banquet will be held either at the hotel bethlehemi or the sau con valley country club the com mittee in charge consists of j p butterfield i e 36 chairman j l walton met e 37 j l kor net ch e 36 and d l healey e e 36 tau beta pi which is to engin eers what phi beta kappa is to arts and science men was founded 51 years ago by dr edward h wil liams who was at that time head of the department of mining engin eering and geology dr williams felt in 1885 that there was a definite need for a fraternity that would honor engineering students who had attained scholastic proficiency and who were active in campus activi ties these men were ineligible to phi beta kappa because of the few classical courses included in the en gineering curricula accordingly he gathered around him several students and professors and founded the alpha chapter of the society dr williams lived to see the organization grow from one chapter to sixty-five with a member ship of approximately 22,500 in 1930 at tau beta pi's 45th an niversary a bronze tablet memorial was dedicated to dr williams in his presence in front of williams hall a building which he had donat ed to lehigh 34 years ago dr williams at the age of 89 died nov 2 1933 leaving behind him a society which numbers among its membership many of the lead ing engineers of the country across the river first record dated 1746 the first notation of the existence of loescher in the moravian records is dated 1746 at that time a mora vian settler one joachim sensemann visited the couple bearing a gift of food from the moravian colony he found the loeschers a very old cou ple on this palmer bases another argument for his belief that the loescher cabin antedated the first house in bethlehem he thinks it unlikely that an old couple would have moved into the thick forest that then existed on the mountain at any great age there being but five years between 1741 and 1746 and five years being but a few in the life of an aged couple palmer thinks that the loeschers must have moved in before 1741 the third contention is based on the curious notation found in the moravian records in 1748 this no tation states that in the year 1748 loescher was found cutting a path down from his home to the banks of the lecha or lehigh river the path was to facilitate his burial this is cited by palmer in support of his contention that the couple were aged enough to have moved there before 1741 was near palmer's house the location of loescher's house on a spot near that on which pro fessor palmer's house now stands is verified by the fact that loescher's cabin was located between two springs in that immediate vicinity there are two springs and a small rivulet on professor palmer's prop erty now all of palmer's information on the subject was found in the ar chives building of the moravian col lege much of the information was found in a book titled history of bethlehem pennsylvania 1741 to 1892 written by joseph mortimer levering willie petitions his way through 4 years at lehigh bethlehem's moravians have for nearly 200 years cherished the belief that the first house in bethlehem was built on the site where the ho tel bethlehem now stands this belief is probably correct as far as it goes but in the light of recent investigations it seems true beyond doubt that the first house in the area that now is bethlehem was on a tract of land on old south mountain in the center of what is now the lehigh campus carl palmer arts 38 son of prof and mrs philip m palmer has dis covered what seems to be plausible proof of the fact unearths old map searching the moravian archives in bethlehem for the location of the original king's road between beth lehem and philadelphia palmer un earthed the substantiation in a map dated 1757 and titled tractus charte yon bethlehemer land über dcs lecha auf der mittagsseite in 1757 on the map palmer noticed a house set almost exactly where the front yard of the palmer house is now located it was the home of valentine loescher and his wife that a map of this section dated 1757 shows a house on the south side of the river is little to worry old moravians bethlehem was founded in 1741 the first house was built then proof that the house on south mountain was older than the settle ment of bethlehem lies in three facts all of the land near bethlehem on the south side of the river was then owned by richard perm in 1741 perm issued and carried out an ul timatum forbidding squatters on his land from then on loescher was a squatter it seems not at all improb able then that where he attended a three day conference of the national collegiate football rules committee mr okeson also attended numer ous lehigh club meetings on the coast in an effort to spur the alumni drive for funds to clear the library from its present indebtedness exclusive date is refused by committee mustard and cheese dramatic so ciety was granted permission to hold a dance following the performance of prom trotters april 4 in drown hall but was refused an ex clusive date by the committee on students activities at their meeting monday dean mcconn explained their re fusal to grant the organization an exclusive date as resulting from the congestion of spring dances caused by the cancellation of six dances due to the epidemic of german measles the committee approved the date of april 24-26 for the coming spring houseparties they also sanctioned april 24 as the date of the junior prom the selection of chaperones was approved they will be dean and mrs c m mcconn dean and mrs g b curtis mr and mrs paul calvert and dr and mrs claude g beardslee escobedo to sing over wip gilberto escobedo c e 36 will sing on sunday over station wip philadelphia questionnaire is sent to presidents of all le high fraternities williams endorses move fraternities will be disci plined for answering questions falsely by p e p white the first nail in the coffin of le high's dying hell week was driven yesterday as dean c m mcconn announced measures designed rapid ly to abolish the silly and barbar ous procedures at lehigh most