vol xxvil no 15 soccer team to meet swarthmore soon varsity to play muhlenberg price five cents saturday team plays game in blue mountain league second team defeats bethlehem prep in one-sided race equipment to be here for the lafayette game lehigh to send men to inter national convention lecture delivered to all men in the unit should not be hard contest with allentown collegians demerit system squad in good shape christmas hall col lang to have his office in be in line=up , capt mcdonald will probably following the hard meet with perm state the cross country team has been taking it rather easy so far this week but will soon begin hard practice for the next meet this will be the intercollegiates at easton over the lafayette course the injured members of the squad are rounding into shape and it is expected that by next week the team will again be able to show its full strength laughton and brug man the men whose injuries pre vented them from making the state trip are expected to be out again this week last week the second team journed over to bethlehem prep where they defeated the bethlehem boys in a rather one-sided race seven men started for lehigh and seventeen for prep a prep man finished first followed by all seven of the lehigh men before another prep runner arrived home call for swimmers despite the rain which has caused the field to be rather muddy the soccer team has been practicing steadily this week an effort is being made to correct the faults in the team which appeared during the game with state last saturday under the direction of coach murphy a squad of 25 men has been reporting regularly for prac tice murphy who is a member of the champion bethlehem steel team is showing a great deal of in terest in the team and under his direction the playing is expected to show a decided improvement the next game which the team plays will be in the blue mountain league this contest being schedul ed saturday on the home grounds following this comes the second intercollegiate contest of the season which will be with swarthmore on the latter s grounds reports from swarthmore indicate a strong team there this year so an interesting game should result tau beta pi pledges with the playing field practical ly a sea of mud during the greater part of the past week coach keady has had to hold his prac tices on the baseball diamond in the outfield and inside the gym nasium several light scrimmages have been indulged in during the week and the team on tuesday night was given a blackboard talk and several new plays both offen sive and defensive were explained by diagram which are to be per fected for use in the lafayette game the game tomorrow with muh lenberg is not looked upon as a very hard contest but no chances will be taken and it is probable that the first team will be sent in against the allentown collegians to start the game considerable time has been spent in perfecting the forward pass which has proved to be a good the low pitch slides for the band instruments have arrived and the band used them for the first time monday this will enable several men who own low pitched instru ments who heretofore have been unable to play with the band to do so in addition to the five instru ments ordered about two weeks ago two clarinets were ordered from a new york concern all these in struments are expected to be here for the lafayette game the men who were appointed to canvass their respective living groups are slow in collecting and handing in their funds to the treasurer on acount of this the acquisition of additional instru ments and the promotion of work in general is very much hampered those groups who have turned in their funds have in most cases met all expectations the campaign for funds will be continued and all those who have not made a contribution may do so at any time to the group repre sentative the total amount of funds collected ii'oin each group as well as a statement of disburse ments will probably appear in the next issue of the brown and white it is desired to place the band on a permanent basis this must be done in such a way that it measures up to the standards of the institution it represents the in pledged to the tau beta pi society at the chapel exercises wednesday morning the tau beta pi is an honorary engineering society and corresponds to the phi beta kappa of the arts and science courses it was founded here at lehigh by professor w e williams in 1885 and at the pres ent time there are thirty-two chapters those pledged were r s bell man m j brooks r b honey man j j mieldazis j a rein hardt and g s scott once during every student gen eration an international conven tion of the student volunteer movement is held at which there are representatives from almost every institution of learning in the united states and canada the eighth convention will be held this year at dcs moines lowa be ginning december 31 1919 and closing january 4 1920 the most prominent speakers of the country come to address these gatherings and the social moral and religious problems of the world today are discussed it is hence very fitting that lehigh be well represented to show that she is alive to these questions this week the campaign for funds for sending seven delegates from lehigh to the convention is in progress bulletins have been posted around the campus and among the living groups giving full particulars the arcadia has gone on record as approving le high's participation in the conven tion there is a strong element among the faculty and friends of the university who will help put this across however this 1 is a student movement and it is up to the student body to put it across without aid from these peopled from the groups thus far re ported substantial contributions have been obtained the date for final reports is saturday novem ber 15 and it is desirable that every living group in college come to the fore by that time reports are to be handed to r d billinger chairman of the committee at sec tion e taylor hall reports from neighboring col leges show that their alumni and student bodies have financed the varsity wrestlers practicing for season last wednesday afternoon colonel thayer the district in spector of the states of pennsyl vania maryland and delaware ad dressed the men enlisted in the le high r 0 t c unit compliment ing them on their size and on the fine showing already made doctor drinker also spoke saying that he was very proud