his pipe delib erately ... lit a match . . . paused . . . laid the pipe aside then hook ing a leg over the arm of his chair he began to speak in a slow drawl i've been at lehigh quite some time i've been a social member of three different classes and i'm not sure but what i like 37 even bet ter than the rest in all that time i can remember only twice that there wasn't some big howl about dance orchestras even when most of the boys were satisfied there was still some griping some of the boys thought ray noble had been terribly over rated and others didn't like ozzie and harriet but say listen to this the music wasn't loud but it seemed to fill the room i could close my eyes and imagine myself by judson l schaeffer it was in a bull session that i heard about him off and on he'd been at lehigh seven years he was on pro four times and had flunked most every subject he didn't like and yet he always kept within the regulations when he had to he could pass off any course some of the fellows called him the old man of the mountain and it wasn't long before i knew i'd have to see him — once any way the seven years gave me an idea . . . he lived near the top of the hill on the old philadelphia pike by the time i found the place i had made several mental notes to begin training on the next day hello he said without even asking who i was without listen ing to my explanation he afternoon in the faculty room alumni building approved and re corded a minute " on the death of natt m emery who until his death on wednesday evening was vice president and comptroller of the university after recording the life and ac complishments of dr emery the minute continues in part as follows a day catalog of a man's ca reer and accomplishments can but present a very inadequate picture of the man himself there is lacking the vital ele ment which distinguishes a real personality in dr emery's case the outstanding qualities were an engaging affability and a conscientious devotion to duty towards faculty and students he was always kindly fair courteous and sympathetic without in the least being gul lible he demanded a great deal of himself and expected much from others he was an able ad ministrator an excellent com mittee man and a capable pre siding officer his knowledge of business methods and parlia mentary procedure was supple mented by a generous fund of common sense and an almost uncanny faculty of getting at the crux of a situation to those who knew him well it was no surprise to hear that he had died in service and that his last effort was an endeavor to do something constructive for thpeßf(t)oße^lpy ( he sjo loved for lehigh univer sity was dr emery's life work fftßm : jj«l^r*itir he irew t - hiifc^feyl^toht mr i without stint all that was in
