matthews bus parker berg in addition to his superior scholastic standing played soccer during his four years here and captained the squad as a senior in his last two years he was ad vertising and business manager re spectively of the epitome president of cyanide vice president of omi cron delta kappa and a member of mustard and cheese interfrater nity council robert w blake so ciety and international relations club he also gained sophomore honors sophomore honors also went to samuel graw as did the wilbur english prize graw was a member of the debating and pre-legal so cieties john matthews was a member of alpha kappa psi a group of 16 seniors was intiated earlier in the spring 3 new companies formed at drill increased enrollment forces change nine companies were formed at yesterday afternoon's drill instead of six as in former years major j o green commanding officer of the r o t c explained that the new companies were necessitated by the increased enrollment in the freshman and sophomore classes and the doubling of the enrollment of the advanced courses in the past two years this year companies a b c e f and g will drill on the upper field as usual while the three newly formed companies will drill on the west end of the lower field com panies will be composed of three platoons as before but the size of platoons will be cut to three squads instead of four williams will be inaugurated on foun der's day oct 2 comes here from lowa clement c williams the new president of lehigh will arrive in bethlehem oct 1 to assume duties of the office left vacant aug 31 by the resignation because of illness of charles russ richards now pres ident emeritus he will be inaug urated on founder's day oct 2 dr williams who for the past nine years has been dean of the college of engineering at the uni versity of lowa was elected pres ident at a meeting of the board of trustees on sept 5 at that time the board by a unanimous vote accept ed the recommendation of its com mittee which had been appointed three months ago to find a succes sor to dr richards dr williams is coming to beth lehem at the request of the board committee and was presented the following day to the board of trus tees and the department heads at a luncheon given in his honor at the hotel bethlehem he was formally presented by eugene g grace president of the board of trustees and later personally by walter r okeson secretary and treasurer of the board after the luncheon is illinois graduate dr williams has been connected with university life ever since his graduation from the university of illinois in 1907 with the degree of b s in c e following his un dergraduate years he worked as a highway bridge municipal and railroad engineer at the same time he held the post of instructor and later assistant professor of civil en gineering at the university of col orado until 1914 in the capacity of railroad engineer he worked for a time with the delaware lacka wanna and western railroad at scranton where he made his first contacts with lehigh engineers prior to his being called to the university of lowa as dean of the college of engineering he was head of the department of civil engineer ing at the university of illinois from 1922 to 1926 his appointment came from president-emeritus richards who was at that time dean of the college of engineering was on kansas faculty in 1914 he was made professor of railroad engineering at the uni versity of kansas and in 1918 be came the head of the civil engineer ing department dr williams married ora luel la webb his second wife in 1921 they have three children ora louise webb 12 ellen webb 10 and clement webb 6 politically he is a republican he is a member of the methodist church dr williams is the author of richards in addition a testimonial book let containing an expression of ap preciation was presented to dr richards the volume is bound in hand-tooled french leather with il luminated parchment pages the volume was personally signed by each of the members of the board of trustees warned of strains dr richards was advised by his physician to avoid the emotional or deal of personally accepting the tes timonial and left for his new home in minneapolis the day before the honors had been conferred upon him lehigh is now in the unique po sition of having two living pres idents-emeritus in 1921 the same honor was conferred on dr henry s drinker following his retirement from the presidency of the univer sity on june 19 dr richards was given an honorary doctorate of laws at the 179 th commencement used on the campus strict enforcement of all rules be gan sunday according to a further decision of arcadia a suggestion requesting future freshman classes to wear identification name badges was dropped a faculty group that will assist the arcadia committee members will be announced in the future dr schober dies former chemistry head succumbs in florida dr william b schober 70 for mer head of the chemistry depart ment died at his home at cocoanut grove fla on aug 19 dr schober first came to lehigh as an instructor in 1892 in 1907 he became head of the department 11l health forced him to take a three years leave of absence during which time dr h m ullmann was act ing head of the department when dr schober was unable to return at the end of this time he was suc ceeded by dr ullmann who still heads the department lambda chi alpha and theta xi head list with 14 men each total largest in years delta tau delta sigma nu and phi gamma delta tap 13 each lehigh's 29 fraternities pledged 241 of the incoming freshman class last saturday night to climax one of the most successful rushing sea sons in years lambda chi alpha and theta xi two delaware avenue houses split the honors as far as laboratory and to engineers of the mcclintic-mar shall company on his first year's work on battledeck flooring following the lecture he tested his second model to destruction un der a load of 29,000 pounds at this load the model was carrying 12 times the load for which it was de signed and the only noticeable ef fects were a slight deformation of stringers madsen will make and test two more succumbs in florida dr william b schober 70 for mer head of the chemistry depart ment died at his home at cocoanut grove fla on aug 19 dr schober first came to lehigh as an instructor in 1892 in 1907 he became head of the department 11l health forced him to take a three years leave of absence during which time dr h m ullmann was act ing head of the department when dr schober was unable to return at the end of this time he was suc ceeded by dr ullmann who still heads the department lambda chi alpha and theta xi head list with 14 men each total largest in years delta tau delta sigma nu and phi