forceful points in the new ruling are the publication of the names of hell week and non-hell week fraternities the use of such a blacklist in talking to freshmen and their parents and the sending of the list to the national chapters of all fraternities the presidents of all fraternities are required to answer two ques tions by wednesday march 11 1 has your chapter already elim inated hell week 2 is your chapter willing to agree to eliminate hell week from this time forward houses stating that they have eliminated hell week later found to be engaging in hell week practices will be punished by university dis cipline probably social probation for a year or more for misrepresen tation of fact to a university officer and through him to the public an optional third question provides for a categorical statement of stunts which will continue to be used in case a chapter proposes to continue as a hell week chapter president c c williams last night endorsed the effectiveness of the plan i am hoping it will bring about the relegation of hell week to the pile of dead customs he said i feel that nearly all national fra ternities are against hazing in any form and that hell week belongs to old-time small-college days dean defines hell week hell week is defined in dean mcconn's edict as including the fol lowing practices missions or errands send ing freshmen out to count the planks in a bridge to get signa tures to bring back specified articles or on any other pre texts the so-called walk taking freshmen out of town singly or in a group to walk back paddling and all other kinds of exposure humiliation torture or endurance test the threatened custom does not include the following any educational program of study recitation and written or oral examination special house duties such as scrubbing floors washing windows painting and the like or entertainment stunts by freshmen at or after dinner comprising speeches songs plays or vaudeville acts segregation of lehigh fraternities into two groups hell week and non hell week will be shown by a list of which the dean says i expect to duplicate this material to have it posted on the bulletin board dur ing the rushing season and to use it in my conversations concerning fraternities with freshmen and their parents — so that both the fresh men who join hell week fraternities and their parents may know in ad vance what they are letting them selves in for i expect also to send copies of the list to the national and district officers of the various fraternities he said ostensibly the dean's letter sent to all chapter presidents makes no pretense at abolition it states in part i have come to the conclu sion that i must be in a position hereafter to give information on this important point pre-initiation practices at each fraternity house to the numerous rushees and par ents who consult me in regard to fraternity choices see end of hell week several campus leaders however last night indicated their belief that the new measures will effect com plete abolition of hell week prob ably by wednesday the date set for the dean's questionnaire to be re continued on page six i respectfully request permission to add extra hours to my rooster no it is not a lehigh valley far mer petitioning the aaa but dean mcconn reading to the committee on petitions a student's request to add extra hours to his roster that is the one that is most fre quent said dean curtis when speaking on the problems and oddi ties of the 800 student petitions presented each year there are all kinds of things that can be done by petitions take the case of willie jones willie wanted to be an engineer and so he wrote doc congdon for admittance to lehigh."you will have to petition the committee on admis sions to allow you to enter with out that required mathematics re plied the director so willie by pe tioning came to be a dweller on old south mountain extra hours floor willie after receiving a 2 average his first semester our embryo engineer petitioned to take extra hours the added load was too much for willie and he joined the list of proba tioners at the close of the spring term to get off pro willie talked to the head of the mathematics depart ment about being gypped and the prof said well you can peti tion for a re-exam — and willie came through again the rigors of the sophomore en gineering course proved too tough and out went willie but willie cherished the walls in ivy dressed and his petition to be reinstated was accepted decides on arts he decided to stay in school for good by changing to the arts col lege after all he was putting up a good fight in formulating good ar guments on his petitions and so the sixth petition job was that change to arts willies next task was to get the required arts credits for junior standing by the petition method of substitution being a social lion in a small way about the valley it later fell to our past engineer to peti tion the dean for permission for his house to hold houseparty and he had no trouble there willies last try at his job of pe titioning his way through lehigh was a request to waive prerequisite so he could take a stab at a little calculus believe it or not willie graduated but all students don't have the art of the pen that willie had for the majority of petitions are writ ten with poor grammar and many reasons are amusingly expressed even though serious and substantial in content however we usually receive three or four real masterpieces in reasoning and argumentation stat ed dean mcconn and those peti tions with thoroughly persuasive ar guments usually have a much better chance of going through than oth ers phi eta sigma will tap in chapel thursday phi eta sigma freshman honor ary fraternity will tap nine fresh men at chapel exercises thursday morning john a cooney e 24-26 for the coming spring houseparties they also sanctioned april 24 as the date of the junior prom the selection of chaperones was approved they will be dean and mrs c m mcconn dean and mrs g b presidents of all le high fraternities williams endorses move fraternities