house g f marsh manager of the local f and w grand five and ten cent store spoke on chain store marketing marsh informed the 24 men pres ent that college students wishing to work up in the f and w grand organization must serve a three year apprenticeship at the end of which time they are promoted according to their abilit after their first promotion the men's futures de pend solely on their capabilities he then went on to explain why the majority of ten cent store mer chandise lies exposed on the count ers we have found that dime ar ticles which can be picked up and handled sell much faster than their sisters which are displayed from says business is better marsh stated that chain store business is on the upswing our sales records show that despite the new deal five and ten cent store sales have improved in the last two years according to the speaker chain stores like football teams have scouts we constantly have men going into other stores and check ing upon merchandise and sales prices all chain stores do this in fact i believe that some managers spend more of their time in my store than they do in their own places of business after marsh's speech the nine new men three accepted for publication by the journal of physical chemistry in vestigations for the paper were car ried on by h c martin ch e.'34 and l brewer ch e 35 under the direction of professor hazle hurst
