the hunterdon county grand jury today on charges of manslaughter and departure from the scene of accident the grand jury's verdict will not be released until next monday kreller was held on 1,000 bail in clinton n j after being arrest ed in connection with the death of john utter c.c.c worker at the clinton point camp clinton n.j dean mcconn posted kreller's bail and brought him back to bethlehem last tuesday kreller was returning to bethle hem last sunday night en route 28 he claims that as he approached the bridge over the new jersey central railroads tracks he noticed a truck with bright headlights coming over the middle of the narrow bridge he slowed down and dimmed his head lights but the truck driver failed to do likewise kreller states that he was temporarily blinded forced off auditorium samuel has made an intensive study of bach and besides his ser ious music stresses bach's more human and lively pieces says pro fessor shields students who have riot obtained tickets and mr samuel at one time gave six separate weeks of recitals of bach's music in london an unprecedented accomplishment he has composed the music for a comic opera short operettas incidental music for brown and white office saturday morn ing and sunday evening prepara tory to editing the brown and white for tuesday issue dec 16 the high school reporters were assigned to members of the lehigh staff who explained the technique of collecting the campus news they were introduced to the news sources on their beats next saturday they will collect the news high school officers in charge the high school officers who are in charge are ruth brown editor in chief sybil conant news man ager mary bowes editorial man ager thelma stark make-up edi tor betty dietz news editor the columnists are class at liberty high school this is the fifth successive year that the bethlehem high students have edited the brown and white last year it was done in the second semester a l tennyson to discuss harrison drug act alfred l tennyson head of the legal department of the bureau of narcotics will speak on the harri son narcotic act at the monthly meeting of the robert w hall pre medical society at 7:30 p m thurs day in room 360 packard labora tory the meeting is open to the public the harrison act is a federal law relating to the traffic in drugs which requires all persons handling or par ticipating in the sale of narcotics to be licensed it also requires that the drugs be sold by prescription only the legal department of which mr tennyson is the head is re sponsible for the enforcement of the law making the raids and seizures and punishing the offenders talks on religion petition retracted to be interviewed for scholarship exhibition by lehigh val ley firms held in pack ard laboratory engineers club meets natural resources excellent trans portation facilities and proximity to the great markets of the atlantic seaboard are causes of the devel opment and prosperity of the le high valley region declared dr benjamin miller head of the de partment of geology in his ad dress to the lehigh valley engin eers club in packard auditorium last night dr miller listed almost a score of major industries in the valley including agriculture which pro duces large amounts of dairy pro ducts and fruit in increasing quan tities textiles especially silk ce ment zinc of which the new jer sey zinc company's plant at pal merton has produced over 100,000 tons a year steel slate flour and chemicals the exhibition held in the north wing of packard laboratory in con junction with the meeting was well attended 50 firms display products and processes of over 50 lehigh valley firms as well as ma chines belonging to the university were exhibited the bethlehem globe-times showed a teletypewrit er operating on an associated press wire and a linotype machine set up for operation the new oldsmobile chassis and the old hot air engines of the mechanical engineering de partment attracted much interest a working model of an electric heat-treating furnace and quenching crane all operated automatically were shown by the bethlehem steel company the individual drinking cup company of easton exhibited various types of dixie cups and their containers as well as a mach ine which automatically loads the paper cups with ice cream a metal spray gun which sprays molten metal the way a paint sprayer ap plies paint was in operation on the ground floor the fuller company of catasau qua displayed a working model of a suction grain cargo unloader and cleaner an insulator made of rub ber and glass and over 12 feet long use on modern high tension trans mission lines was exhibited by the pennsylvania power and light com pany a bus with a transverse mo tor in the rear and a modern truck were shown by the mack truck company the several foundry and machine companies of bethlehem allentown and easton sent sam ples of their wares and for the la dies the charis corporation dis played girdles and the national silk dyeing company silk stockings bratt discusses steel production paintings of former uni versity instructor dis played in art gallery thirty paintings and watercolors by the late emil gelhaar instruc tor in free hand drawing from 1899 to 1918 are on exhibit at the uni versity art gallery in the library they will remain on public view un til dec 15 the showing is a memorial ex hibition and is composed of pic tures loaned for the show by fac ulty members and local residents who were gelhaar's friends land scapes and street scenes predom inate but several portraits and mar ines are included in the show gelhaar's particular forte is the realistic recording of exotic land scapes and the factual reporting of historical scenes and buildings in the latter group are his paintings of the local moravian church the mo ravian widows house and the beth lehem steel works as viewed from the new street bridge there is also a painting entitled asa packer's home and tomb which belongs to the university and two portraits of the artist one a bronze bust and the other a realistic painting gelhaar's life was a particularly tragic one and his death membership in the so ciety several members of the faculty and approximately 20 members of the society attended the meeting o frosh union makes plans for dance next semester the freshman union will of new york o keiser to talk to geologists should a mining engineer seek initial experience abroad both sides of this question will be dis cussed by hubert d keiser 16 at the meeting of the mining and geo logical society to be held at 8 p m thursday in the geology lecture room in williams hall mr keiser is now doing research work in fritz laboratory presents 25 christmas seals per student placed as aim for annual sale a quota of 25 christmas seals for each student is the aim of john w maxwell manager of