the introduction of more efficient methods of distribution declared dr j f carroll president of general marketing counsellors inc in his talk tuesday evening in packard laboratory he spoke before a joint meeting of the engineers club of the le high valley and the lehigh valley sections of the american society of mechanical engineers and amer ican society for metals figures obtained from research costs wastes and losses in dis tribution was the title of dr car roll's talk and he based his asser tions on figures obtained through research he illustrated distribu tion's importance in the field of bus iness by stating that one out of every three and one-half persons gainfully occupied is in the field of distribution these wastes losses and costs in distribution apparently cause an ab normal rise in the price of goods between the time they leave the fac tory and the time they are purchas ed by the consumer it has been es timated that the american people pay on the average twice as much for the goods they purchase as the manufacturer receives for these same articles traces milk distribution lowering of distribution costs was visualized as an exceedingly diffi cult task because of the public's re quirements for many things that force distributors greatly to increase their costs in this connection dflt carroll cited the evolution of mil distribution from the five gallon can to the quart bottle and now to evem newer paper dispensers j do you realize how much a bil lion is dr carroll inquired as he began his explanation of the money used in distribution in 1929 he said that slightly more than a billion minutes have passed since the birth of christ in 1929 the total bill for distribution was 38,200,000,000 ex cluding the billion dollars used as the purchasing costs of manufac turers in the same year there were one and one-half million retail out lets in the u s about one store for every 20 families useless steps encountered the whole distribution system is so mixed up that manufacturers sell to manufacturers wholesalers to wholesalers and other agents to similar agents and many useless and costly steps are encountered elimination of these will bring about reductions one of the first steps must be the spending of more money for sales research and the second must be the application of engineering methods between the sales and the production departments a