will be disci plined for answering questions falsely by p e p white the first nail in the coffin of le high's dying hell week was driven yesterday as dean c m mcconn announced measures designed rapid ly to abolish the silly and barbar ous procedures at lehigh most forceful points in the new ruling are the publication of the names of hell week and non-hell week fraternities the use of such a blacklist in talking to freshmen and their parents and the sending of the list to the national chapters of all fraternities the presidents of all fraternities are required to answer two ques tions by wednesday march 11 1 has your chapter already elim inated hell week 2 is your chapter willing to agree to eliminate hell week from this time forward houses stating that they have eliminated hell week later found to be engaging in hell week practices will be punished by university dis cipline probably social probation for a year or more for misrepresen tation of fact to a university officer and through him to the public an optional third question provides for a categorical statement of stunts which will continue to be used in case a chapter proposes to continue as a hell week chapter president c c williams last night endorsed the effectiveness of the plan i am hoping it will bring about the relegation of hell week to the pile of dead customs he said i feel that nearly all national fra ternities are against hazing in any form and that hell week belongs to old-time small-college days dean defines hell week hell week is defined in dean mcconn's edict as including the fol lowing practices missions or errands send ing freshmen out to count the planks in a bridge to get signa tures to bring back specified articles or on any other pre texts the so-called walk taking freshmen out of town singly or in a group to walk back paddling and all other kinds of exposure humiliation torture or endurance test the threatened custom does not include the following any educational program of study recitation and written or oral examination special house duties such as scrubbing floors washing windows painting and the like or entertainment stunts by freshmen at or after dinner comprising speeches songs plays or vaudeville acts segregation of lehigh fraternities into two groups hell week and non hell week will be shown by a list of which the dean says i expect to duplicate this material to have it posted on the bulletin board dur ing the rushing season and to use it in my conversations concerning fraternities with freshmen and their parents — so that both the fresh men who join hell week fraternities and their parents may know in ad vance what they are letting them selves in for i expect also to send copies of the list to the national and district officers of the various fraternities he said ostensibly the dean's letter sent to all chapter presidents makes no pretense at abolition it states in part i have come to the conclu sion that i must be in a position hereafter to give information on this important point pre-initiation practices at each fraternity house to the numerous rushees and par ents who consult me in regard to fraternity choices see end of hell week several campus leaders however last night indicated their belief that the new measures will effect com plete abolition of hell week prob ably by wednesday the date set for the dean's questionnaire to be re continued on page six i respectfully request permission to add extra hours to my rooster no it is not a lehigh valley far mer petitioning the aaa but dean mcconn reading to the committee on petitions a student's request to add extra hours to his roster that is the one that is most fre quent said dean curtis when speaking on the problems and oddi ties of the 800 student petitions presented each year there are all kinds of things that can be done by petitions take the case of willie jones willie wanted to be an engineer and so he wrote doc congdon for admittance to lehigh."you will have to petition the committee on admis sions to allow you to enter with out that required mathematics re plied the director so willie by pe tioning came to be a dweller on old south mountain extra hours floor willie after receiving a 2 average his first semester our embryo engineer petitioned to take extra hours the added load was too much for willie and he joined the list of proba tioners at the close of the spring term to get off pro willie talked to the head of the mathematics depart ment about being gypped and the prof said well you can peti tion for a re-exam — and willie came through again the rigors of the sophomore en gineering course proved too tough and out went willie but willie cherished the walls in ivy dressed and his petition to be reinstated was accepted decides on arts he decided to stay in school for good by changing to the arts col lege after all he was putting up a good fight in formulating good ar guments on his petitions and so the sixth petition job was that change to arts willies next task was to get the required arts credits for junior standing by the petition method of substitution being a social lion in a small way about the valley it later fell to our past engineer to peti tion the dean for permission for his house to hold houseparty and he had no trouble there willies last try at his job of pe titioning his way through lehigh was a request to waive prerequisite so he could take a stab at a little calculus believe it or not willie graduated but all students don't have the art of the pen that willie had for the majority of petitions are writ ten with poor grammar and many reasons are amusingly expressed even though serious and substantial in content however we usually receive three or four real masterpieces in reasoning and argumentation stat ed dean mcconn and those peti tions with thoroughly persuasive ar guments usually have a much better chance of going through than oth ers phi eta sigma will tap in chapel thursday phi eta sigma freshman honor ary fraternity will tap nine fresh men at chapel exercises thursday morning john a cooney e
