller com pany of catasauqua a monograph dealing with a very ancient manuscript of alchemy in latin catalan and italian was compiled and copied at naples be tween 1473 and 1490 by arnaldus de bruxella a famous neapolitan printer the author j w wilson first came to lehigh in 1933 in search of material for a census of medieval and renaissance manuscripts in the united states and canada at the same time mr wilson was engaged upon a work entitled a catalogue of latin and vernacular alchemical manuscripts in the united states and canada recognizing the value of the manuscript the author requested that mr leach lend it to him the manuscript was then loaned to the manuscript division of the library of congress for study the result is this 185 page mono graph giving a study of the manu script and its relation to others in the same field the work is pub lished as volume 11 part 8 of osir is studies on history and philos ophy of science by george sar ton thirty-three me n have been named for intramural debating teams representing nine curricula in the colleges of engineering business and arts j calvin callaghan in structor in english and director of debating announced recently the forming of these teams each of which will be led by a member of last year's varsity marks the in auguration of lehigh's newest de bating program intramural debat ing for the time being said callag han the men will devote their time to research in various phases of the several topics selected for collegiate debating this year on nov 18 we will hold an open for um discussion to pool the material which the teams have dug up to do research the research done on the col legiate questions will be merely a form of experience for the new men there will be only one intramural question and it will be of a much lighter nature than any of the var sity topics at the forum the intra mural question will be announced the present set-up of the intra mural program calls for three de bates between the teams from the arts and the business colleges the team winning two of these debates will meet the team representing the engineering college to determine the school champions being repre sented by a team in almost every curriculum the engineers will have to have elimination debates to de cide which athletics in trying to solve the mystery to use x-ray for research chemistry department to use new apparatus in graduate study the recent addition of a new type x-ray tube to the equipment of the chemistry department is making possible new research of great im portance states harold v ander son associate professor of chemis try and supervisor of the x-ray di vision the new apparatus consists of the complete high powers unit neces sary for the operation of an x-ray generator with a valve-tube recti fier capable of operation on 75,000 volts the x-ray tube known as the phillips metalix structure research tube provides the highest intensity copper x-radiations which are avail able at the present time these rays are being used in the graduate school for the research work in the
