sophs score victory in exciting game two extra periods necessary to give decision to 24 quintet juniors expect to publish excel lent year book during junior week team expected to make strong bid for intercollegiate crown on march 11 new york college will send one of the strongest teams of the east the big red wrestling team will give brown and white men a good fight good battle expected white matmen keep them out of meet accidents to some of brown and injuries weaken lehigh lehigh line-up will probably be the same which faced swarthmore recently in a very spirited game of bas ketball last wednesday afternoon in taylor gym the sophomore team defeated the frosh quintet by the score of 24 to 20 the game was very close at all times and after finishing the last half the game was carried into two extra periods as the score was tied twice as the periods ended in these extra ten minutes the sophs caged three goals to the one shot by the freshmen the game was the scene of much class spirit which put the referee at a disadvantage and delayed the game a number of times titus groner and dubois of the fresh man team scored almost in turn buck and minster led the sopho mores in shooting and in their floor work the line-up : — freshman sophomore dubois f minster groner f humbaugh titus c buck gilmour g bortz verlenden g genshart a a tate lehigh 15 acted as referee phi delts five wins in basketball the students of lehigh are prom ised an exceptional treat next sun day evening at the regular weekly meeting of the y m c a which will be addressed by dr h n shenton ph d professor of so ciology at columbia university dr shenton is an associate of dr gedding one of the most promi nent sociologists in the country and is considered exceptionally good he has had a great amount of ex perience in his profession and is in great demand as a speaker at the present time just now he is mak ing a lecture tour which is includ ing many of the leading education al institutions of the east he is a graduate of dickinson college drew institute and columbia uni versity at which he earned his de gree of doctor of philosophy his topic for the evening will be a christian social engineer which seems to be an intensely interesting subject for the average college man mr j mark frey has taken special trouble to have a good mu sical program for the evening he has arranged with miss baughman of bethlehem to render some solos she will be accompanied on the piano by miss sara yocum oi the bethlehem conservatory of music in all it will be a meeting well worth attending every one should make it his duty to be there drown hall 6:15 o'clock sunday evening the brown and white wrestlers will meet one of the strongest teams in the east to-morrow night at tay lor gym when cornell comes down with its veteran squad in spite of the fact that cornell lost to perm state their team is one that will put in a strong bid for in tercollegiate honors at the end of this month since every man has had more or less experience in match wrestling however barring fur ther injuries which have already crippled lehigh's strength coach sheridan is optimistic regarding the possibilities of winning the meet captain ackerly cornell's 115 pound class man is the ace of the ithacans squad but will no doubt have to give a good account of him self when he meets schwartzbach ackerly is the brother the champion of a the light-weight division of a few years ago who upon going in to the 125-pound class was forced to train down in order to avoid meeting bevier of lehigh and so maintain a record unmarred by de feats continued on page four captain coxe and schwartzbach are the outstanding stars of the brown and white aggregation and frosh officers decide some class questions musical club concert to be given soon the game with the fordham uni versity five to be played in taylor gym at 3 o'clock to-morrow after noon promises to be one of the best of the season the lehigh team has been showing real form the last two games and the men are sure to give a good account of themselves in saturday's encounter i fordham comes with a string of . eleven victories to her credit out of sixteen games played this season lafayette yale and st joseph's college are among the teams which have felt the sting of defeat at their hands recently they defeat ed the crescent athletic club one of the strongest teams in new york and the only team which suc ceeded in overthrowing the strong rutgers quintet on ruigers's own floor lingle and harper will probably be in the forward positrons har per having fully recovered from the injury which has kept him out of the last two games the efficient work of henschen and hartung at guard in the last two games has been very encouraging to the coach and this same pair will probably fill those positions in this game of late the team has been play ing more as a unit than ever before passing has been accurate and the entire team has been playing very consistently all of which gives le high excellent chances for victory over fordham lingle and lees can be relied upon when it comes to caging baskets their steady vyork the 192 epitome board held an important meeting wednesday ev ening in drown hall the purpose of the meeting was to elect an as sistant art editor to fill the place of s a stafford 23 who recent ly left college h r talmadge 23 was elected to fill this position editor-in-chief j w gardy 23 explained the outlook for a very successful book and that the pros pects to have the epitome out by junior week look good over half of the copy is in the hands of the printer at the present time the book is being published by the read-taylor company of balti more md who are going ahead fast on the work the art work is being planned by art editor b a c johnston who has some new and clever drawings which he expects to use any art contributions on the part of the stu dent body will be appreciated as there are opportunities in which they can be used the athletic section will be much larger and special pains are being made to make it very accurate more space will be devoted to the major sports and the minor sports will be given more prominence than usual in former issues the senior section has been com pleted by c p gooding 22 who is chairman of the senior class book committee this section will be one of the best ones ever print ed in the epitome to top off the book the board plans to run a large and interesting feature section the contents of this section will be original articles in prose and poetry by the student body supplimented by a goodly number of campus views the stu dents are requested to hand to j w gardy 23 any original poems prose works or pictures which will aid in making the epitome suc cessful • the business end is also making good progress and candidates for the business manager position are now taking subscriptions sub scriptions should be given to them or to business manager e h sny der 23 as soon as possible as the number of copies which are to be printed will be determined by the number of subscriptions turned in cornell frosh next on frosh schedule four runners entered