er the hour remember 10 after eagle scouts elect sturgis alpha epsilon delta sees unusual experiment an experiment in anaphylaxis or hypersensitiveness in guinea pigs was performed before a meeting of alpha epsilon delta honorary pre medical fraternity tuesday after noon at williams hall seniors working for honors in bi ology met with mediocre success in demonstrating the reactions of pigs which had peen sensitized to horse serum on dec 3 at the demonstration the sensi tized guinea pigs were injected with serum and the reactions recorded symptoms of hypersusceptibility are ruffling of fur scratching of the nose and death in cases where the pigs had been highly sensitized by large injections two weeks before when abdominal injections prov ed insufficient further injections were made intravenously and the desired results were obtained enjoy games in drown hall wednesday night a christmas party attended by a group of 100 was held for the stu dents of the mechanical and indus trial engineering courses wednes day evening in drown hall a session of gambling games by students and faculty followed the opening of the meeting by david w hoppock president of the in dustrial engineering tributed to members of the faculty on behalf of student classes of the past and the present 250 children attend party will present concert jan 11 society names wheeler 36 gordon 38 schick 37 as other officers robert sturgis m e 38 was elected president of the lehigh eagle scout association thursday dec 12 at a meeting held in drown hall other officers are william wheeler bus 36 vice president david gordon bus 38 secretary and leonard h schick arts 37 treasurer these officers will serve for the current school year the main purpose of the organ ization of this society is to petition alpha phi omega national hon orary scouting fraternity the peti tion has already been presented to the dean for the approval of the student activities committee there are 12 charter members who have signed the petition for the local chapter but if the petition to the national fraternity is granted the society will expand to around 30 men the next meeting of the society will be on wednesday jan 8 at 7:30 banquet placement office reports an increase over previous years met e.s and e.e.s high of the 264 men who graduated in 1935 225 or 85 percent have se cured employment or are doing graduate work says e robins mor gan director of placement these figures show an increase over those of preceding years using the june figures of each year as a means of comparison in 1934 201 out of 252 or 80 percent of the class were placed in 1933 185 out of 247 or 75 percent were placed in 1932 134 out of 263 or 51 per cent were placed and in 1931 192 out of 305 or 63 percent were placed there are still 13 of last year's class that have not sent any re port to the placement office the chances are very much in favor that the 13 unreported are placed oth erwise they would have responded with the requests for services with the placement office said mr mor gan if such be the case the per centage of men placed would be raised to approximately 90 48 arts men placed of the 52 graduates of the arts college heard from 48 or approx imately 91 percent have been placed about 85 percent or 52 of the 61 business men who have reported to the placement office are now work ing the chemical engineers have placed 28 out of 34 or approximate ly 83 percent while 66 percent of the chemists or 4 out of 6 have been employed the electrical engineers and the metallurgical engineers have both placed 100 percent with 17 of the former and 9 of the latter receiv ing jobs approximately 89 percent of the civil and industrial engin eers are working with 16 out of 18 civils placed and 26 out of 29 in dustrials placed three of the four engineering physicists or 75 percent have been placed of the mechanical engin eers 94 percent or 16 out of 17 have been placed while 88 percent of the mining engineers or 7 out of 8 are working will give paper on coastal study interfraternity council is negotiating with lead er for february 1 has not yet selected site tommy dorsey and his orchestra will probably play for the broth ers band which played at the palais royal in new york sandt's point casino on long island and the glen island casino in addition they made several national tours and one foreign tour three years ago directs haymes orchestra last year the brothers broke up and tom dorsey took over joe haymes orchestra after securing edythe wright to sing for his new band he accepted contracts to play at the french casino in new york he had been selected to play at the lehigh senior ball this year but lafayette secured him first for the lafayette interfraternity ball the band has made records for both laboratory assistant in the mechanical engin eering department the model is to be exhibited at the watt bicentennial exposition which will be held at lehigh jan 19 20 and 21 under the auspices of lehigh university the franklin inistitute of pennsylvania the am erican society of mechanical en gineers and the newcomen society of england every part of this model was made by mr clewell or by one of his assistants r m coates eng 39 and e e hagerman eng 39 among the many problems pre sented by the construction of the model was the construction of the fly wheel it seems that the wheel on the original engine was built in sections to facilitate its transporta tion around england the model flywheel is also built in sections and the entire thing is held together by bolts all of which are made with square heads duplicating the bolts in the oirginal engine have glass sections various parts of the engine have glass sections through which the operations can be watched inside the lower cylinder is a small elec tric light which can be run on pow er from a generator operated by the engine itself at present the engine is being run by compressed air but its construc tion is such that it can be in biology who has recently made a study of the diet of the barn owl discovering the presence of a pair of the birds in the tower of the alumni memorial building mr trembley gathered and studied the pellets of undigested material left by the owls in 110 pellets were found the skulls and jaw bones of 193 meadow mice 11 shrews 22 house mice 10 english sparrows 1 barn rat 1 deer mouse and 2 un known birds the fact that all of the bones with the possible excep tion of the unknown birds are the remains of harmful animals proves the usefulness of the barn owl mr trembley explained that the barn owl potential leading lawyer doctor statesmen or bank er and why shouldn't he be after all the class of 36 is at least as good as the class of 35 and the class of 35 contained such hidden ability as to
