members delta sig ma phi 735 delaware avenue which was entered sunday morning be tween 3 and 3:20 ju m reported that 47 was taken from the house thief familiar with house plan it is the opinion of the members of the two fraternities that the pil ferer was familiar with the plan of their houses and although no one has seen the thief or thieves finger prints of an unknown person were discovered at the delta sigma phi hoose by the police yesterday dean c m mcconn who issued a warning last week to all dormi tory groups to be on the lookout for a person who had looted the lafayette dormitories stated that these robberies were probably not committed by the same person be cause the system used in the local robberies was different from that used at lafayette by marjorie wright the rumor that muth meyers allentown band was substituted for joe haymes at the military ball saturday night is not at all true states philip hooper i.e 37 mem ber of the arrangements committee haymes merely used meyers stands hooper further explained haymes had been under the im pression that the hotel bethlehem would supply the stands conse quently he did not bring his own the committee therefore had to calvin brink research fellow in civil engineering have just completed a paper on the re sults of an investigation yielding formulae for predetermining the stress and strain on the rim and spokes of a wheel for a given load for the first time in recorded his tory man has been able to turn from the system of making wheels empirically arriving at the design by a trial and error method to a scientific approach to the problem the common wheel one of the six simple machines has at last been subjected to a mathematical inves tigation and may now be designed by farmulae dr reynolds worked out the mathematics of a wheel to fit the photoelastic picture of the stresses in a wheel as prepared by ehasz dr reyonlds assumed a stiff per fect line circle as a wheel with its spokes as thin lines which can stand shear moments joined into the cir cle he derived formulae for set ting up simultaneous equations whose solution will give moments and thrusts in the rim of a wheel when the spokes lie in the plane of the rim they will also give mo ments and shears in the spokes theory and practice check the theoretical results showed the spoke to be carrying 92 percent of the load when in its vertical po institute philadel phia the idea for this celebration originated at lehigh two years ago the only existing statue of watt whose invention of the condensing steam engine was the foundation of modern industry stands beside the main entrance to packard labora tory students have constructed a model of watt's original engine which will be on exhibition during the convention a special program will be held here on jan 20 sackett will officiate dean sackett dean of the college of engineering at perm state col lege will officiate at a discussion on the college graduate in industry at 11 a m monday in packard aud itorium luncheon will be served to the delegates at the old sun inn dean greese dean of the college of engineering at princeton will lead a discussion on james watt at 3 p m there will be an informal dinner at 6:30 p m at the hotel bethlehem president clement c williams will preside at a meeting at 8 p m in packard auditorium at which william batt president of the a s m e and william conference were 1 that tariff barriers should be lowered in order that european countries might thereby have the opportunity of paying their war debts 2 that the currencies of all countries especial ly of the united states should be stabilized and 3 that the arma ments of all nations should be re duced booth suggested that the united states should take a more active part in the league of nations and all international affairs he also summarized the ethiopian-italian situation and stated that italy could never conquer ethiopia booth believes that the italian ethiopian affair will finally end in the redistribution of mandates throughout the speech however he emphasized the fact that the whole affair could be settled by peaceful means o more people now eat at drown hall cafeteria business has engineering societies and pi tau sigma honorary mechanical engin eering society are uniting to give a free christmas party to students and faculty in the industrial and mechanical engineering departments tomorrow at 7:30 p m in drown hall the entertainment will consist largely of a gambling contest in which winners will receive prizes christmas presents will be given to faculty members and some of the students refreshments will be served high school femininity invades brown and white to become college editors for sth successive year betty dietz one of the two editors of the libertas spent most of her time in the news editor's slot she was also a bit skeptical con cerning the charms of lehigh students this air view of the news desk was taken the first sunday night the feminine element con sists of mary bowes betty dietz themis sand hos jennie pierok and hildagarde stark the gentleman who holds the key to the situation is john p murphy competing news editor the general air of concentration and the hand-sup ported-heads are a result of brown and white atmosphere mary kindig who covered the mechanical engineering beat was quite professional about taking a story over the phone she was also quite tol erant of student reporters and labeled them friendly and courteous as editorial manager mary bowes was also intrigued by the brown and white minnie-cam eras mary is in high school life the other of the two editors betty dietz has that far-off look as she pre sides over the news desk hovering in the background are mary kindy and ruth brown it's a reporters con