the supply bureau who is in charge of student sales of christmas seals solicitation this year is being con ducted by living groups instead of by mail house heads have received their quotas of seals and were re quested to canvass their respective groups dr r c bull director of the student health service is in charge of faculty sales form letters have been sent to each faculty member requesting a subscription says activities are curtailed dr bull states that the depres sion has caused a lack of funds and necessitated a curtailment of the tuberculosis society's activities x-rays and supplies of cod liver oil and oranges to indigent cases ne cessary for proper treatment of tu berculosis cannot be supplied in many cases an increase in subscriptions is ne cessary to continue properly the work of the society both christ mas seals and health bonds for larger amounts are offered all re ceipts go into the society's general fund dr r w hall head of the de partment of biology is chairman of the publicity committee of the bethlehem tuberculosis and health society and appointed the men to take charge of university sales the local society is part of the state and national associations and takes care of any local tuberculosis cases lehigh students included phi eta sigma discusses cup award changes ralph f howe ch e 38 of allentown was initiated into phi eta sigma freshman scholastic honorary fraternity last evening in drown hall at a meeting of the fraternity following the initiation the plans for the description of the fraternity in the freshman hand book for a change in the awarding of the phi eta sigma cup and for a freshman prize were discussed members of the fraternity feel that it should be more fully de scribed to the freshman in the freshman handbook a plan to make the phi eta sigma cup which is presented every year to the liv ing group whose freshmen have the highest average during the year a temporary award was considered it was proposed that a prize be given to the freshman that makes the greatest improvement during his second semester this proposal will be more fully discussed at the next meeting jan 10 will hold debate moravian students reverse stand to support dean following the presentation of a petition asking removal of their dean students of moravian semin ary and college for women voted today to support her during the re mainder of the school year determined to oust dean edith j stauffer 109 of the 150 students of the college had signed the petition by last thursday following pre sentation to the rev edwin j heath college president they were informed by meons of a notice on the bulletin board that those who wished might remove their names three more were added student opinion suffered a com plete reversal of form today during a college chapel meeting after a talk by president heath the stu dents met without heard a lecture by dr v o hom erberg associate profesor of phy sical metallurgy at the massachu setts institute of technology on friday evening at the hotel traylor in allentown dr homerberg showed a variety of colored metallographic photo graphs of copper brass and steel a discussion was held after the talk the metallurgical faculty and senior metallurgists were among those present will hold dinner finds pig iron tonnage no index to progress pig iron does not well represent the growth of the steel industry writes dr elmer c bratt assistant professor of economics in an ar ticle in the nov 14 issue of iron age he does believe that the pro duction of steel ingots well repre sents the activity of the industry at the present time he says that this is due to the fact that steel has replaced iron in modern industry moreover dr bratt says that steel ingot produc tion does not well represent the growth of the steel industry be cause the growth obtained in this way is made up of both the into eight districts and four candidates will be selected from each district for the scholarship to oxford the financial value of the award is 2000 annually twelve men will be selected from the 600 berculosis cannot be supplied in many cases an increase in subscriptions is ne cessary to continue properly the work of the society both christ mas seals and health bonds for larger amounts are offered all re ceipts go into the society's general fund dr r w hall head of the de partment of biology is chairman of the publicity committee of the bethlehem tuberculosis and health society and appointed the men to take charge of university sales the local society is part of the state and national associations and takes care of any local tuberculosis cases lehigh students included phi eta sigma discusses cup award changes ralph f howe ch e 38 of allentown was initiated into phi eta sigma freshman scholastic honorary fraternity last evening in drown hall at a meeting of the fraternity following the initiation the plans for the description of the fraternity in the freshman hand book for a change in the awarding of the phi eta sigma cup and for a freshman prize were discussed members of the fraternity feel that it should be more fully de scribed to the freshman in the freshman handbook a plan to make the phi eta sigma cup which is presented every year to the liv ing group whose freshmen have the highest average during the year a temporary award was considered it was proposed that a prize be given to the freshman that makes the greatest improvement during his second semester this proposal will be more fully discussed at the next meeting jan 10 will hold debate moravian students reverse stand to support dean following the presentation of a petition asking removal of their dean students of moravian semin ary and college for women voted today to support her during the re mainder of the school year determined to oust dean edith j stauffer 109 of the 150 students of the college had signed the petition by last thursday following pre sentation to the rev edwin j heath college president they were informed by meons of a notice on the bulletin board that those who wished might remove their names three more were added student opinion suffered a com plete reversal of form today during a college chapel meeting after a talk by president heath the stu dents met without heard a lecture by dr v o hom erberg associate profesor of phy sical metallurgy at the massachu setts institute of technology on friday evening at the hotel traylor in allentown dr homerberg showed a variety of colored metallographic photo graphs of copper brass and steel a discussion was held after the talk the metallurgical faculty and senior metallurgists were among those present will hold into eight districts and four candidates will be selected from each district for the scholarship to oxford the financial value of the award is 2000 annually twelve men will be selected from the 600
