formally pledged six freshmen still in contest dramatic club elects 21 men g e official describes unusual electrical ma chines features gen erators and motors officers are elected h c bickel is chosen president robert w wieseman 16 head of the special machine department of the general electric company described four different types of unusual electrical machines at a meeting of the lehigh university branch of the american institute of electrical engineers last night in room 416 packard laboratory wieseman discussed high fre quency generators he explained that the ordinary type of pole struc ture such as the detachable pole was effective up to only 500 cycles the common tooth type pole was effective to 2,000 cycles describes generator he then described the inductor generator which is designed for higher frequencies than 2,000 cycles this machine provides for twice as many poles with a given spread and a given diameter there are no windings at all on the rotor both the armatures and field coils being on the stator the sine-wave generator is used to give a pure sine-wave for test ing purposes under all conditions the speaker showed why conven tional machines were not good enough for this purpose the sine wave generator is a machine with non-salient poles and a uniform air gap it will give a pure sine-wave output pole gets efficiency two speed salient-pole synchron ous motors were described next one half speed is obtained by using two poles pieces per pole and re versing the polarity of one pole piece to get good efficiency at both speeds a specially shaped pole lehigh becomes contributing institution for officers lehigh university has been added to the list of institutions selected to contribute to the officer personnel of the united states marine corps according to an announcement made by major green head of the department of military science and tactics the information was re ceived by president richards from headquarters 3rd corps area u s army baltimore and also by a communication from the p m s and t under this ruling one principal and one alternate will be selected annually from among the members of the graduating class who have completed the military course these choices will be recommended by the head of the department of military science and tactics to the president of the university and then to the secretary of war the individuals glassglow montana its purpose is to store up enough water to provide a constant flow at a point one thousand miles away the project will cost 84,200,000 it is 3,000 feet wide at the base 8,000 feet long and 260 feet high it is the largest hydraulic fill ever at tempted the section surrounding the dam contains an unusual quality of soil that is very firm when moist in drilling four thirty foot glassglow montana its purpose is to store up enough water to provide a constant flow at a point one thousand miles away the project will cost 84,200,000 it is 3,000 feet wide at the base 8,000 feet long and 260 feet high it is the largest hydraulic fill ever at tempted the section surrounding the dam contains an unusual quality of soil that is very firm when moist in drilling four thirty foot