in georgetown meet ■with lehigh's big victory over swarthmore in the pool last satur day the season's meets are over with the exception of the intercol legiates which will take place here on march 11 although the first two meets were not as successful as might be de sired the last three have been vic tories worthy of recognition for all the men who have participated in them under coach p w lu kens's supervision the team has ac complished a great deal this season the brown and white natators sent their competitors from swarthmore to defeat last saturday with the largest margin of the year when they were able to pile up 40 points against the garnet's 13 of the six meets scheduled with eastern colleges five have been completed as the one for this sat urday with stevens had to be post poned lehigh has triumphed in three of these making a total of 149 points against 161 scored by her opponents for this reason the outlook for the brown and white svvimmers in the championship neet is very bright the intercol legiates will take place in taylor pool on march 11 and the colleges which will be certain entries are johns hopkins swarthmore rut gers lehigh and then there are some other probable entries as the brown and white team has already defeated all the above-named 1 col leges in the season's meets the men will undoubtedly carry off the hon ors in the championship meet this season has brought quite a few stars of the tank into the lime light most of whom are freshmen harmon the freshman sensation has broken several lehigh records in the 100-yard and 220-yard swims other freshmen who have done re markable work are childs and as tarita in diving feats the upper classes also have their stars who have gotten recognition captain vannort jacobs gang were and underwood have been the mainstays in all of the meets ' be sides these many others have done notable work for the team with such an outlay of good swimmers in the lower classes le high should have a good team for several years continued on page four manager jagels has made ar rangements for a post-season meet with blair academy on march 18 for the scrubs and he hopes to a meeting of the officers of the freshman class took place in drown hall last wednesday even ing this meeting was for the pur pose of planning a method of pro ceedure in the collection of dues which had been assessed earlier in the year a committee was chosen and a group of men assigned to each to be canvassed for the dues the work of this committee has pro ceeded with a large degree of suc cess and the men have in most cases seen their obligation to the class and have paid immediately as yet the committee has not been able to cover the entire class and the members are requested to be ready to pay at the earliest time possible with spring fast approaching and the banquet not far off the class cannot function without the financial backing as well as person al support of each individual mem ber with this comes success and the carrying on of lehigh tradition naval society to hear mr nelis on boilers freshman dribblers to meet wilson h s the naval engineering society will hold an important meeting this evening at 8 o'clock in the physics lecture room mr nelis the principal speaker of the evening will talk on marine boilers and superheaters mr nelis at the present time with the foster ma rine boilers co was chief boiler engineer for the emergency fleet corporation during the war he has a great deal of experience along scientific lines and is sure to give a talk that no one can afford to miss the naval engineering society ex tends every one a cordial invitation to be with them this evening the next meet for the freshman wrestling team will be against the strong cornell frosh grapplers this meet is going to be held at cornell on march 11 and from all indications this meet will by no means be a slow one as the cornell frosh have a decidedly strong team the lehigh freshmen due to the experience received in the two pre vious meets against blair academy and the allentown y m c a feel quite confident that they will be able to down the cornell representatives there are only two remaining meets on the frosh schedule and these meets are considered the two hardest of the year the teams who are yet to be met are the cor nell and perm frosh teams the meet with perm is to be held on saturday march 18 at the taylor gymnasium and coach bertolet wants all candidates for the team to report more regularly for prac tice in order to get the team in as good shape as possible for the re maining two meets at a meeting on wednesday ev ening in drown hall the musical clubs drew up plans for future concerts as a result of the dis cussion it was thought probable that the next concert will be held at home during the latter part of march this will be followed if present plans materialize by a week-end trip to wilkes-barre probably the first week in april a new manager and assistant manager were elected h t lit ke 24 was chosen manager while his assistant will be f w lewis 23 a committee appointed to take charge of the home concert consists of w f burdick 24 chairman a r little opportunity for those men who have not already availed themselves of the privileges of membership in either club to make one of the clubs and help maintain one of lehigh's best institutions the clubs are now beginning the most intensive part of their season and programs will now be arranged for the big concert at home the club members are all enthusiastic and determined to show the public that monday night march 6 all new men should report at the time stated and are assured of a fair trial . phi delta theta easily defeated 1 kappa sigma in the second round * of the inter-fraternity basketball tournament in a rough but fast game by the score of 23 to 9 from the first minute of play the game proved to be an exciting one 4 with newlin who was the star of the afternoon caging five field goals - from all parts of the court hardie 1 and adams kept their team in the e running by some well-placed shots - however they could not overtake t their opponents who just kept in t the lead and the half ended 11 to i 7 in favor of the phi delts the second half started with a l bang and the fast pace was con ! tinued throughout the game the close guarding of vail and peter t sen held the preparatory game for their game with their rivals phillipsburg high school the frosh have been playing a good game and should have no difficulty in coming out on the long end of the score following the game will be an entertainment and dance the line-up of the lehigh year lings will be titus center nor man and roberts forwards and verlenden and groner guards the lehigh track team will run on an indoor track this friday ev ening for the last time this season in the meet at georgetown univer sity four men and coach kanaly will make the trip lehigh will compete in the mile relay against washington and lee university it is also hoped that lafayette will be entered in this event but it is doubt ful whether any maroon runners will be there try-outs were held on wednes day afternoon in