of the fact that le high university could boast of one of the most efficient r 0 t c units in the country and he con gratulated colonel lang on the ex cellent progress made after the addresses methods for maintaining discipline in the unit were discussed it was unanimous ly voted to accept the demerit sys tem this system was worked out and presented for the approval of the unit by a committee familiar with the disciplinary systems en forced at different cantonments and schools it was first used at ejoim ilopkins university wnere it proved to be successful demerits are given for various offences and all men receiving more than the maximum number allowed are re quired to walk punishment tours for each excess demerit in the near future colonel lang expects to move his headquarters to christmas hall hereafter all classes and lectures pertaining to the r 0 t c course will be held there the requistion for uniforms was sent into headquarters last week so that within a few weeks the unit will probably be fully uniformed and equipped y m c a fencing class the first swimming meet of the willingness to assist mr bartlett in teaching the classes at present the most suit able hour f oj a fencing class is four o'clock on wednesdays but this hour may be changed if not satis factory to the majority of the men new books winter tennis practice the music for the evening will be furnished by miss ardis green leaf soprano and miss muriel danner pianist students at the moravian college dr john h clewell president of the moravian seminary will de liver an address entitled check ing up the account at the next sunday evening y m c a meet ing dr clewell is well known to lehigh men having spoken at these meetings several times in the past his talk will undoubtedly be of interest to all college men and every one who can do so should attend project readily and will be well represented more applicants are encouraged to send in their names as candidates as the delegates will be selected very soon in order to be considered as a delegate a man must fulfill the following condi tions : first he must be well up in his scholastic work so that the faculty will excuse him from his studies for the period of the con vention second he must be a rep resentative man as members of each class will be sent so as to make the delegation representative of le higb third the applicant must be a serious minded student who will go to dcs moines and be able to bring back to his college the fund of the team is far from being discouraged over the results of the perm state contest of last saturday and there isn't a man on the team or the squad who can not be counted upon to give the best he has to down the easton rivals the team will be able to enter the muhlenberg game in fine physical condition as one by one the cripples are rounding into shape captain mac donald who has been out of the past two con tests will be able to get into the line-up but may be only used for a short time as keady wishes to take no chances on his cripples as all will be needed in the lafayette game henzelman the speedy halfback will get in for the first time in over a month and will probably start at halfback " butch v return is a welcome sign as he is a valuable man both on the offensive and de fensive pons and wilson both of whom received slight injuries at perm state have both recovered and will be able to play muhlenberg's team this year while lighter than lehigh s is ex ceptionally fast and can be counted on to put up a stiff fight to the end their record this year is a fairly good one and although they were a little slow in rounding into form they are now traveling at top speed and are anxious to give the brown and white a hard tussle for the game the probable line-up for lehigh will be larkin l.e spagna l.t ; mccarthy l.g ; goldman c ; mac donald r.g ; booth r.t ; wilson r.e herrington q 8 .; henzelman l.h.8 ; rote r.h.8 ; wysocki f.b notice within the past two weeks the lehigh university library has re ceived an addition of more ' than sixty books the university is building up a dramatic library some of the most recently procured dramas be ing french spanish belgian and irish masterpieces perhaps the two most popular additions to the library are impressions of theo dore roosevelt by l f abbott and theodore roosevelt by w r thayer there will be a regular meeting of the lehigh maryland club friday evening november 14 at eight o'clock in drown hall all members and men who live in maryland are urged to be present there are gtill some maryland men in college who are eligible to the club and who have not yet attend ed any meetings these men in particular are invited regular practice will be held daily at 5 p.m beginning monday november 24 f c bartlett assisted by g c thomas will coach the squad manager buller of the freshman basketball team is working up a schedule whereby the frosh will meet a number of teams of nearby institutions some of the tentative games are : blair academy wyom ing seminary hazleton high pal merton boys club mauch chunk high bethlehem prep and lafa yette freshmen on and after monday november 17th the chapel doors will be closed at 7 45 a.m when the open ing hymn begins students attend ing chapel must be in their seats in time for the beginning of the service signed henry s drinker president rehearsals of the combined musical clubs will probably begin within the next few weeks most of the glee club music has been ordered and should arrive very shortly upon which the club will start practice the majority of the music is popular rather than the more classical and should ap peal to everyone when presented music for the mandolin club is still being selected and will be ordered in the next few days there is still an opportunity for first tenors to join the glee club an appeal is made to all men who have tenor voices to see mr shields any morning immediately after chapel men who did not try out for the mandolin club and who wish to do so may arrange a try out by seeing r a wilbur at the kappa alpha house at the pres ent time there are about fifty men in the combined clubs on trips the clubs will be cut down to about thirty men these men will be chosen according to their ability interest shown at rehearsals and attendance at meetings lehigh men may hold bright prospects as to next year's tennis team for the first time in the history of the university winter tennis practices will be held the
